when my aunt donated a kidney to my mom (she lives alone) her neighbors pitched in a paid a lawn service to help her for a month. I have no idea how much that costs, but I was trying to think of something man friendly! Good luck!
Hello mamas! My brother (37 in August) just had surgery yesterday. Basically, he went in for a laproscopic surgery to try to determine the cause of an infection and found that his appendix had burst sometime...a while back!!! I know right! I've NEVER heard of such a thing--thought a ruptured appendix that went untreated was fatal? Anyway, he's doing well right now and will probably go home in a few days. I live out-of-town (Omaha) and he lives in St. Louis so I'd like to send him something. It seems silly to send flowers that he would NOT appreciate or balloons that are way over-priced, so I thought about doing something that he could actually USE--either for recovery or after, but I'm at a loss. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

First thing that came to my mind was a nice get well card with a gift card in it. Tell him you wanted to send him flowers or balloons, but thought he might enjoy going to ("bla-blah) instead.
PS
What a nice sister you are!!
Is he married? Would he be able to use a gift of a housekeeper? Or what a meal delivery service like Schwans? Do you know anyone in the area that could pick up a gift card to a local grocery store and do some grocery shopping for him?
You could also check to see if his area has a grocery delivery service and have some groceries delivered to his house (like Peapod, or something like it).
How bout a giftr card to a take out restraunt in his area??
Hmmm... not much to go on here but just trying to think of things my husband (same age) would like:
- Prepaid housekeeping services
- Gift certificates to local restaurants so they don't have to cook
- Books/magazines to read while he's recovering
- If he likes videogames, a new game
- New comfy pajama pants, socks, tshirts to lounge around in
- Super soft pillowcase
- Crossword puzzles/Sudoku (my mom bought my DH these for the hospital while I was in labor- loved them!)
**Phone calls
**Daily cards (with notes or pictures from your kids)
There are all kinds of baskets you could send that you could pick with something he would enjoy. Coffee, Chocolate, Fruit, specialties from Maine, etc... whatever he would like. Amazon has a huge selection. Also there is a company called something like incredible edibles. A friend sent my family one of those and it was wonderful. I think they are all over priced but that is me and they do get something really nice and thoughtful.
Glad he's doing better :)
Best 'get well soon' gift I ever got was food in my freezer (so I didn't have to cook) and HUGE basket of old magazines... there were all sorts of mags in there... Maxim, Southern Cooking, those celeb gossip mags I'm addicted to... it was the best ;)

When I got home from the hospital after my baby, a couple people got me those pre-made dinners that have all the fixings and instructions inside. All we had to do was pre-heat the oven and we had amazing meals for a couple weeks. It was SOOOO appreciated.
Movie theater gift card, Gift card to his favorite restaurant, or box of his favorite chocolate ( Godiva) and home made get well card made by the kiddos.
Those fruit bouquets are good...edible arrangements is what they are called. He may have a restricted diet for a few days.
