I am at my whits end! I have 3 year old twin boys (will be 3 1/2 soon) who still do not poo on the potty! After 3 years of changing 2 babies diapers, I've had enough! I've tried bribing, rewarding, peer pressure, new underpants, small potty ring, foot stool, etc.... nothing is working! They are even in preschool / camp now and must be potty trained. One holds it in and the other is on the verge of being booted. Please help this insanely exhausted mommy of twin boys... sigh...

PS They pee in the potty perfectly!

I feel your pain. It seems like at this age they understand more, but they are also so stubborn and willful. You may need to figure out a bribe that works. M&M's worked for getting my son to pee, but they weren't enough to get him to sit long enough to poop. I then grudgingly offered a lollipop - still not enough. When he asked for a new truck, I said we would go to the store and get one immediately after he pooped on the potty. He sat on the potty until he pooped a half an hour later. He picked out a $1 truck at the store and was very proud. I also picked up a 10-pack of cars and told him he would get one every time he pooped in the potty. I also found that the first few times they really need something to keep them on the potty long enough to poop. Watching some short videos on a portable media player helped immensely when he got bored with books and toys after just a few minutes. I hope some of this helps you with your twins!

UGH! I hear your frustration! My son is now 4 1/2 and still won't go #2 in the potty. He has been half potty trained since he was 3.
I have tried everything you have.
He now gets constipation.
So I took him to his Dr. to have a talk, hoping that it would scare him into doing it. He has no fear, he is just stubborn.
The Dr. took a x.ray and he is backed up.

So, he is now so constipated that we are going to a specialist tomorrow, I was told it could take 6 months to have him back to "normal"

I don't have any answers, but I have been going through the same thing for 1.5 years, only with one child, but I feel for you.

Good Luck!

Going number two can be extremely tough for some kids and can cause an extreme amount of stress, seeing a large part of them leaving and then being flushed down the potty is very disturbing. Hang in there! Know that when it is time they will get it, remember that your stress can transfer to them.
Are they holding it until they get home, or are they preferring to do so in the comfort of their diaper?

This exact same thing happened when my son turned 3. Went pee perfectly but wouldnt poop for anything. I consulted with Wendy Sweeney, the Potty Whisperer out of Chicago. She can do phone consultations and she was a HUGE help to me. Within 10 days I had him going poopy in the potty perfectly. The biggest things for us was ending the constipation, pain, holding it cycle. We started giving one full cap of Miralax every day to get him regular. His poop went to a 'soft serve' consistancy and we got to practice the pooping several times a day vs. holding it for several and only getting the chance to practice once every 2-3 days. Wendy told me to always make him clean up his own accidents using the hand over hand method. Hes is doing the work but your hand is guiding. Add a few minutes on to clean up for each new accident. This can make clean up a 20 minute process but they start to figure out quickly that they dont want to do it again. Its been about 2 months now and we havent had a single accident! Hang in there, it will get better. ;-)

Do they sit when they pee? If they stand, you need have them sit instead. When boys stand to pee it makes them tighten their butt muscles which only makes it more difficult to get the poop to want to come out. Having them sit, relaxes those muscles which eventually will open up and the poop will come out whether they want it to or not. If he is really backed up now (constipated), you may need a stool softener for a little while to help things along. But again, do not let him stand to be as it only works against the whole poop process. He can stand when he gets older. But when potty training, little boys need to sit to help the anal muscles stay open and encourage that poop come out naturally. Even if they have gotten really good at withholding, having them sit will help things along soon enough. We had this same trouble with my son when he was younger and when my ped explained the whole sitting thing, it made so much sense... and it worked. Also, remember that they often say boys are not fully ready to be potty trained until closer to 4 years old. So, they are already ahead of the game as far as the stats go! Good luck.
