Our two oldest boys were invited to a birthday party for his coworker's son (turning 5). This kid has every toy known to man (but is not spoiled, which I LOVE, he's the sweetest kid ever!), so I wanted to do a 'movie' themed gift: a blue ray DVD with digital copy so that it can be downloaded to this kid's ipod, some popcorn, boxed candy, and a couple of sodas in a basket. Now, blue ray disks (especially with a digital copy) tend to be fairly expensive so my question is:
Is it better to do a more expensive gift from the two of them or seperate, less expensive gifts?
Btw, my husband wanted to do an Itunes gift card (because the kid has an ipod), but he's five and I think he would appreciate a more visual gift to open.
Thoughts or ideas?
Do the gift from both boys. Since the birthday boy has so many toys, perhaps a book or two would be better. I'd say even some books along with the main character. HTH.

THEY can download anything anytime on their own.
Just get the blue ray DVD if anything.
They don't need a copy to download.
I would not put 'sodas' in the basket. The kid is 5.
Most parents do not want, 'soda' for their kids.
My son will be 5 soon. I would not want sodas or candy for him, even if in a gift.
Other ideas are:
Hot Wheel cars
Puzzles
Bakugan
Pokemon
Lego game or Legos
Dinosaurs
Remote controlled car
These are what my son likes. And again, he is the same age and will be 5 soon, too.
I would spend $20 on a toy and call it a day. I can't tell you how many gifts we have gotten over the years that we have not used. The kids is 5 - I think that's too young for gift cards, and a DVD? Do you really know what they like to watch and is that something that you want to encourage - watching TV? Any child's gift should be considered a token gift - unless you are trying to impress or are related. Another fun gift might be a hula hoop or a ball.
I agree that the soda might not be quite right. I like your little basket idea though. Maybe a popcorn, a candy, and a juice box? I'd make sure the basket can be re-used as a toy or book holder, not some wicker basket that everyone has 100 of.
But yes, if I were you, I'd just do one big 'family' gift.
I'd do one larger gift from both of your kids, but like everyone else, I wouldn't include soda or candy - unless you know the parents allow it.
I really like the movie idea! I think that is a great gift for any age! & I think that if you give the gift from both of the boys then that should work out fine. How about "consumables" that aren't junk food? Like Play-Doh, or better yet, Sculpey & paints. Washable markers, sidewalk chalk.... something crafty that provides fun while getting used up but not rotting teeth or inducing a sugar high.
I agree that it should be one gift from the Family.
Lately, I have been giving PJs as a gift for kids bday parties. Maybe you can find a pair with the character that matches the DVD. Target has been a good place for finding this type of gift, but I am sure Wal-Mart has them too, I just don't shop there much. The celebrant's parents seem to be very happy about getting the PJs, and the kids like the characters on them.
I think it's a cute idea.
