Girls and Thier Periods (Need a Book)

I am hoping someone can give me the name of a good period book. I have a half sister (we share the same dad), she is about to turn 13, lost her mom 2 years ago, long story, but we have been out of touch for a long time, I just saw her for the first time this weekend, she hasn't started yet, but it is coming, she has to shave and is wearing a bra already, so I am sure it will be anytime. It is just her and my dad, she took to me like there was no time or miles ever between us, so I know she feels OK turning to me, however they live almost 4 hours away. I want her to have the knowledge she needs under her belt, she loves to read and I think a book would be perfect prep for her. It will help my dad too, he is a little goofy when it comes to girl stuff (like when I started developing, he told me "it looks like some pretty big mosqitos bit you" ... :| Who says that... ) Any books I can send her way would be a huge help. Thanks

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I got the American Girl one, it was the most popular among the mama's! I am just going to mail it to her with a little note that says something like, I know Dad can be hard to talk to and I am far away so I wanted to give you a good book full of information about your body and what maybe be happening or about to happen. I looked through it and there are somethings in there that she is probably a little old for, but over all it is good, and when all you have is your dad, it is going to be a great reference for her. I just don't want her to not ask questions out of imbarrasment or get mis informed by 1 of her girl friends. So it is perfect. Thank you all who took the time to advise me on this whole period thing, I have a 1 year old little girl so all this is good prep for me too!

There is a book by American Girl that is perfect-not too young but not too grown up too. I got it for my girls age 12+1/2 and 11. They weren't grossed out by it either. There are quite a few if you go to the book store. Good Luck! You're a great sister.

The book I gave my daughter was "The Care And Keeping of You - The Body Book for Girls" from American Girl. I don't know if it would be to basic for your half sister, but my 9-year-old really liked it. I thought it was a good book because it not only covered the basics of development, it talked about how to handle getting your period, as well as keeping your body healthy through exercise and personal hygiene.

You can order the book from americangirl.com, or I bought my daughter's copy at Bath & Body Works (in case you want to look at the book before giving it to your half sister).

Hope this helps.

I hear your concern. I have a 10 year old daughter...very mature for her age, been wearing a bra since last summer, probably wouldn't hurt to shave her legs and has hair growing "other places". I've talked to the school nurse at her school about the changes and if there were many girls her age who have started and such. She told me of a book, I cannot remember the exact title. Either The American Girl, or An American Girl. But something with American Girl in the title. The school nurse told me it has great wording and gives a good understanding to what has been happening to their bodies, and what will be happening. You should be able to find it in the young adult section at Borders. I started to look for it one day when I was there and then had to leave before I could find that particular title. There were some others there, but I'm dealing with a 10 year old...not a 13 year old...some were a little more mature, even for her. But I would start there. Good Luck!

I myself was just doing some research for this topic. I have a daughter that is about to go through the same thing. Here is what I found:

Period by JoAnn Gardner-Loulan
It's Perfectly Normal by Robie Haris

Good Luck to both of you!

Ask at Borders they are wonderful help. I was just there last night asking about these types of books for my 11 year old. The lady gave me about 5 different books that they have that people purchase and let me sit and look through them before I made my decision. The one they mainly suggested and most people on here is the American Girl book.

I am not sure what book to tell you about however, I have had good luck with the American Girls books. There is a book on the body, a book and journal on feelings, and other books. Check Barnes and Noble. My daughter is ten and we read the book on the changes her body with go through. She loves it and will reread it from time to time.

Hope it works out for you. It is great that you are taking care of your sister. Keep up the good work.

Hi R.!

There is a wonderful book out there. It is called The Period Book! I used it with my oldest daughter Amanda and kept it for my little one. It is wonderful. It talks about the changes that come to your body and what happens when you get your period and about different body sizes and shapes and how there is no "normal" body. You can get it at any book store and online. I'm sorry that I don't remember who the author is and we just recently moved and I'm not quite sure where it is at at the moment. But it is a great book!
