Great Midwife for VBAC (Newton-Wellesley Hospital)

I recently found out that I am expecting my second child. I had a c-section with my first and am hopeful for a VBAC this time around. I felt that my OB was quick to jump on a c-section, so I would like to change providers this time. I think that the experience might be better overall and my chances for a successful VBAC greater with a midwife. The two practices I am considering right now are Women's Health Associates in Wellesley and Harvard Vanguard in Wellesley. I've heard good things about both - does anyone have any good or bad feedback on either? Or another amazing midwife that delivers at Newton-Wellesley? Many thanks in advance!

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for the great recommendations. What a great and supportive board! I met with Mary Baker at Harvard Vanguard and am going to a meet the midwives at Women's Health Associates next week. I loved Mary and will likely end up sticking with them (great to know that Michelle and Suzanne are fabulous as well). Although I completely applaud home birth and think it could be an amazing experience, I don't think I'm quite up to that this time around!

I am pregnant with my second child and am seeing Suzanne Wright at Harvard Vanguard and like her very much. I actually have seen almost all of the midwives at that practice and they are all very nice and personable. Michelle (can't remember her last name) from the same clinic delivered my daughter three years ago and it was wonderful. I can't say enough nice things about a midwife delivery. They love what they do and it shows. When my daughter was born it was just my husband and I and two midwives (one was a student). It was so beautiful. And...your at a hospital so if there are any complications... Good luck!

I used Women's Health Asso. for all my ob/gyn needs and they are great. I used a mid-wife on my first delivery after my doctor suggested it, given that I had a by-the-book pregnancy. They were wonderful, warm and supportive all the way through the pregnancy and birth. I used the doctors on my 2nd delivery (decided I would like an epidural) and again, great experience with Drs. Richer and Gaither. I believe Dr. Richer has retired from OB but don't know about Dr. Gaither. Good luck with your choice.

I had a VBAC at NWH and it was a WONDERFUL experience. I use Harvard Vanguard at the Kenmore office and the only midwife there who delivers at NWH is Biddy Fein, who is fantastic! She may work from the wellesley office as well-I'm not sure. I went to a "harvard vanguard Meet the Midwives" at NWH which was great to see and hear from all of them since you don't know which one will actually deliver you. HV has some of the best VBAC statistics. Everyone I came across was so supportive of my decisions and I was able to have my medication free, all natural birth that I dreamed of having. I even had some abnormally heavy bleeding but they just monitored my very closely. In fact one of the nurses literally followed me abound the room the whole time holding the fetal monitor on me since it hurt way too much to have the belt on.

Congrats on your pregnancy and good luck with your VBAC! If you have any other questions please feel free to send me a message. :)

I can't tell you much about VBACs, but the midwives at Harvard Vanguard in Wellesley are ALL amazing. They delivered both of my children at Newton Wellesley. (And, in both cases, had to change shifts, so I had the pleasure--truly--of working with several of them during delivery!)

Good luck!

Have you looked at all at homebirth? Pregnancy/birth is not an illness! Your chances for a vaginal delivery is highest if you can stay out of the hospital. Even if your hospital-based provider is excellent, he/she is still subject to hospital policy and it can be a fight to avoid the standard interventions that can lead to the operating room.

Just found this: http://ican-online.org/none/ican-birth-class-cesarean-pre... If you're not able/intested in the webinar, check out the white pages.

I found the ICAN (International Cesarian Awareness Network) community amazingly helpful when planning my VBAC. There's a local chapter that meets end of the month. email ____@____.com for info and local connections

I started out working with Women's Health Associates for my VBAC then decided to go the homebirth route (which at least one of the nurse midwives gave me a thumbs up on). Up until 36 weeks they provided shadow care. We hired a qualified direct-entry midwife (I can give her name and others I was referred to, if you're interested) and I'm still riding the high of my home water birth 2 years ago!

For my delivery I had Micheele Helgeson. I go to DMA but I know she practices else where too. She's great! She takes a person interest in her clients as well, which made me feel better. If you want more info the only way I know to contact her is through Dedham Medical in Dedham. If you have any more questions feel free to email me at ____@____.com

I don't have a midwife, but my doctor is not insisting on another c-section for my second delivery. I go to About Women By Women in Wellesley (they also have an office in Waltham). My doctor is Vasilakas. And all the docs deliver at NWH. Good luck!
