Hair-care Product Question for Son with Curly Hair

Moms,

Compared to some of the challenges other Moms post on the site, I realize this one is pretty insignificant! :) However, my two-year-old son's hair has recently turned super curly/wavy (he always had my stick-straight hair.) We've kept it a little longer now, which is perfect for all these new curls.

Needless to say, as soon as sleeps on it or it goes into day-two of being washed, it tends to fall flat and stick up all over, and then it just looks messy and sloppy! Have any of you had any success using kids' hair products (specifically something to keep curly hair "curly"?) for your child, like mousse or spray? My husband's not sure we should put anything in my son's hair, but I wanted to put the question out there.

Thanks in advance for whatever info you can send my way!
:)

You might try a little hair gel. I had to use products in mya daughter's hair from the time she was about 1 year old. She is 10 now and she is still healthy. Hope this helps.

I just spray a kids detangler on my son and it brings the curl back ---use a comb not a brush.

I have naturally curly hair. I have to wash my hair every day to avoid the frizz. (But that's for me).

I use TresSemme Moouse for curly hair - it's alcohol free. ($3 at Wal-mart for a huge bottle)

Only comb it while it wet, period. With a wide tooth comb.

Loreal makes really good hair products for kids. Both my daughter and myself have curly hair and that is what we use. The shampoo+conditioner works great on the tangles and keeps their hair really soft.

My daughter's hair is extremely curly and very long. I use this stuff called Catwalk. I think it's made by toni and guy. It works great and takes very little to do what you are wanting. I have tried multiple things and I like this one the best. Good luck. You just have to wash their hair more often when you start using products on it, but it doesn't hurt the kiddo.

I have naturally curly hair and my daughter has inherited it. I envy the shine in her curls. I talked to my stylist about it and he told me it was because her hair has never had products or heat applied to it. For this reason, I would not use product on your sons hair. Also, products tend to build up and may cause frizz. I would suggest you get a spritz bottle of pure water and re-wet his hair every morning. Also, only wash his hair about two times a week. During other bath sessions, just rinse.

GL!

Have you ever tried Nestle's curls? I found some on ebay and you might find a store that still sells it (it has been around forever). It smells wonderful and will keep the curls. Hope this helps.

my grandson has curly hair also = and his Mom recently found a baby shampoo from Johnson & Johnson (I think!) especially for curly hair - it really works - he doesn't have that "sleep head hair" in the morning anymore.

My 2 year old daughter has very curly hair. I use a detangler in the morning to brush it and then I spray on Frizz-ease - dream curls. (from the John Frieda collection)It works really well and it keeps the hair very natural. You can't even tell that it is there. You can find it at walmart.

First of all, the best way to freshen up curly kid hair is detangler spray! It wets it down again, which brings that curl right back, without any sticky residue. (Actually I tend to just fill up a bottle with water and a little regular conditioner and it works just fine!!) But, if you want it to stay curly for the day, you are gonna have to use some product! I actually prefer some soft gel, esp for the boys, it looks less "fluffy" that way. Hubby is just gonna have to let it go:) Curly hair requires product, or being cut really short! ~A.~

Hi E.---

I have super naturally curly hair and my 2 year old dd does as well! I have found that leave in conditioner from Target, the target brand works really well to give those extra curls a BURST of bounce back. while I wash Ava's hair daily it tends to get very tangly and I saw the leave in conditioner and it really is just a bit of conditioner with water in it, but it helps her curls go back. as he gets older you might re consider washing his hair every other day as curly hair tends to dry out more than regular hair. I wash her hair daily bc she is always into something and it really needs it! As she gets older I will wash it every other day. Yes her hair sometimes goes flat. I personally use herbal essence mousse on my own hair and sometimes I put just a small pea size amount on Ava's hands and show her how to put it in her hair, not only does she love it but it teaches her how to fix her own hair. I hope this helps!!!
Also when I was young my mom used to get a spray bottle in the am or whenever and lightly spray my hair with water to help the frizz and curls stay intact. After you spray the leave in on his hair get a small pick and scrunch up his hair to keep those curls. Right after Ava gets out of the bathtub I towel dry her hair and spray, scrunch. and pick out her hair. It really does help!! When he gets older it will just be trial and error to see what product fits his hair type! I remember my mom taking me everywhere to every salon to try and "figure" out my hair. But I have found that you have to keep changing your shampoo, conditioner, and mousee regularly or else your hair just gets used to the one! I typically use biolage, Herbal Essence, Garnier. They are the best products that work on my hair!! I love my hair and find it easy to manage once I figured it all out!! By the way I have tried every single product for curly hair and sometimes the most expensive is not the best one! Thanks

Being a mother of a girl who has beautiful curly hair, I can tell you that you question is quite significant. First of all, use only good shampoos and products made for curly hair. Design Line ( I believe my Matrix) makes wonderful stuff. You have to use products, not a choice. The same nanufacturer makes great hair balms to keep frizz away. One thing for sure, you need to spend the money. Don't go cheap. Only brush the hair when it is wet. Make sure to wet it every morning and spray it with detangler or other product. But, make sure to try just water first. You may not need any product.

My son's hair is curly, and when he wakes up it can look a bit frizzy/fuzzy where he has slept on it, or he gets the "stick up straights" too. I just use "no more tears" to wet it down and help with any sort of tangles when he gets up in the mornings and after naps. I then comb it a bit (or use my hair pick which he thinks is too cool) and then tousle it. No need to have every hair in place, but I like the curls too look reasonably pretty. Even when we are just playing around the house for the day - you never know when a Kodak moment will happen!

Oh, I don't like using grownup products - they really weigh down his hair and look thick and gunky...but that's just my preference.

My oldest son had super curly hair until he was about 2 1/2 and we cut it and I used moose a lot because it is harder to control curly hair. It's not going to hurt your son if you use a little bit of hair product on him. If it gets tangled easily use some tangle free spray and I always used kids conditioner on his when it was curly. Hope this helps.

I spray it with Suave de-tangling spray in the mornings then brush it good to get any tangles out. Then I scrunch it up with my hands which brings the curls right back. Then I spritz it lightly with a spray gel. We have used Garnier Fructis Style curl shaping spray gel, and also aussie aussome volume spray gel. I like both of these! They are not a sticky hold, but help it hold curl throughout the day. I also starting washing it with a combo shampoo, one that has conditioner in it. The Suave or L'Oreal kids shampoos are tearless and contain conditioner. If not that Johnson's has one now that is also for curly hair, I don't have a bottle of it anymore, but it helped a ton when I switched to it. It is not a see through bottle, it is cream color and I think had an orange lid, I found it at Wal-Mart but only in the baby section, not up front where they have some baby stuff. HOpe this helps!

Hi E.,
My 4 yo son has curly hair too. I have tried products, but they just gunk up on his baby soft hair and he doesn't like washing it EVERY day! So, I just filled a spray bottle with water and use that to refresh the curls. Brush it first, then do a light mist with the spray bottle, run fingers through it to bring out the curls. This works great for both of us! K. G

I have very curly hair, as does my 2 yr old. For my hair, I have used Ouidad products for years. You can buy them online or at the Styling Hutch at Coit=Legacy in Plano. www.ouidad.com
For my daughter, I just use a detangling spray, like Johnson and Johnson or Suave - made for kids. Comb thru with a wide tooth comb and just give each section of hair a little twirl between my fingers and she looks great! As she gets older, I will have her use the Ouidad products too, but my stylist says not to use any more product than you have to when they are this young.

He's just playing around the house? Doesn't need to look like he just stepped out of a band box. ha. Otherwise, try just using a wet wash rag and wet his hair, and then squish it with your fingers if you don't want to use products.
