My 2 month old has had hard stool for the past to days. We recently switched him from milk based to soy based formula because he was spitting up way too much with the milk based. What can I give him to soften his stool, or should I give him time to adjust to new formula? How much time should I give him before I look for remedies or completely freak and call the dr?

What can I do next?

I'm not a big fan of all of the switching, switching, switching of formulas. Do not attempt to give him plain water or anything else until you talk to your ped's office. I just wanted to say that the nurses there are VERY used to getting calls of all kinds form moms...you should never, ever, EVER hesitate to call them with ANY & ALL questions you might have. That's why they're there!
Warm baths may help.

Did you switch to soy per your doctors recommend? Other wise I would rethink it, not only is soy not ideal for little boys, but you can actually create a lactose intolerance in kids that would not otherwise have one. Spitting up is way normal, in fact my son used to projectile vomit after almost every meal, yet he got enough still to grow and thrive. At 8 months the spitting up just stopped. It was messy, but kids are.

Formula, of any kind, typically constipates... that's one reason they add corn syrup to it. We just switched my niece's 4 month old to goat's milk and the spitting up stopped. She is actually doing 2 parts goat's milk, 2 part's distilled water, and 2 part's juiced carrots. Soy based formula is not really good for any baby but especially little boys.

Hope this helps!

Call your ped if he/she didn't recommend switching to soy..could be reflux disease which is very common in infants. My oldest had the same problem & dr recommended gerber prune juice which helped alot (def check with your ped before doing this tho).

I am curious as to why soy is bad, especially for little boys?

My baby had that when I started mixing Breastmilk and Formula around the time she was 3.5 months old. (I still have the original instructions from my doc) he said to put 1-2 tsp powder of Miralax per bottle. Max dose is 4 tsp per day. However I would call your doc just to make sure. I would think its ok because my friend used sapositories on her kid and its just a stool softner but I would hate to give you advise that is wrong for a 2 month old. I remember the powder took about 24 hours to work and all it did was soften..there was no explosion.

Try a low iron formula until the poop gets soft again.
