Has Anyone Used Medication for a Miscarriage?

I had a sonogram today (I'm 7 weeks pregnant) and we found out that it is a failed pregnancy. Now, I have to decide if I want to wait for the baby to miscarry on it's own (which frankly I think will drive me insane) or if I want a D&C (which I had in August because the baby didn't come out on it's own). He also said there is a medication I can take to induce the miscarriage. Has anyone done this before? What were your experiences? Are you glad you did that or did you wish you hadn't? I'm really hoping nature will take it's course, but it didn't last time, so I don't think it's going to. Any advice would be great! Thanks!

What can I do next?

first, i'm really sorry you're going through this. i've been through three myself. the drug they usually give is methotrexate, it's a chemotherapy drug, and my understanding is that it's quite effective, but very unpleasant, i have personally never used it. i have had two d&cs and honestly, i wouldn't recommend that route. i did well with both of mine, etc. - no complications, but after the third miscarriage, we saw a reproductive endocrinologist and he STRONGLY advised against any further d&cs - they are beginning to see a pattern of difficulty conceiving after multiple d&cs. my advice would be to give it a week or two(barring fever or other dangers to YOU), then go with the methotrexate. just to give you some hope, after a full fertility workup, my RE found "nothing" and I delivered my third child(6th pregnancy), a baby girl, 8 days ago. I also have 2 boys, 3yrs and 6yrs(pgs #1 and #3). I hope you have an outcome like mine soon, and deepest sympathies on your loss - I really am sorry :(

I would do a D&C. First of all, I am very sorry for your loss. I, too, lost a baby & I know how much it hurts.

I would do a D&C for two reasons. #1, it's in a controlled environment and you will be in a hospital with excellent care. There is no chance of starting to miscarry in the middle of the grocery store or while out to dinner.

#2, I would send the tissue to a pathologist who can tell you WHY this happened. I think it's very important to know the "why" beind it.

Again, please accept my sympathy for your loss.

First of all, I am sorry for your lost. I agree with Karen to do the D&C to find out the reason of this miscarriage. I have 7 miscarriages before (3 D&C) and trust me I can feel your pain. Based on the tissue sent to the Pathologist, doctors are able to tell me what is going wrong for those miscarriages. If it is a generic issue or mole pregnancy, there is nothing you can do about it. Therefore, I suggest you to do the D&C to find out the reason.

R.,

I, too, miscarried at 7 weeks the first time I got pregnant. It's devastating and I am so sorry you're going through this. I had the medication. It was a long time ago, but if I remember right, it wasn't a bunch of pills I had to take. It happened pretty quick. The doctor gave me a lidded-container and instructed me to bring in what passes so they could send it to be tested. I do remember horrible cramping so I wasn't out shopping when it happened. I had taken a few days off from work because I was so distraught and it happened while I was home. I always thought a D&C was for when a woman was further along because I wasn't given a choice of that or the medication. I was just given the pill to take. Although, if I had the choice, I think I would've chosen the medication to avoid an office procedure that I can only imagine is a nightmare to go through.

Again, I'm so sorry for your loss.

Hi R.,

I'm very sorry for your loss. I've experienced two miscarriages in my life and I know how hard it is.
My experience is different then yours so I may not have the best advice for you. With both of my miscarriages, I started bleeding around 7 weeks so there was no need for a D & C nature was able to run it's course. However, with my first miscarry, my OB prescribed me a medication that I can not remember the name of. I just remember there were 4 pills to take all together and after me taking the first one, I got really bad cramps so I never took the rest.
I went back for blood work until my HCG levels were at 0. Waiting to start miscarrying has got to be devastating and very frustrating. If I were in your shoes, I would go ahead with the D&C. I'm sorry you have to go through this but everything will work out how it's supposed to. Good luck and don't give up hope. After each of my miscarriages, I was able to carry very healthy babies to full term.

Take care and God bless you and your family.
