I am 5 weeks pregnant. I have high blood pressure and my doctor just put me on medication for my BP that I can take during pregnancy. I am having the worst headaches...I have always been prone to migraines and now that I can only take tylenol...somedays my head will just throb. I also have bad nausea...morning sickness...afternoon sickness...sometimes all day sickness...any advice for things I can do to decrease both of the things. I know morning sickness is common during the first trimester...but anything to minimize it would be great! And my headaches...i think are probably due to hormones....quitting caffiene....and possibly stress? Anyway any suggestions are welcome....thank you :)

What can I do next?

I dont know about the headaches, but for the nausea, this is what helped me (im 11 weeks). Frozen lemonade. Or a lemonade slushie. I have practically lived off of them for 2 weeks straight, and it helps sooo much. Watermelon too. I eat a bunch before bed and i feel full, then in the morning im not as queasy because im not as hungry. I know it sucks, im just starting to come out of it. Good luck!

I second Zofran!! That stuff is amazing for nausea and vomiting. It was a real life saver. As for headaches I think it is the increasing blood volume which causes the headaches. It usually stabilizes and the headaches will decrease.
Hope you feel better soon! and Congratulations :)

This WILL work for you, and you will love me for this.

This is for your morning sickness.
Go to Walmart, Walgreens, CVS, any Pharmacy should have this and get

" Sea Bands "

You will wear these on your wrist's.

I heard about this here on mamapedia and it truly SAVED ME from ending up in the hospital from being dehydrated.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is a little story.
One afternoon I was at Walmart with my three kids and I was pregnant.
I had my sea bands in my purse. ((( But I had forgotten about them ~ because I was feeling better. )))
So we were at the check out and I started to feel real sick. I told the cashier to please hurry because I was going to throw up. She was trying so hard to hurry.
I got my stuff and ran to our van with my kids. My oldest child helped the other two in the van and I threw our stuff in the van. I was next to the drivers side door and I was seconds away from throwing up and then I heard my oldest daughter say " MOMMY WHERE ARE YOUR SEA BANDS?"
So I scream " IN MY PURSE!"
So she grabbed them out of my purse for me and handed them to me from the window and I put them on and GUESS WHAT????????

Within seconds I was fine. I did not throw up.
I thanked the Lord for her fast thinking.
I couldn't believe I had forgotten about the sea bands.

NEEDLESS TO SAY ~ I have never forgotten about them again.

I went along time without them, I wish I new of them sooner.

I wish you the best.
Congrat's on your new bundle of JOY.

I had terrible migraines with my daughter. Everytime I tryed to give up that one cup of coffee in the morning I would end so sick. I decide that that one cup of coffee would not hurtmy daughter but not having it was hurting me. As long as you keep it to a minimum I think you'll be fine. So have a cup of coffee! Hope you feel better soon!

I don't know why this helped, but Sprees candy was my life saver for nausea when I was pregnant. I had 24 hour sickness. Though it didn't completely alleviate it, it did stop me from vomiting a lot of the times. Also, ginger poured into Sprite helped, too. You don't need to drink much (1/4 cup), so load as much ginger as you can handle. Won't taste the best, but it worked for me!

Acupuncture works great for the headaches, too!

Good luck!

call your DR, and keep him informed about what is going on with your headaches. I had terrible Migraines with my third ( a boy) during my 2nd trimester, with my first two I rarely had migraines (both boys) but for me I had to go with things like a massage, long soak in a tub, that kind of thing.

for my migraines now I did Airrosti therapy (soft tissue manipulation) and it has a God send, I rarely have them anymore. Muscular issues were a large part of my migraine pain so for me it was very affective. I wish I had it back then, the bonus is that it is similar to massage and my insurance covers it!

ps talk to your Dr about the caffeine, you may be able to just cut back slowly, which will help. when I was pregnant I would take my Tylenol with caffeine and it would knock out my migraine... but I've been caffeine free for almost 15 years, so the littlest bit is very effective when treating a migraine for me.

Oh I feel your pain. Hopefully it does get better for you. A few suggestions...don't quit your caffiene. A cup of caffiene a day is said to be absolutely fine! For sickness, I def second the sea bands. Also, I believe its Vitamin B6 is great for it too. Can buy at any drug store, walmart or target.Ask your doctor about dosage. Also, go to a motherhood store (clothing store) and get preggie pops! I don't know what it is about them but they work!! They look like cough drops...natural stuff in them. I was amazed by these! Sometimes had to suck on a few but always worked! I lost 10 pounds from throwing up so much but discovered these things and it helped a lot!
Good luck and Congrats!!

If the morning sickness is getting to bad ask the dr for Phenergan its the best medicine I've ever taken. I had horrible morning sickness with both my kids. This medicine will make you tired but it helps. If you want to a natural way then candied ginger, gingerale, peppermint candies, saltines, lots of water, club soda. Good luck and congrats I understand what you are going through, my youngest is only a month and a couple weeks.

If you are looking for home remedy type things for the nausea, there are a few things you can try that may help a little. I had nausea for my entire pregnancy (both times) and it never went away... so I've tried it all. Including prescription meds (Zofran) which were the only thing that had any real long lasting results for me.

When the WORST of it was past, I was able to quit the zofran, and use other things to get through. Sucking on those old fashioned lemon drops helped me some. Especially at night at bedtime. I had a minor case of ___ (I forget the name, but it is where you produce copious amounts of saliva during pregnancy)... and sucking on a lemon drop when I layed down for bed helped.
Some people swear by the pressure point wrist bands (sea bands?).. but they didn't do a thing for me. Nada. Just made my wrists sore from the little button part pressing on my wrist. :(
I have heard that upping your B vitamin intake can help. I suggested my pastor's wife drink some VitaminWater during her last pregnancy when she was nauseous, and she said it helped her. (It wasn't around when I was pregnant 10 yrs ago).
I found that constantly nibbling something kept that nasty nausea taste out of my mouth.... cold crisp seedless grapes, cheetos, apples, anything but crackers really.. I was sick to death of crackers.
Ginger is a natural stomach soother, and drinking ginger-ale or sipping ginger tea helps some people. I thought it was helping me a little, but by the time my pregnancy was done, I so associated the taste with the nausea that the idea of drinking a glass MADE me nauseous! And I have always liked gingerale. It took me a couple of years to regain my taste for it.
I started my mornings with cereal or scrambled eggs, and then drank a 14 oz serving of chocolate milk (Nesquik! lol) AND a 14 oz serving of red grapefruit juice in the car on my way into work (I had a 30 minute commute). Sounds gross, but I would drink the milk, then move on to the grapefruit juice. I don't know why..but it did help me some.
I found that I could taste caffeine. Anything with caffeine in it made the nausea much worse---I could taste metal or something after eating it almost-- chocolate--nope. Has caffeine. Decaf Tea--actually has a little caffeine. Some rootbeer has caffeine, some doesn't. Same with orange soda.
I LIVED off of banana ice-ees, when I could find them. So maybe try banana flavored popsicles?
Good luck. The nausea is no fun. Hopefully you'll be past this stage soon and not stuck in it the entire pregnancy.

one thing that a friend of mine swore by is eating saltines before you even sit up in the morning. it helped once or twice for me, but wasn't worth the hassle, plus i hate crumbs in the sheets. i had morning sickness well into my second trimester. but it wasn't so much i was nauseous all the time. i would be doing something and litterally out of no where i would barf. usually happened in the mornings after breakfast on my way to catch the bus to work. i don't know how many times i missed that bus because i had to change clothes. was really frustrating.

good luck, hope you weather the storm well.

Yes, your headaches are probably from the increase in hormones. Now that I'm getting near menopause, my migraines are outrageous. If your dr approves you having a little caffeine a day, then go for it. I have a restriction from caffeine, so extra strength tylenol was my friend.

As for the nausea, try Sonic ice, lemonade, or a Tbsp of honey mixed with a 1/2 tsp of powdered ginger... or a mixture of all of the above. I lived on that ice for the first trimester. I would also get up in the middle of the night and drink a Boost. It staved off my cravings and it helped with nausea to have something on my stomach.

Good luck and congratulations. It won't be too long. :)

Im sorry you don't feel good! Honestly, that's why I only have 2! I know it doesn't last forever but it sure feels like it when your miserable! Did the doc take you off caffeine? I know you need to limit it, but it may help your head. Always helped mine as well as tylenol allergy. That was the only thing that helped my head. B6 is supposed to help but all the vitamins did was make me sicker. Eating small snacks and never let yourself get hungry are important. Hang in there mama!
** I forgot about the phenegran! It comes generic form and it helped so much! Ask your doc about that too!

High BP can cause headaches. So can vomiting... the force of the vomiting often gives me headaches. When I had morning sickness during pregnancies it was so bad that I even burst blood vessels in my eyes. Cutting out caffeine completely if you used to drink it every day will cause headaches. Stress causes headaches and raises blood pressure.

Try resting and sleeping off the headaches and stress. Drink more water. You should be taking in lots of fluids.

I'm surprised that you know you're pregnant so early. I never found out I was pregnant until I was 8 weeks along and my doctor wouldn't do an ultra-sound or blood test until I was 10 weeks.

For nause: drink lots of real lemonade or suck on lemon drops or Ginger candies. Try many varieties. I prefer the Asian soft chew types. Also, the seabands work for many. Buy fresh lemons, squeeze 3-4 at at a time and add sugar/sweetener to taste. Or drink straight lemon juice squeezed in water with saltine crackers. And make sure you are eating healthy, well-balance meals each meal. Don't skimp while you're pregnant.

For headaches...who told you that you have to quit cold turkey on caffeine? Perhaps try decaf coffee first. I would recommend you wean yourself off your caffeine. Start by cutting in 1/2 for several days, then 1/2 again...then decaf...etc. You are so early along that the zygote, soon to be embryo, is not deeply implanted and exchanging huge amounts of blood and nutrients with you.

Pick up the book What to Expect When You're Expecting. They even available at thrift stores it's been out so long.

Congratulations....you're boyfriend will come around. Give him time.

Oh man I had like a 6 day headache at the beginning of this pregnancy, it was horrible. I don't completely drop caffeine during pregnancy, you may want to talk to you dr about what is considered a safe amount. I am on my third baby and have always enjoyed a cup of joe in the morning will no ill effect on my children, so that may help, again if you feel comfortable with that of course. Also going between cold backs and heating pads was a huge help to me. I have this gel pack I put in the fridge for my eyes, I think you can just get them at Wal-Mart, and I would put it on my eyes, my fore head, the base of my skull, it was awesome. I also got this little heating pad thing that actually just looks like a tube sock that is filled with rice. You just pop it in the microwave and you can manipulate it lots of ways to put it on sore places on your neck, head or back. Total life saver, I think it was like $9 or something at Wal-Mart. The final thing I did that really helped a lot was getting to the tension that was built up between my shoulder blades with a tennis ball. I just laid on the floor and stuck the tennis ball on knots that had formed from the pain going all the way down the side of my head. Then I gently rolled myself on the ball right on the tense spots. Better than any proffessional massage I have ever had! That helped a lot. Good luck! I am now 13 wks and happy to report that headaches are all gone. Hang in there :D

i had both horrible headaches and nausea in the beginning of all 3, the headache was how i knew by the third.... i took a lot of tylenol. def try to quit everything you can, and drink a lot more water, but i would ask my doctor but now looking back, ill bet a cup of coffee is better than a tylenol... dont know... as for the nausea, keep some crackers next to the bed with some stale ginger ale and eat/drink before you even sit up in the morning. take your time getting up. and soy milk helped me soooooo much. i used to drink a big glass once a day, sometimes another little bit if i was feeling really crappy. lots of sugar though.... but it helped my tummy a lot.... and they both passed in a few weeks! the good news!!!

Hi N.,

I can relate to the morning sickness...I still think I got nauseaus at conception and it lasted til I was in labor, lol... Ginger is very good for the nausea and completely safe. If you drink gingerale make sure it has natural ginger in it but you can take it in a capsule form as well.

The newest research on migraines is that there may be a lack of calcium. My husband has migraines and when he is taking his vitamins regularly he doesn't seem to have them so that goes along with the research. All vitamins are not the same and some simply do not absorb and some are even dangerous because of the free radicals they create. If you don't know anything about your prenatal, research. It's terribly important. If you find it's not a good one, I can recommend one that is guaranteed to absorb and is reasonably priced. The vitamins absorbing will also help with the morning sickness. People used to tell me the baby was sucking all the life out of me. I was getting no nutrition, the baby was getting it all. If your vitamin absorbs, you AND the baby get the nutrition...

My two cents....and Congratulations!
