How Can I Deal with This Horrible Morning Sickness?

Does anybody know how to ease morning sickness?
Rolaids, salty snacks and crackers, iced water, 7up, lemon... you name it! Nothing works! I feel sick all the time. I am 8 weeks pregnant, the last two weeks have been a nightmare. Constant nausea (24/7). This is worse than having the flu! Evenings are the worst. I haven't expereinced vomiting at all. So I think that is the worse.... having nausea and not vomiting? Horrible feeling! My mouth tastes sour all the time. And all aromas make me feel sicker. (Foods, cleaners, perfume, etc). I feel tired and depressed.
I am taking prenatal vitimins.

So What Happened?

Thank you everybody for your help, suggestions and support! I still need to try the ginger stuff (tea, candy, etc) I have not been able to go out to the store though. I felt so sick I ended calling my Dr. They gave me a medicine that is helping some. It does not take the nausea completely away but at least is not as bad.

1. Stop the vitamins! They make anyone sick and you don't need them.
2. Eat something light before getting up off the pillow each day.
3. Try eating no dairy and a little several times a day.
My daughter does all of the above and it is still bad for about 21 weeks. But it is worth it. She has 5 and wants #6 anytime.

Try iced or lukewarm peppermint tea. Peppermint helps settle the stomach and stave off nausea. Not serving it hot keeps the aroma down.

It works better when it is made with an actual piece of hard candy instead of a prepackaged flavored tea.

Someone I know uses these bands that have magnets in them for the nausea. She says you can get them at CVS, or any place like that. She also was prescribed 2 medications by her ob/gyn that are safe to take while pregnant. She has been much better ever since. : )

I had the same thing at the beginning of my pregnancy (I'm 28 weeks now). The only thing that worked for me was drinking ginger tea. It has to be 100% ginger. It's basically just ginger root in a tea bag. I would just sip on a cup all day and it really helped. I know that the nausea makes you not want to eat which then makes the nausea worse. I would then drink a cup of this tea right before or during eating and I was then able to get something down! Here is the brand that I got it's Triple Leaf Tea. You can probably find it at Whole foods, Market Street, Central Market or Sprouts. Good Luck!

I highly recommend the book "The Morning Sickness Companion." It not only offers lots of suggestions, but also explains the science behind morning sickness, and, most importantly, lets you know that you are NOT alone! Lots of us go through this, and it's unpleasant, but you will get through it, and the baby makes it all worthwhile! And although it's not okay to actually do, it is fine to mentally imagine smacking the woman in the head everytime someone tells you, "ohhh, i LOVED being pregnant! It was the happiest time of my life! I felt great!" URGH! NOT helpful! LOL!

UNISOM (ask your doctor!)
I had extreme morning sickness with both pregnancies which landed me in the hospital often for rehydration (I've been on both phenargen & zofran - I like the lighter drug in Unisom). My second was much better because my doctor told me about using unisom (ASK YOUR DOCTOR first!) - there are two types and you'll need to make sure you use the right one. I took about half a pill and it cut the nauseau considerably - and as long as I stayed busy I didn't get too sleepy. I would definitely ask your doctor - I asked the nurse and she knew nothing about it but then it was actually on an info sheet she faxed me... too funny. But I'm pretty paranoid, so I double checked with my doctor - he said it was fine. The active ingredient in Unisom is actually a common drug they prescribe in Canada for morning sickness.

I didn't read the other responses but have gone through it twice. Each pregnancy (currently 6.5 months now) has lasted until 5/6 months and with this one it has been MUCH worse. Last time it was only at night, this one all day. I tried the sea bands, they can help some if you wear them BEFORE the nausea starts - get them at Wal-Mart or any pharmacy.

Ginger helps a lot. I HATE ginger so I took ginger capsules that I found at a health food store. Just take them in the morning.

I couldn't take a prenatal in the very beginning - try to get one without iron. My midwife prescribed premisis vitamin to me which is designed for women with m/s. You can try that instead for a month or so and then try a normal prenatal again.

Vitamin B6 helps some - it did NOTHING for me :(

And finally with this pregnancy I became SOOO desperate that I tried acupuncture. I went to Dr. Calli in Keller. She's totally awesome and it helped the most. The first treatment dramatically reduced my symptoms. The second one didn't help that much but I was already feeling SOOOOO much better after the first. She takes insurance and even if not it's $60 for the session and she says most women need 1-3 sessions max.

I have taken Zofran this time and last but HATE taking drugs esp. while pregnant. This is why I tried virtually everything else including the acupuncture this time around. It's what helped the most. If you do get zofran, make sure they prescribe you the dissolvable kind - the other one doesn't work nearly as well, and not at all if you're already sick when you go to take it (or at least for me it didn't).

Good luck! I hope you can find something that helps. I know how badly it sucks to feel that way for months on end.

Just hang in there... I'm 24 weeks and was sick through week 12. I never vomited but had nausea all the time. Always having something in my stomach (I carried around goldfish and cheese sticks all the time) helped during the day. I also made sure I ate something right before bed (toast with peanut butter worked best) and then kept something on my night stand and ate it before I even sat up (peanut butter crackers worked best). I never got rid of the nausea but it helped a lot. Good luck and congrats!

these may be repeats but a few things that helped relive mine (not completely but helped) were:
1. sea bands
2. ginger gum,
3. dried ginger pieces
4. ginger tea or ginger spritzer which was yummy (made it myself by boiling a little water, fresh peeled ginger & sugar to make ginger syrup which I then added to cranberry juice and seltzer water. If you want amounts on these let me know.
5. ZOFRAN- I still take it occasionally and it does help me alot with nausea/ vomiting
6. eating carbs or protein helped, never let your tummy get empty
7. Unisom (doxylamine succinate)

I used different things with both pregnancies at different times.

Poor thing! I had nausea/vomiting 24/7 for the first four months with my first child and it was hell! You have had a lot of great suggetions but I have one more for you. There is an over the counter liquid called Emetrol that was a TOTAL lifesaver for me. It's very thick and sweet because it has fructose syrup in it. It coats your stomach and keeps the acid down. For some people it's hard to get used to but I was sick I would have done anything. There are two flavors, cherry and lemon. I would NOT suggest the lemon, it actually made me sicker but you might prefer it. It's not very expensive and CVS has a store brand that will save you a couple of bucks. I had it everywhere with me, my car,house, purse, etc... I am 9 months pregnant now and have had it on this time as well since I have needed it a couple of times. Good luck and hang in there. After five pregnancies and months of sickness this is what I found to work for me:

1. Always keep something in your stomach. Nibble on crackers throughout the day if you have to just don't let it get empty. Fruit loops help too, dry, no milk, carry a bag in your purse.

2. Preggie pops are fabulous. I actually like the candies much better than the actually lollipops. Buy a box and keep them with you at all times!

3. Drink sparkling water like Perrier, not sweet stuff, helps a lot, and keeps you hydrated. There's something in the bubbles that soothes the stomach.

I had "morning" sickness all day everyday for six months with my first and varied with each one. My doctor told me that your attitude helps too. If you're happy and positive, it takes the edge off a bit although that's hard to accomplish when you're hanging your head in the toilet ;) Which brings me to the last one...
3. If it gets bad, throw up, make yourself, you'll feel better after it's done, then start over with the crackers water and candies. (Oh, peppermint tea helped a little bit too, forgot about that one) I think you're right, being sick without actually BEING sick is worse!

I hope some of this help and I want to congratulate you on your pregnancy. It's a wonderful time and I miss it! I used to talk to my baby and let him know that he was so worth all the sickness but that I would be so much happier if he would let me have just one good day ;) Sounds crazy I know, but it made me feel better that we were in it together!!

For me the mineral water San Pelligrino was the ticket. I asked my doc and he said that all mineral waters have different mineral levels and that Pelligrino was known to be high in calcium--something which has a calming effect of the stomach. I drank it all through and noticed it calmed the heartburn as well. I bought it at Costco as it is cheaper by the case. I have never tried but have heard those lemon drops do help! Also, grated fresh ginger into tea is a common cure.

My doctor gave me a precription for something that would take the nausea away. They worked pretty good. I can't remember the name of the drug but you should ask your doctor. Mine went away after the 2 or 3rd month. Good luck.

I experienced the same thing and tried multiple over the counter nausea meds and sea bands that put pressure on your wrists.. nothing. So my ob/gyn told me to try Vitamin B6.
AND IT WORKED! it was a miracle in a bottle! N., i was able to sit down and eat at a CHINESE RESTRUANT and not feel queasy about the dif aromas. I hope it works for you. Good Luck sweet pea..

I'm 25 weeks pregnant with my second and both times have experienced morning sickness for the first 20 weeks. The first time I lost 20 lbs and was hospitalized and this time I only lost 15lbs. I've tried everything from the sea bands, preggie pops, ginger, b6, to peppermint. As far as prescription drugs I've had phenegran which didn't do anything but knock me out...which doesn't help when you have to continue functioning. Zofran is the only thing that provided any relief for me both times. The second time around I had to really push my doc to prescribe it, but once she figured out how much weight I was losing she was on board. It is expensive but they do have a generic version which helps with the cost. My advice is if you've tried everything and nothing helps, push for the Zofran. It is the only thing that saved me! Best of luck and know you have my deepest sympathy.

I feel your pain, I had it bad too. I don't know if I had it as bad as you but one thing that helped me was a nice bowl of oatmeal in the morning which made me feel full for a long time and eating regularly before nausea could set in. But any smell could make me nauseous and vomit. Just so you know the latest studies indicate that caffeine consumption during pregnancy, even in very small amounts, can cause heart problems for your child later in life. Experts have recommended avoiding it completely.

Before you try the drugs, go to the pharmacy and spend a few dollars on "Sea Bands". They are little bracelet type things you wear around your wrists that put pressure on a pressure point. I had the same problem and a coworker kept insisting that these work. I thought she was crazy and wouldn't try them so she finally bought them for me. OH MY GOSH!! I felt so much better. They don't work for everyone but they did an amazing job for me. Also, I second whoever said check your prenatal. Mine made me sick so I had to take it at night. With my 2nd pregnancy I had a different doctor who prescribed me a prenatal that didn't make me nearly as sick. Congrats and good luck. The 2nd trimester you'll feel great so just hang in there!

I am also pregnant and have been having bad morning sickness as well. I have found that if I eat a bunch of small meals throughout the day instead of three regular meals, that I feel better. With my first daughter I ate Sour Patch Kids for the first 3 months and that helped, but this time nothing has helped except not letting myself get hungry. Hope this helps and congratulations!

Hi there. I am sorry for your morning sickness, well, all day sickness! The first thing I suggest is to take your prenatal vitamins after you eat dinner and with a full glass of water. This has helped during my second pregnancy. The second thing is: peppermint is a natural anti-nausea medicine. You can get some peppermint oil and put a little dab behing your ears. I used to suck on peppermints also. It helped me, but there isno cure but time.

N., first, congrats on your pregnancy. Second, morning sickness is horrible but a good sign that a beautiful miracle is growing inside of you. My first pregnancy and my third were my worst with the all day sickness. With my first I tried everything, nothing worked. Then my mom made me some weak, sweet tea and someone else advised me to get some Ginger Snap cookies. The weak, sweet tea along with saltines or Ginger Snaps were very helpful. I still use the weak,sweet tea fix for my kids nausea these days. Ginger has a natural nausea fix in it, so you can eat Ginger Snaps or you can have someone make you some soup with Ginger in it. I did that for a friend who was having chemo treatments...it did the trick for her nausea too. Another possibility after checking with your doctor would be to use an antihistamine like Benadryl. These help with nausea as well. I had to stop certain meds while pregnant and my docs replaced one with Benadryl to help with nausea and sleep disturbance and pain. It was safe and very helpful. These days I still use Benadryl when I have nausea with a migraine. Hope this helps.

My Dr told me to stop the vitaims for a while. Eat small light meals. Drink kool aid or lemon with water when I feel sick. I use to always carry sweat tarts or hard candy with me to get any nausa taste out of my mouth. And motion sickness pills helped ones that was approved by the Dr of course

I had that with my last pregnancy..I was HORRIBLE sick..had the same symptoms as you, but couldn't even hold down water..kept having to be hospitalized and home nursing care..this was my WHOLE pregancy! I felt like I wanted to die..that is ho horrible I felt. I had Hyperemisis..which happens in 2 % of pregnancies.they don't know why it happens but it does...the moment I had my son (3 weeks early thank goodness)...I was totally fine..talk to you dr. about it..mine started at 5 weeks, good luck to you..I know how you feel.

This may sound counterintuitive, but a big glass of milk helped me with my first. It worked for my sister, too... And like some of the other posters, anything minty helped some too, as well as ginger tea with my 3rd. I always had a bad taste in my mouth with my 3rd, too. What is UP with that?! haha! That did go away about halfway through, thank goodness. Good luck! It'll all be worth it in the end! :)

Go to your nearest Super Target and go down the candy aisle, they have these really big lemon drops that worked great for me. Lemon drops were my lifesaver. I worked full time and had terrible sickness just like you're describing. It does get better, hang in there!!

I can totally relate after going through two pregnancies! :) This last time, I was sick for a whole week (at around 8 weeks like you.) However, I changed my prenatal vitamin (which I was on with my first pregnancy and it was totally fine.) Within 24 hours the nausea went away!!! Both kinds were from my doctor, and I"m not even sure what the difference was in them. I would suggest trying this first before anything else.

ZOFRAN! It does the trick and doesn't make you sleepy. Funny, but my daughter got a stomach bug and she was prescribed the same thing. Smaller dose of course. Get your doc to give you an rx for it.

Bless your heart, I feel like you are reading my bio of the first 14 weeks of my pregnancy. It was truly awful, I know. A few things that might help - you may have tried these too, but you didn't mention them...
1. Take the prenatal before bed with crackers. That might help a little. And have crackers or something on your bedside table that you can start to snack on the second you wake up.
2. Mine turned out to be morning sickness along with heartburn and acid reflux. I started daily Prilosec or some other heartburn med (more powerful than Rolaids) per my doctor's suggestion, and that did help.
3. I also found that never letting my stomach become empty helped. Seriously, constantly eating SOMETHING seemed to help. Whether crackers, bread, soup, sandwiches, chips, fruit, anything to keep that stomach full. I could tell if I went too long without food, and I eventually became terrified to be without something to nosh on. My friends made fun of me because I would order one sandwich at Subway for lunch and one foot long to take back to work and snack on during the afternoon. And my desk became a one-woman vending machine. Yes, this caused some weight-gain, but nothing too terrible. And it was better than the weight loss that I was suffering from.
4. I kept Tums at my desk too and chewed on those all the time. And Preggie Pops are an option. Ginger snaps or cookies can help too. Someone gave me some ginger candy, but that was too peppery to suck on for long; the cookies are better, imo.
5. Ultimately, around 14 weeks, it all went away. It seemed like the world's longest nightmare, I know. I told my husband at one point that having a baby might have been the dumbest idea we ever had. But it wasn't. :)

Hang in there. It's worth it. And get started on some good heartburn meds and stock up on food - those were the keys for me.

I think we are twins! I had the same problem, was nauseous until into my second tri-mester. What a beating! First of all, no clue why...jolly ranchers help - go figure. Also, take your prenatals at night NOT in the morning and try with milk. Carbs helped me a lot but to be honest, I just suffered through it. I couldn't drink water for a long time, I used to hate ice but ice was the only way to get it down. I also got those motion sickness bracelets and they helped but nothing cured it. I told everyone that it would have been waaay better if I could throw up, at least mentally some relief but I feel your pain. I swear, I was just like you and the day it passes you will be praising God!! Hang in there.. you are close!

I was really sick too. You just have to bear it . Doctors can give you something. I chewed candied ginger. It helped. The good news is that your baby is healthy..that's what my doctor told me.

One of my pregnancies was like that through the first trimester. I taught school so eating several times throughout the day was tough for me. I did find that GINGER worked best. Ginger ale, ginger snap cookies, i hear there is some ginger gum, i did some ginger hot tea b/c it was winter. I also found that if I tried to stay HYDRATED it was much better. Evenings were the worst! Just bundle up and crawl in bed! :0)
Good luck, I just had my 2nd last monday and can tell you that it is worth it in the end, even though every day seems to stink!!

Well, I would suggest two things..both drugs unfortunately. You need some Zofran..if the dr. will prescribe. At least some Phenergen, which did make me quite tired, and I like Zofran better, but it is harder to get insurance to pay for (at least it was:) Also, you could be experiencing some acid reflux as well, so some prevacid might help. I wish I could tell you that I got better after 12 weeks, it did not happen..but I can also tell you that I have survived 4 yucky pregnancies, each with varying degrees of sickness, and am on my 5th..so you will make it, and even want to do this again! Get outside as much as you can..the fresh air and sunshine is helpful. I have to drink a coke (from McD's specifically) to feel ok some of the time. I also admit that I am not great about vitamins..they make me miserable, but there have been some that are easier to tolerate than others, so ask your dr. Some people swear by the motion sickness wrist bands and others by ginger. I have never found the magic trick..just patience I guess. I feel your pain! As many have said, hang in there and it will subside by week 12-14, just like a miracle! Try to stay away from as many smells as possible (i banned cooking and practically all food in our house for a couple of the worst weeks :) and try to sleep as much as possible. Stay hydrated with water and ice chips. On good days I could tolerate Anna's Ginger Thins, which I kept in the freezer (they went down better if cold). You can get them at World Market or some grocery stores.
Also do talk to your physician because if it persists there are some medical treatments...

N.-You have had so many responses that I haven't read all of them so you may have already gotten this advice but here's my 2 cents... I had horrible morning sickness with my third. It was just like yours - all day, worse in the evenings, couldn't stand any smells, didn't really throw up that much, just felt AWFUL. The very thought of food was more than I could stand! Anyway, Preggy Pops (available online, at Babies R Us or at Motherhood stores)or ginger tea eased it for me. My sister-in-law swears by Juicy Fruit gum. Good luck, I hope you find some releif soon.

I'll tell you what I did. Drink a plain cold Coca-cola. I lived on them for several months because I had really bad nausea and vomiting. This may sound kinda gross but it helped me to burp and relieve some of the pressure. I ate a few saltines with it. My OB told me to drink warm coke and it sounded gross to me(you know when you're pregnant you can't even hear some things because it'll make you sick). But the cold coke worked for me. Let me stress, it wasn't a cure all, but it helped. I know that some people don't do caffiene when pregnant, but I was desparate and this was my experience. Also, my husband had to stop wearing his colongne that I picked out for him because it made me throw up. Keep a list of things that make you sick and avoid them. Good Luck.

N., I was the exact same way... and thought too, If I could just thow up I would feel so much better! It helped to keep something on my stomach all day - crackers etc. I did ask my doc about it and he prescribed Phenegran (sp?). It helped but just makes you sleepy - I was fine with sleepy compared to nauseous! For the first trimester all I could eat was scrambled eggs and toast, which I ate for breakfast/lunch/and dinner! Then in the second it changed to McDonalds burger and fries - ?! I guess you just eat what you can! Hang in there and hopefully it won't last long! Best wishes and congratulations!

Raw almonds - not roasted because they don't help. I was told this by a Japanese lady married to a Danish man. Apparently it's an old Danish rememdy.

I have a terrible first pregnancy it was completely sorted with the second and the almonds. You just keep munching them all day.... and they are a wonderful source of calcium for both you and the baby

I buy mine from Kroger in a little tin in the nut section. They are by Blue Diamond and it says 'Whole Natural'.

I had the same experience with each of my pregnancies. I found that sucking on Jolly Ranchers helped a lot. You always have to have something in your stomach -- sounds weird I know but it will help. Good luck.

I don't have any advice, unfortunately...but I wanted to let you know that I had the same thing, massive nausea and no vomiting---but it only lasted 2-3 weeks so I'm hoping for you that it goes away quickly. Be glad for the no vomiting! :)

I feel your pain! The only thing that worked for me was to drink Perrier on ice with some lime squeezed in it. Also, if you make sure you ALWAYS have something in your stomach, that helps. You may have to eat every single hour to manage that. And you might want to replace the prenatals with a multivitamin and folic acid supplement. Something about those prenatals always made me sick and my OB said a good multivitamin (I used Arbonne's b/c it was natural) and folic acid is the same as a prenatal. Trust me that the nausea w/o vomit is WAY better than vomitting. I had a friend who would vomit 3-6 time A DAY for almost her whole pregnancy!!! Count your blessings!

the stuff that worked for me or friends of mine is this...

always keeping a "full" tummy...basically never letting yourself get hungry.
When you are craving something/something sounds good to eat, eat it right then. It might just be what your body needs
the motion sickness wrist bands worked really well for a friend of mine. I have no personal experience with these.
Some prenatal vitamins can contribute to the problem. Talk to your doc about some ones that might be more gentle on the tummy.
Never get out of bed w/o eating something
always keeps snacks around (nuts and pop tarts worked great for me b/c they kept me a little more full than anything else)
dr. pepper seemed to soothe my stomach

Actually, iron and a couple other portions of vitamins can actually cause nausea, or at least just make it worse. I would suggest stop taking the vitamin- ESPECIALLY if it is a syntheic one- the ones you buy at wal-mart or get from a pharmacy. It won't hurt you to stop taking it, it's not as big of a deal as people make you think. Go without it for a week, trust me, people lived hundreds of years before us without vitamins, it's not that big of a deal to go without the sacred vitamin. If you get better and figure out it was the vitamin, yet still want to be taking a vitamin, go to a natural foods/ health store and get a food-based natural one that is not synthetic. If you want the name of the one I take, email me. It includes a lot of minerals too, which is even more important than actual vitamins for the body. I super hope you feel better soon, that's no fun at all. Take Care!

If you can stomach it, mix a teaspoon of ginger in a tablespoon of honey. The ginger should help the nausea and the honey will make it stay a little longer.

Get sonic ice. The texture and chewing helped when I was sick.

If you are waking in the middle of the night (I would wake at 4 am every night), drink a Boost. That got me through a lot of issues.

I was sick almost my entire pregnancy with both of my babes. My dr first gave me phenergan which made me EXTREMELY tired...I fell asleep at work once! I then tried zofran and that worked WONDERS! My last pregnancy was back in 2004 and my insurance hardly covered it. Just recently I was ill enough that I was given another prescription of zofran....needless to say, I was nervous to have it filled, thinking we couldn't afford it. When I went to pick up the prescription, it was only $5! They now have a generic for it, I believe!

I had it really bad and couldn't stomach anything. nothing worked for me either. It got better about 4 - 4 1/2 months into the pregnancy. A woman I knew told me to keep eating and I started out by eating shredded wheat and crackers and just vomiting when I had to and then eating some more a couple of hours later. It sounded really opposite of what I thought would work, but eventually the eating actually helped and I got used to throwing up all the time and then the vomiting gradually went away. I still get nauseous to this day when I smell cleaners or even think about the apartment I lived in when I was pregnant!

I remember feeling so sick that I wished I would vomit and maybe I'd feel better. Preggo pops or suckers didn't work at ALL for me! Waste of money and they aren't cheap IMO. I ate something every few hours to keep myself from having an empty stomach and I also drank ginger ale every morning and whenever I felt sick. I had to switch pr. vitamins, too. I took one that made me sooo sick and when I changed the nausea wasn't near as bad.

My doctor said eat eggs as soon as you get out of bed. Pee first of course. This worked!!! plus its good for the developement of the baby. Carbs first thing always made me feel sick.

Prenatal vitamins made me much sicker. I stopped taking them and felt immediately better. You could get some without iron and see if they help---iron can nauseate some people.

I still felt queasy until the second trimester. It's almost as if someone flips a switch for me. Happened to me every single one of my 8 pregnancies (yep, 8 babies).

I think it is much better to get nutrition from food than supplements---although supplements definitely have their place. So go a couple of weeks without the supplements and see if that helps.

My first pregnancy was awful. However, I did have the vomiting as well and had to go to the hospital twice for IV's from being so dehydrated. My pregnancies since have been more bearable. Here are some things that helped me: lemon drops, cinnamon gum, pregnancy tea from a health food store (if you like hot tea, it kinda had a minty taste), hot mint tea. I also noticed a big difference depending on the type of prenatal vitamins I took. Sometimes you can get samples from your ob/gyn that have less iron (which is hard on your tummy)and more b12 vitamins that help with nausea. I found taking them at night helps with the nausea. There was also a great brand of prenatal vitamins that you can purchase at a health food store that made me feel much better - it was supernutrion brand. I also could not take any smells and if I got too tired, it was worse. Drinking Coke sometimes helped. Also, tell your doctor. With my first, I did not know to ask for help. I loved phenegren - it makes you sleepy, but I would take it at night and sleep really good and wake up and get a good breakfast down and that would get me through the day. I have other friends who swear by another drug that they give pregnant women ( the name escapes me) and it also given to cancer patients to combat nausea. The chiropractor can also usually help. It is awful to feel so horribly. I practically lived in my nightgown for awhile and scared my husband -so don't do that. :) It helps when you figure out what works for you. Peanut butter on my pancakes was my food of choice!

I am 8 months pregnant with my first, and totally feel for you! The first part is miserable, but it does get so much better, I promise. Hang in there for a few more weeks! I had more indigestion than nausea in the beginning, but the only thing that really worked to calm my stomach was peppermint tea. I would drink 1 cup a day when I felt the worst, and it worked surprisingly well! Celestial Seasonings makes it, so it's not hard to find, and there's no caffeine. You have to be careful about taking any herbs during pregnancy, of course, since some can have negative effects. But I have not found anything that says peppermint is a real concern. When I mentioned it to my Dr., she didn't seem to have a problem with it. Good luck and congratulations!

I'm so sorry! You might talk to your doctor about some medicines you can go on. I went on something they give to cancer patients to treat nausea. Zofran is what I went on. I've known several people who have gone on it and it has helped to some degree. I threw up everything until 21 weeks, I lost 20+ lbs the first 4 months of my pregnancy and had a ton of IV for fluids.

I stopped taking my prenatals for the first trimester and then only at night, right before bed after that. Now that is my routine (pregnant again). I took Zofran with both pregnancies until I came out of the morning sickness phase. Lifesaver!! There is also another anti-nausea med. that my doctor said I could take along with the Zofran if I needed it. I would alternate them every 4 hours. Just ask your dr.

I would really talk to your doctor about this. I had "morning" sickness so bad with my son I lost 15lbs. and was really close to being hospitalized for dehydration. For me the only thing that worked was the Zofran, it is now a generic thank God!, and phenergan for at night. Be careful if all your doc will perscribe is the phenergan, it will make you very sleepy. Im sorry my advice isnt going to be very good but it is honest.I tried everything anyone told me but nothing helped i just got used to it i would throw up everyday but it will get better.Everytime you throw up or feel sick just try to think about why you are sick.Think about that precious little angel growing inside and know that it will just be a few months and you will have a lifetime of joy with your child.Enjoy the second trimester it is the best you will feel the baby kick and get your cute prego belly and find put the sex of your child.Definitly the second trimester is the best.Then the third trimester you just have to stick it out you cant sleep and your belly gets heavy and you get to where you are like get this freaking thing out of me now!!!But after you hold that beautiful baby in your arms the first you will know it was all worth it.Just hang in there you will get used to it and it will get better.Sorry I couldnt give you the miricale cure but i am just trying to be honest.Congrats!!!

Hi N., I'm in the same boat. I'm 8 weeks along with my fourth child and have spent the past two weeks in bed. I'm okay as long as I am lying down, but as soon as I'm vertical I get dizzy and weak and the nausea gets worse. One of the things that does seem to help is drinking peppermint tea. Especially, if I drink it 10 or 15min after eating. It helps ease the queasiness and helps me keep my food down. I'm alo eating at least every two hours...small meals. If I skip one, it takes me forever to recover. I've also had some success sucking on crystalized ginger I get at sprouts or whole foods. My OB recommended ginger pills too..I haven't tried those yet though. I also chew gum all the time or eat sunflower seeds to rid my mouth of the taste and help dry up all the extra saliva I'm producing.

And yes, the constant nausea with no vomitting is the worst because there's no relief. I vomit once a day as soon as I wake up and then I feel good for about 15minutes... long enough to eat breakfast (which my husband makes and I eat in bed so I have something in my belly before I stand up to decrease the dizziness)...and then I have my peppermint tea which buys me another 30minutes and after that...it's hit or miss to find the rare food or position that makes my tummy happy.

Oh.. last thing.. prenatal vitamins make me REALLY sick so I take mine at night so that helps too if you haven't already tried that.

The other thing I do is just keep telling myself I only have to make it through about 4 more weeks...

Wow I could have written this e-mail! I experienced the exact same thing both times that I was pregnant. The good news is that it will subside. It started getting better week 10-12 and was gone by week 13. I laid off the prenatal viatimins until the 2nd trimester per the dr's orders. The payoff is so worth it and you will have selective memory after your beautiful baby is born and won't remember how bad it was. Good Luck and congrats.

When I was pregnant I had to take 1/2 of a prenatal vitamin for the first 3 months. I was sick almost the whole time, but it did get better after the first tri-mester. This last time around, my doctor prescribed a prenatal vitamin that was easier on the stomach. You might ask him/her about that. Eat before you take the vitamin - something simple like dry toast, crackers or even a ginger snap. Yes, ginger is a natural way to calm that sick stomach feeling.

I chewed gum like 24/7..it always helped me for some reason. I usually would try to chew some sort of sweet gum..it worked best, but any kind of gum will work.

You poor thing! I can totally relate. I had terrible morning sickness for the first 16 weeks and like you, rarely actually vomitted. My Dr. does not beleive in medications for nausea, so this is what worked for me.

I tried several different prenatal vitamins and finally went with one that caused the least amount of queasiness. I took it with lunch or dinner, as those were my biggest meals. I kept peppermints with me at all times b/c they would fend off spouts of nausea, as well as give me a better taste in my mouth! LOL! I kept gingerale and saltines by my bedside and drank a half a glass and ate about 5-10 crackers upon waking up-- before ever getting out of bed-- to prevent early morning nausea. This may sound crazy, but I also resorted to wearing a motion sickness bracelet. People at work used to make fun of my "funny" jewelry, but I swear it helped.

Also, if a particular smell bothers you, don't be afraid to try to change it. I had a co-worker whose perfume made me ill and I finally (very nicely) asked her if she could tone it down, switch to something else, etc. and she was very accomodating.

Like many others I too had morning sickness without vomiting. And it was 24/7. In glancing through the posts I did not see a recommendation for acupuncture. It is wonderful. If you have never had it before, it is amazing. I would try that or some of the natural remedies before going to the prescription medications. I will just second what the other mom's have suggested. Talk to you Dr about a prescription for the nausea and also see if you can try a different prenatal vitamin or at least try taking it at night.

I suffered just like you are with my first two pregnancies and with this one!! I am now 36 weeks and I was SO thrilled when I started feeling nauseous again at 32 weeks!! I have found that the fast dissolve tums works well for my acid reflex and sudden nausea and my Dr. recommended Pepcid Complete, but I haven't tried it yet. (Who has energy to go to the store?!?)

The nausea did subside around 16 weeks for me. I know that is several weeks out for you, but it will get better. Try to focus on the great miracle (although it might not feel like it now) that is happening. It will all be worth it when you feel the baby kick and move for the first time and of course when the baby finally arrives.

Bless Your Heart === I know you've gotten a lot of advice, but here is my 2 cents worth.
1. Don't let your tummy get empty. Saltines and caffeine free coke worked great for me. I lived on them for 3 months.
2. Buy good quality peppermint hard candies. This will help w/the nausea.
3. Hang in there - soon you will have a little miracle.

:( I'm so sorry! I had the same thing with my second child. Find what helps or at least doesn't affect you and surround yourself with it. For me it was oranges and orange juice. I had to hold one to my nose constantly! For you it may be flowers or a freshly laundered shirt. If it's really bad, talk to your Midwife (or OB) and they will give you recommendations and perhaps meds.

I had the same problem....My midwife had me take 25 mg of B6 (vitamin - over the counter) 3x day. She couldn't explain why it works, however IT DID!!! See excerpt from baby center below..Good luck!

Does vitamin B6 help with morning sickness?

Morning sickness is very common in early pregnancy. If you're having trouble keeping food down, you may want to ask your doctor about taking extra vitamin B6 (also known as pyridoxine) in addition to your regular prenatal vitamin. No one knows for sure why extra vitamin B6 helps relieve nausea, and it doesn't work for all women, but it's worth a try.

A pregnant woman who isn't plagued by queasiness needs only 1.9 milligrams (mg) of vitamin B6 a day to help make antibodies, red blood cells, and neurotransmitters and to meet the needs of her developing baby.

The dose recommended for easing nausea and vomiting is much higher — 10 to 25 mg, three times a day — but check with your healthcare provider first. She can tell you how much to take and whether the amount in your prenatal vitamin should count as one of the doses. (The amount of vitamin B6 in prenatal supplements varies by brand.)

Don't take more vitamin B6 than your caregiver recommends. Too much can cause numbness and nerve damage and may not be safe for your developing baby.

Sometimes nausea during pregnancy can be due to dehydration. Gorge yourself with water! Due to all of the hormone surges happening in your body, the water helps things move about faster and doesn't let the hormones linger and build in your blood stream causing the nausea. If this doesn't seem to be helping, there is a great tasting supplement called GreensFirst that has fruit/veggies and probiotics and can soothe the digestive lining so that your body feels more balanced. You may need to switch prenatal brands to something your body utilizes better if you aren't feeling well on them and don't forget to take your omega 3's to curb that depression!

Cut out the prenatal vitamins for now, and talk to your OB about prescription meds if it's really bad. I normally avoid all drugs during pregnancy and childbirth, but severe nausea and/or vomiting is where I draw the line - it can make your life miserable.

Have you tried almonds?? I had horrible morning sickness and that helped. I ended up having to go on prescription meds but it made me super-tired (better than nausea though).

And, my Doc told me to take a half-pill of my vitamins, too.

Medicine! Please do not suffer under the false assumption that pregnant women can't take medication! The doc can prescribe some medicine to ease your nausea. I have known many women to take finnergan in the evening... it will make you sleepy, but at least you won't be sick! Certain pharamicts can even make it for you in a gel that is spread onto your wrist. There are other options as well. If your doc is anti-medicine, then go to a different one. Demand relief. I hated that morning sickness. Especially with my last daughter. The only relief I got was when I was asleep. Just know that this will pass. It seems counter-intuitive, but eat. It does help to have several small meals. It will feel like you are snacking all day. As bad as you feel, don't let yourself get hungry. Make sure that the snacks are healthy. I was naseous until the second trimester.

I feel your pain N.! I just went through this (I am now 20 weeks pregnant). My morning sickness got so bad that the oral medication Zofran did not help and I was losing weight so the doctor perscribed a infusion pump which basically gives you anti-nausea med's 24 hours a day. Hopefully it will not get to that point for you. I would suggest your first move is to tell the doctor how miserable you are and he/she will probably give you some sort of anti-nausea med's which hopefully will help you or at the very least take the edge of the nausea. It sounds like you have tried a lot of the tried and tru remedies so I'm sure you are frustrated. My doctor said that I could stop taking the prenatals for a short while since they made the nausea even worse so you may want to ask about that as well. Slushie's from Sonic seemed to stay down if I drank them super slow so you may want to give that a try. The doctor is probably more concerned with you staying hydrated than actually eating so be prepared for them to ask you how many ounces you drink in a day. Good luck......It will get better!!!

Morning sickness is normal...hormones going crazy and all, but exteme cases should be investigated. Try cutting out all dairy in your diet. i learned after the birth of my first he had a dairy allergy and my nursing counsler said extreme morning sickness through my entire pregnancy was my first clue! With my next 2 i avoided dairy and never had a bit. It is worth a try...

I know it's awful - I had the same type of morining sickness with both my pregnancies. Minty things helped cut the nausea a little - peppermint candies, Preggie Pops, mint tea. Unfortunately, to a large extent, it's only time that makes it better. The good thing is that you're experiencing the worst of it now, and it should be getting better from here. Honestly, keeping busy helped more than anything. It was the worst when I was sitting around doing nothing. If I was busy, the distraction helped the day pass. In the grand scheme of things, it's really a short period of misery, and completely worth it. Hang in there!

I had morning sickness but does not seem as bad as the other posts or yours....however I found that having an ice bucket with an ensure in it for me to down in the middle of the night before I felt hungry or ill, helped me greatly. I kept on those things most of the first trimester....it is very filling and only takes two seconds to down.....

talk to your DR. about perscribing Zofran. It has been my best friend through 3 pregnancies. It is a tablet that dissolves on your tounge and goes directly into the bloodstream. I will caution you though not to drink anything, even water, until it is completely dissolved. If you do the taste changes from a cotton candy like flavor to really bad.

You have a million responses and I didn't read them so sorry if this duplicates. Try the pregnancy pops. You can buy them at babies r us. I lived on them for months. I am sorry to say this but your post made me laugh. ;-0 I was so sick the first 3 months I was pregnant I swore I was never having sex again. Everytime I would brush my teeth I would throw up and everytime I would throw up I would pee on myself! It was VERY traumatic! The good news is it will subside soon -- and amazingly by the time your baby is born you will have forgotten all about it. Hang in there and congratulations!

I was the same way with my second pregnancy. What helped me the most were Sea-Bands. They are wristbands with pressure point balls on the inside. I got them at CVS. They are really dorky looking but when you feel that bad, who cares! I also consumed ginger everyday. Ginger tea doesn't taste too great but it helps you feel better. You can get it at the Vitamin Shoppe. Also, ginger altoids if you can find them. They are great for sudden onset of nausea. These are the things that got me through my first 2 trimesters. They didn't totally get rid of the nausea but made it bearable.

When I was pregnant I had terrible morning sickness also and the only thing that helped me was a prescription drug called Zofran. It's safe to take when you are pregnant and it works fast! Ask you OBGYN if he/she can prescribe you some of that. Hope this helps. Also, do you take your prenatal vitamins with food? If not, I would strongly suggest you do that because the vitamins can make you ill also. Good luck!

Bless your heart! I went through horrible "all day" sickness plus awful migraine type headaches for the first seven months with my oldest daughter. I also vomitted and had to be hospitalized at one point because of dehydration. Nothing, absolutely nothing helped and believe me I tried everything anyone told me about, prescribed, hinted at, whatever. One day in my 7th month the nausea and headaches started easing up and quickly became a bad memory once my beautiful daughter was born. With my second and third daughters I wasn't sick a day the entire pregnancy--felt fantastic (well, maybe a little tired) the entire time. I hope you find something that helps but don't freak out if nothing does...it will get better and is all worth it in the end. Also, just because you are sick this time it doesn't mean you will be next time if you choose to have another child(ren). Hang in there!!

I know you don't believe me now, but once the baby is born...
Anyway, I was sick as a dog both times. It did get so bad at one point that the Phenagrin suppository was prescribed. I found that dum dum lollipops worked well. It took a while to find the right flavor (first one-cherry, second-cream soda). I have a friend that swears by ginger!

Have you tried any prescription medications for nausea? Your OB should prescribe some for you. You need to nourish yourself and your baby. Hopefully it will be gone after your first trimester! I know of those who were very nauseated the entire 9 months! UGH! Best of luck!

I have been this sick with both of my pregnacies. There is really nothing you can do. It's miserable. I found that sour things and sour gum got rid of the bad taste in my mouth. Take your pre-natal vitamin at your best time of the day. Those always made me feel worse. You can try other Pre-natal vitamins to see if they make you feel less sick when you take them, but I never could tell a difference. My nausea always lasts till about 16 or 20 wks, but most people feel better at about 12 wks. I ata least always get my energy back at 12wks, which makes a huge difference. Hire a maid and by some frozen meals. Good luck and Congratualtions!

Good luck with this. My guess you are probably carrying a baby girl. When I was pregnant with my girls, I would also have extreme morning (all day) sickness. I found that sitting in front of a fan or window unit air conditioner and taking slow, deep breaths helped to ease the nausea. Talk with your doctor about using scopalamine patches or getting a prescription for phenergan. These are both safe to use during pregnancy. You don't have to wait until your prenatal visit to call and ask your doctor for help. Also, ginger supplements have been said to be effective for treating nausea. Oh, I'm so sorry you are going through this. One thing I said to myself over and over while I had morning sickness was "the sicker I am, the healthier the baby is." I know it seems strange. The good news is that this will pass.
Some things that worked for me: eating protien, not letting my stomach get empty (kind of keeping a few bites handy all the time) Ginger ale (the stuff made with real ginger), herbal teas, preggie pops (low sugar suckers you can get at baby stores) and real Ginger cookies. I also wore sea sickness bracelets that hit a pressure point. You will find foods that hit the spot, mine were chicken nuggets and chicken mixed with beans and rice. I loved fruit and fruit juice, too. I also ate in the car while moving and outside with fresh air. Keep at it, you'll find things that work for you! And then you'll be in your second trimester eating like there is no tomorrow!

I'm so sorry! I had the same thing until about 30 weeks. Preggie Pops helped, but only while they were in my mouth. Ginger candy helped some. Sipping gingerale helped. Peppermint made it worse. Eating crackers before getting up didn't work for me. When I did throw up, it didn't help like you would think it would.

My advice is absolutely don't let yourself get hungry. Stay away from cleaning chemicals. Ask your OB if you can try some different prenatal vitamins. Mine let me try a whole bunch of samples until I found one that was less bad. I took Zofran when I was completely desperate, but I tried to avoid drugs. Zofran helped, but it made me feel weird. The good news is that once you see that precious baby, you will barely remember all of this bad part. Best of luck!

There is a travel sickness medicine sold everywhere called Bonine (I think that is right - its been a while since I've used it). It helps a lot. Do not drink milk because it sooths for an instant but causes more acid to build up in your stomach. If you can eat a pickle the vinegar helps stop overproduction of acid in your stomach. It would be better if you could drink a tablespoon of pickle juice - but many people cannot imagine doing that. Prenatal vitamins have a lot of iron which sometimes cause stomach upset. It helps if you have a time-released vitamin so that all the iron doens't "hit you" at once. Keep in mind that this will pass and hope this helps. :)

I'm sorry you are going through this and please don't think I'm trying to be mean when I say unfortunately, you'll just have to suck it up unless you ask your doctor for some prescription medication to help you.

Starting with week 5 until exactly week 15, I was nauseated 24/7 and had my vomiting moments in the morning while brushing my teeth and in the evenings promptly after dinner.

Sipping cold lemonade during the day helped me tremendously, eating French bread during those nauseating weeks helped me tremendously, and Progresso Hearty Penne (chicken-broth) soup helped me tremendously. I have no idea why, but the combination of them seemed to help me a lot. At night, I'd suck on ice cubes before going to bed just to hydrate myself. I also always had ginger ale on hand at work which I drank at room temperature.

I wish you much luck, as I was in the same boat you were just a few short months ago :(

Homeopathy is a great way to soothe any discomfort that you are going thru during pregnancy since they are safe and effective for use during pregnancy unlike most medications and many herbs. Nux Vomica has worked for me. This is my second pregnancy (9 wks now)ave an ounce of nausea with the first, but I was laid up most of the Christmas vacation feeling just awful! Our family sees a homeopathic practitioner (also an MD)and this was his recommendation. It has been wonderful, especially since I had to go back to work! You can get these remedies at Whole Foods or at the Vitamin Shoppe. Hope this helps! God Bless!

I have been in your shoes twice. I know how badly you feel and am so sorry. I was just sick 24/7 with no vomiting either. I did learn one thing though-you must eat or it will get worse. I ate some dry cereal in the morning and just ate whatever I could throughout the day, mostly crackers and ginger ale(I now hate ginger ale!!!). At night it was so terrible, I went to bed around 5 and didn't get up again until morning. All I wanted to do was to sleep to get away from the nausea. Both my morning sicknesses(I called the all day sickness)started at exactly 8 weeks. With my first son they ended at the end of the first trimester, but with my second it lasted until about the 5th month. However, being sick 24/7 only lasted around 3-4 weeks with both. After that it was just sickness in the mornings and in the evenings. It just slowly wore away with each passing week. Thank God!!! I found some medicine at the drug store for nausea that is safe to take while pregnant. I can't remember the name, but I'm sure the pharmacist will know. It helps some. I tried Sea Bands, too. They worked while I was in the car. I have a tendency toward motion sickness. The look like sweat bands, but they have a small plastic point that fits against the inside of your wrist which is suppossed to help with nausea. They only worked for me in the car on longer trips. I've heard ginger helps, too. I think you can get ginger candy, but don't know where. I've heard of some women taking perscription drugs for bad sickness, but my doctor didn't want to give it unless I was losing weight which I wasn't. You will get through this and will no doubt enjoy the rest of your pregnancy. Just keep thinking about that precious baby and it will be worth everything you have to go through to get him/her here.
