So I just ordered the book healthy sleep habits, happy child. I have seen moms mention it on here a fair amount of times and i have an almost 2 month old that has very few good nights of sleeping. Im hoping to get her to be a better sleeper since she will be sharing a room with my almost 3 year old son shortly. I dont expect her to sleep through the night yet, just go to bed better and hopefully on her own without being rocked, get up to eat if need be and actually go back to bed. Im just wondering if you've read the book and what you thought of it. Did it really work good for you or not and how long did it take to get your baby sleeping better? Is there a section i should jump to to start sleep training her or do i just have to start at the begining. Thanks for your advice!

What can I do next?

It is organized by age, but even though he is about sleep training - he does mention in there that some kids aren't biologically ready to sleep through the night and need to eat, I can't remember the exact time frame, but I feel it is more for getting them on a good schedule and a good way to fall asleep.

I feel like any book like this that generalizes a topic to a one size fits all model is just a way to set parents up for dissappointment when their baby doesn't "go by the book." How many moms have you heard that get so upset when little Suzy isn't STTN at a certain age because Dr. So and So said she should? It just makes new moms feel like they are doing something wrong when their baby doesn't fit the mold. Listen to your baby and just enjoy them for who they are and not what a book tells you they ought to be.

Hi T.,

I was a Nanny for many years, and one of my parents told me it was a must read. Now I'm a parent coach and not only do I recommend the book, but it is my #1 gift for new parents.

What I like is that it is section so parents do not need to read the whole thing, just the sections they need. I had a lot of success with this book!! not only hands on while I was a Nanny, but as a coach helping sleep parents with awake kids = )

I want to tell you one piece advise about this book and all others you read. Take the good and throw away the bad. Make the book work to fit your parenting goals. Remember, these books are written for thousands/millions of families, so some things will work for you, some you won't want. It's ok to pick an choose.

Best of luck, enjoy the read.

I used it with great success. My sister used it too and will return to it for follow up.

LOVED the book. Definitely easily organized for you to check out the age and also the problems you might be having. It gives you options for a little crying, no crying, or cry it out. I like it because it addresses sleep needs/expectations and doesn't focus quite so much on how you do it.

I've never heard of the book, but I used a white noise machine with both of my children as infants, and I would suggest it to everyone I know. It will change your life.

I read the book with my first son and I think it helped a ton. I recommended it to several friends. The author will tell you that you can skip to the "instructional" section since you have already had your baby and don't have time to read the entire book. I learned a lot and credit my 2-year old's good sleeping habits to this book. Now I have a 3 month old and I am using the same principles.

I have read about 3 books on getting babies to sleep, and I have to say that I think this was the best. The most important takeaway I got from it was learn my son's tiredness cues and patterns and to get him down for sleep BEFORE he gets overtired. Another important thing I learned was that my son was probably ready to go to sleep for the night much earlier than I was thinking he was. With baby #1 we were starting his bedtime routine around 9, but with #2 we begin around 7:15 and he sleeps beautifully!

Just a thought--I noticed that you said that you ordered the book, but keep in mind that for parenting books your local library probably has it on the shelves and you can save yourself a TON of $. How I wish I would have used the library more with baby #1!
