I'm a stay at home mom and really need to look into getting insurance for myself. My SO and I are not married so I can not be on his insurance through work. Both him and my kids are under his insurance plan and I'm the only one without. I'm 25 so I can't imagine it being that expensive. Does anyone have any recommendations for an affordable plan with good coverage? I see the advertisements on the tv all the time, but some look bogus...

What can I do next?

I am a Health Insurance Broker and I am listed on mamapedia with many positive reviews. You can get insurance without any problem as long as there are no pre-existing conditions.

You do need to do your homework when it comes to your insurance, most of them are structured to leave you hanging when you need it the most and then it is too late.

Most of the products you see on TV are NOT insurance, they are indeminity products which opens you up to all kinds of financial exposure.

Below is a short list of carriers you should avoid, their policies have so many limits of coverage that you get left holding the bag financially. The devil is always in the details, read your policy, understand what your exposure is, because should you have a claim it is them to late.

Go to this website and review them and see how unhappy their customer are.

Hope this helps

Are you sure you cannot get health insurance with through your SO? Some employers and plans allow for domestic partner or other such non-married relationships.

Otherwise, a high deductible plan may be something to consider if you have the means to cover the deductible should something happen. If not, check out other basic plans offered by the health insurers in your area. I'm from Pennsylvania, so I don't know how different the plans are. But I believe our local Blue Cross/Blue Shield company does offer a basic plan that is affordable.

Good luck.

Are you sure that you can't get on his insurance? Just asking b/c years ago before my husband and I were married, we lived together and it was covered. Some insurance plans will cover common-law marriages.

I got very cheap Dental Insurance with a company called Medico. Costs me around $22 per month. I have used the dental insurance and it works as advertised. I used a broker - AL Boenker. ###-###-#### I didn't get health insurance through them, but, since they found me good cheap dental maybe they also can find good cheap medical.
Another idea is calling yourself common law married :) Without a marriage certificate you will just have to wait until open enrollment. That's usually in October/Novemebr.

My mom works for Humana (in another state, so no personal help). I needed insurance a few years ago when my husband lost his job and looked into their Humana One policies. Like all private insurance that is not through an employer, it is not as good as that employer coverage, but it is pretty decent. If you are healthy and have no pre-exisiting conditions, and it is just for yourself, it was pretty affordable. And as far as companies go, Humana is one of the better ones as far as not being dishonest. The plans are different in every state, so I would start by getting quotes from all the big companies, and yes, stay away from the tv ad companies. And just be sure to very carefully read your policy so you know what is really covered and what isn't.

(PS- BCBSTX = Blue Cross Blue Shield, in case you didn't know)

I have coverage for me and my children with Blue Cross/Blue Shield. We don't go to the doctor often and have money saved for an emergency, so their high deductible plan works for us. I was on unicare for awhile too, but they no longer do private insurance in Texas. I used ehealthinsurance.com in the beginning...they helped me compare different plans and refine my search a bit.
