Hi guys! I have a dog that was injured by a chain link kennel. He has a big open wound on his right hind flank. I took him to the emergency vet yesterday but they wanted $500 to suture it. I don't have that amount of money. However, now he is just walking around with a big gaping hole with muscle showing. Does anyone have any suggestions or know of anyone that could possibly help even if it is just suggestions on what I could do at home. I have been trying to keep clean by washing with hydrogen peroxide several times a day, I have also put neosporin in the actual hole and we did get antibiotics yesterday at the emergency vet. I don't want it to get infected and cause further issues. Please HELP!!!
Thank you for all the wonderful advice. Just to let everyone know, our dog was seen today and treated by a wonderful vet located off 820 and Meadowbrook. He was very kind and very affordable. It ended up costing us only $200 for him to do the sutures versus $420. He is tired but doing well.
Emergency clinics always are higher cost than regular vets.
Did they give you information on the vet credit card? A lot of high cost situations like that get approved, so the vet gets paid via the card, and then you make monthly payments to the card company. I can't remember the name of it, but most emergency clinics have info on it.
We had an issue similar to this about 2 weeks ago. Our dog got into a fight with another dog, and our dog lost, our dog got a HUGE chunk bit out of her leg. Yes gapping hole, could see the muscle and all, she limped for about a week. We did nothing. The only thing stitches would do would allow it to heal faster and prettier. I know this sounds mean but a mixture of cheyane pepper (spell?), yes the hot chili powder stuff, mixed with hydrogen peroxide to make a paste. Have someone hold the dog down, and someone pack the open wound with that paste you made. Then wrap it, if you can, with gause so she can not lick the paste. That keeps infection out and allows it to heal quicker.
Once she starts licking her wound herself, do nothing else, she will heal it on her own. Good luck.
by the way, we did this and our dog is perfectly fine and her HUGE hole is not a hole at all anymore.
I second a SPCA veterinary clinic. At the Dallas downtown location, they are even open on Saturdays (regrettably no longer on Sundays). As a matter of fact, I bring my little Shitsu there for shots, checkups, etc. He was also neutered there. I don't have another regular vet.
They do a great job and their prices are pretty low compared to those of a regular vet.
I'm not sure how much they would charge your for your dog's situation but they've always had the cheapest prices I've found.

I agree. Emergency clinics will quadruple the charges! We took our lhasa apso in once for a supposedly broken leg. They wanted $1500!! The next day, we took her to Cedar Hill Veterinary Clinic for not even $150. Her hip was out of joint (they adjusted it back in), and there was a hairline fracture, which required splinting and a light cast for 3 weeks.

Sorry to hear of your dog's injury.
You might keep him inside as he heals as flies will lay eggs that turn to maggots in the open flesh. Sounds bad but looks worse.
Please at least contact lazypawvet.com which is a husband and wife team that are the most compassionate people I have seen with pets. They even make house calls for not much more than an office visit. They let us bring in a stray cat that was injured and took care of it as I did not have the means to.
The website is informative and you can even email him for suggestions.
Don't know where you are located, but take your dog to Dr. Carver. He runs Humane Animal Hospital and he is fantastic and very caring. He wants to help people keep shots current on their pets...so he is very reasonable in pricing. I have been taking my dogs for the last yr...and have a couple of other friends who take their pets there too.
Example in pricing...he cleaned my dogs teeth - both - for less than what one vet would charge for one dog.

My experience has been that local vets are a fraction of the cost of the emergency vet clinics (i.e., the same situation for cat 1 was over $1000 at the Emergency clinic on a Sunday and only around $350 for the same thing for cat #2 at the local vet on a Monday). We live in Flower Mound and have used Dr. Kirby in Lewisville for 23 years and have always found him to be quite reasonable, especially if you explain the situation. He's located at the center at the SW corner of Old Orchard and Main in Lewisville ###-###-####). If that's not convenient, just call local vets and ask what they would charge for something like that - I think you're likely to find someone that will work with you. I have found that vets are far more conscientious than your average MD.
