Hi, Moms
I'm a little embarrassed, but my almost 5 year old still sleeps in his crib that we've made a "daybed". We also have twin mattresses on the floor, which he uses to dance, jump, practice gymnastics, etc.
His birthday is coming up soon. We want to get rid of the crib/daybed and get him some nice "Big Boy" furniture without spending a ton on money. (I'm sure many are in the same situation with the economy"). I was wanting to get him one of the beds where he sleeps on the top,and the bottom is kind of a play area, etc. But, I don't think that will work since he does jump on it (which I don't mind..he has mild sensory integration, and this helps him regulate himself). I still want the furniture to be fun, though, and something that will last him several years.
So, any advice would be GREATLY appreciated! (Note that we don't have a separate playroom, so he plays alot in his room, our office, or in a designated area in our den)

Thank you ladies for all of your wonderful responses. After talking it over with hubby and son, we decided to just keep the twin bed/boxspring on the floor. This way he can continue practicing gymnastics, jumping, etc without worrying about the bed breaking. We already had the bed in the room along with his "daycrib". We have 4 large custom pillows that one mom suggested putting along the wall during the day for a daybed look, then I'll use 2 of the pillows at night as sort of a headboard. I'm actually going to post another request on what I can put under the bed to make it easier to move to make/change the sheets, etc.
Then maybe when he is about 7, we'll switch to a loft bed.
(On a side note, I had mentioned to our son's gymnastics coach that he uses his bed all the time to practice, etc, and we were getting ready to change the bed. The coach suggested we just leave it on the floor so he can practice all he wants. Our son has actually moved up 3 levels in 3 months..his new coach is so excited with his progress and we've had several coaches/parents tell us our son has a natural ability in gymnastics. Please don't think I'm bragging..it's just that I'm very excited that my son has found something he really loves)

I would buy something used out of the paper or on craigslist.org you can find some great used things that look like new. Hope that helps you.

Do you have to have a formal bed? If you don't have a separate playroom and he enjoys jumping on the mattresses on the floor, how about getting him a sleeping bag that he can put in the closet during the day - kind of like the Japanese do with their futons.
His bedroom doesn't have to look like everyone elses! You could make/buy pillows that can be put along the back side of the bed along the wall to look like a "couch" during the day. Then he can get his sleeping bag from the closet at bedtime.

Try Big Lots furniture. They have some twin peices that aren't too expensive.
It may be worth your time to check out IKEA.
Check out craigslist. My cousin got her boys Cargo bunkbeds and they are durable, sturdy and take a beating from two energetic boys.

You might want to try Stacy Furiture's outlet in Lewisville. It"s not very far north of Grapevine Mills. Or Stacy in Grapevine. Also we've always liked Rooms to Go especially for kids stuff, just don't go on a Saturday when they're really pushy.

Buying brand new...we got ours used from a friend but it came originally from haverty's and the whole room was about $1000. We got a bed, 2 night stands, and a dresser. The bed is a captians bed with the drawers underneath. The middle part has a big cubby hole and my son currently uses it as a 'hide out' which is kinda cute and our daugher who is 6 but height wise the size of at least an 8 year old and she can still fold up in there. It's funny. So it's practical yet fun. And they make those tents I think at IKEA that go over twin bed matttesses so that could be fun for him and not take up any added space. And speaking of-IKEA has cute, cheap furniture for the kiddos as well...

Have you been to Ikea? They have a lot of great kids furniture and a play area for your son while you shop. There prices are great and the quality is good too. We love that store. Hope this helps!
Look on Craig's list you may find some used kids furniture that is in great condition. You could get him a mini trampoline for his room to jump on if he did have a bunk bed.

Hi There..We got both of our kids furniture at Ikea and we love it. Very sturdy. They have a lot to choose from too. While you are there check out the sitting swing that goes in the house. My son also has Sensory Processing Disorder and we have this hanging in his playroom..absolutely loves it!

Try Kid to Kid or Just Between Friends Consignment Sale-www.jbfsale.com These are consignment and you can find a variety of things there. They are reasonable on their prices. Try looking in the newspaper or Craig's List, or maybe someone will response back with something they have.
Buy a frame at a mattress store, and you can get good quality headboards at Target online for less than $200.
You need good quality if he is jumping on it,etc.
We bought a very nice set from Haverty's back when daughter was younger. This set was "too grown up" for her at the time but she is 14 now and has furniture that will get her through 18 yrs. If she wants it when she moves, she can have it.
We got her bed at Weirs. We were just browsing through one day and she saw it and loved it. It is a huge cherrywood bed. It was only $400 marked down from $1200 because it was too large to fit in most rooms. Fortunately, her room was perfect for it.
So, try Haverty's and Weir's for some quality furniture. Buy the best you can afford. When you go cheap, you get what you pay for and will probably be buying it again in a couple of years....in the end spending the same amount of money you would have if you bought well the first time.

We bought our son's furniture from Ikea. You have to assemble it and it's a pain to do so, but we've moved several states a few times and it has held up. I've seen what you are describing so I know they have it. The website does not have everything the stores do, so you'll have to drive to see for yourself. BUT they have a free play area so you can shop in peace without your kids. :)
Hi D! Four places come to mind to check out - IKEA in Frisco (you can check out their stuff online too), Stacy Furniture in Allen (we got ours there & it was pretty reasonable although not as much as IKEA would be), Rooms to Go, and maybe Haverty's (probably the most expensive of these 4 options)
