My eighteen month old daughter likes to stick her hands in the leg holes of her diaper, especially if there is poop in there. She'll play in it and get it everywhere. Her normal time for this is during naptime when she either wakes up and is playing in her crib before I know she is awake or before she falls asleep in the afternoon. I've cleaned her crib 3 times today because of this. How do I get her to stop. The only solution I have come up with is to put her in pants or capri pants but its so hot for that.

My mom tells me that I used to do the same thing when I was younger and my oldest daughter also did it. My mom told me when I did it she started to potty train me and I did the same for my daughter. This could be her way of saying mom I am ready to use the potty.

Here's what worked for us...take a pair of denim shorts (with button/zipper) and turn them backwards and put them on over her diaper. If they are snug enough, she won't be able to slip them off and won't be able to work the fastners from the back.

My son use to do that at night and in the morning his hand would be a prune and covered in poop. My mom put zippers on his PJ's so he couldn't unbutton them. I know it's Hot, That was my solution and eventually he stopped.
If it's only through her "leg holes,"then I guess this won't work, but if it is through her waist band as well, then this might work. Or, you could criss cross it through, underneath her legs for tighter "reinforcement."...
My daughter did the same thing at about that age too. In fact, the first time was at a relatives home, we were spending the weekend there. My niece and my daughter were playing in her room; before everyone else was awake. When we awoke, their hallway wall was totally "repainted" with her poop. From there on, it continued at home, mostly during naptime too.
The only thing, after a million other things, that we tried, and it worked, was "TAPE." We wrapped it several times around her diaper; and not "Scotch" tape or the like, it has to be "STRONG TAPE." When she is up from her nap, everything should still be in tact. When you are ready to change her, just cut carefully through the tape.
It doesn't look to pretty, but believe me, the tape is much prettier to look at than "a big poopy mess!"
Ah, I can so empathize. I have a little boy who enjoyed taking off his diaper and smearing things with it for the longest time!Though it is hot for pants, it is not too hot for shorts. So I would try those. Or, if you're feeling that any clothing is too restrictive (as my son does), try duct tape. I laughed nervously when a friend suggested it, BUT, it works! My son was so fascinated with the duct tape and trying to get it off his diaper that he forgot about playing with the diaper or taking it off. Good luck, and just think, school will start again before you know it (though this is a mixed blessing- I know because I'm a teacher too).
hi K., i have a ten yr old and a 3month old and my sister went through this very same thing. Our kids are smart enough to figure out how to play and get into things. hahaha. This is what we did, we just simply put the diaper on backwards. it still provides the same protection and they seem to take a little longer to figure out that the straps are in the back. Good luck. I am going through the same thing right now....my 20 month old won't stay in her clothes or diaper. Everytime I leave the room she gets naked! If there is anything in her diaper she plays in it. I have tried everything, and I do mean EVERYTHING! onesies, shorts, pants, and finally I resorted to duct tape and that seems to be working for now :-P I put the duct tape right over the tabs and she doesn't even try to take it off anymore and when she poops, she doesn't even touch it anymore. Yes, it is hot, but air conditioning works wonders. My suggestion, like others, is to put a pair of pants on her. If you think it's too hot, let her sleep with her shirt off, but put pants on her. You could also try waiting to put her down for a nap until AFTER she poops. I have a daughter the same age, who poops roughly around the same time each day, but she only poops ONCE a day. I don't know if you give her a lot of juice, but you could try giving her some foods that will firm up her stool - 3 times a day is a lot of pooping! Good luck!
