Help with Skin Irritation

Hey ladies, my son has a skin thing, which I found Tuesday morning. I need guidance with what it could be. The rash (for lack of a better word, not knowing what it is) is bumpy, and not red. It is just the color of his skin, until it gets wet, and then it will get red and splotchy. It is on his upper back, and both shoulders. It is also under his chin and cheeks. You can't really see it unless you are looking, but you can feel it.

My son does not seem to be bothered by it, as it does not itch, and he has had no temperature. I have not changed detergents, soaps, lotions, etc. I gave him bananas for the first Sat., so I would think if that bothered him that it would have appeared immediately, and not three days later. I have called Ask-a-nurse, and they did not seem too concerned about it since my son is not bothered by it. They did say something about waiting 3 days, to see if it is viral...My doctor's office did not make a determination to me over the phone, so I am in limbo. Does anyone know what this could be? Thanks!

What can I do next?

My two kids had a rash similar to this. I took one of them to the dr. and he said it's like a sister to fifths disease. Nothing to worry about and should go away in 5-7 days. And it did go away in that amount of time. Didn't bother my kids. They were a little fussy, but no fever or anything like that before the rash started. Dr. said to give them Tylenol or Motrin if needed. It was a weird rash, because sometimes it would appear to come and go. Be brighter on some days than others. My daughters school wasn't concerned with it either and she went to school on. Hope this helps.

Our son has something similar and his dr. said his is eczema. It shows up when he is hot - bath water too warm, too many covers at night, wearing too many layers, etc. We use Aquaphor every night after his shower and if he has a patch that doesn't respond to that, his dr. prescribed some stronger steroid cream as regular hydrocortisone didn't work on him. He only seems to need the stronger cream if we forget to use the Aquaphor after his shower for a few days.

My first thought is that it could be eczema... Don't know if I spelled that right! Eczema is basically just really dry skin. My son had it and what you describe is almost to the T what he had. I used a hydrocortizone cream on him which helped GREATLY... but you need to use it sparingly since it has steroids in it. My dr said this was fine in small amounts. Also, Aveeno makes a great lotion for babies with eczema, which worked good too. He grew out of it and hasn't had it in a long time. Sometimes gets it in splotches in the winter... Good luck, S.

I think my son has the same thing, I can't remember the name of it. It is some sort of psoriasis or dermatitis that he has. My routine in keeping it clear consists of lathering him down in vaseline daily after his evening bath, and keeping a cool mist humidifier going in his room. It has helped greatly. I have to do this every night, or else he will break out. I'm not sure that this is exactly what your child has, but vaseline with combination of the cool mist humidifier works good for dry skin.

Hi B.,
My 2 year old daughter just had the same thing and her's lasted several weeks, fine during the day but during a bath and after it was red and really noticable. It became itchy so I took her to a dermotolist and she said that the baby soap that I was still using is a drying soap so it takes all the moisture out of her skin she reccomended I stop using that and use dove or a soap that is mosturizing. And use aveeno lotion. She also said it could just be a skin bactiria, she gave us a pricription and within a week it was gone. Good luck and if you need more info or just want to talk I'm here.

I have had this irratioon going on for 3 weeks now last week I made an appt to see my family dr but also called my obs office and they told me it could be viral i'm going on 6 weeks postpartum so unsure if it was just hormonal changes anyway seen my dr Tuesday and he was unclear to what it is and has ordeded lab work however whiich there I took a pee test to see if I have a UTI in which I have a bladder infection and he did mention that it could cause the rash as well but to be safe he ordered tests which are for woman only.I haven't switched anything or came into contact with anyting that I know of.But it seems that it could be allergies coming out onto the skin I have them in my nasal passages already. But he told me that I could take Claritin once a day to see if it'll clear up and calm my skin.My rash is under my cheeks ear to ear down to my breasts wrist and upper arms and back of my shoulders it starts out tingly then itches scratch it and is like hundereds of bumps but can't be seen unless someone is looking closely at me and you cna feel every one of them and then they disapper this goes on all day long.I would take him in to see the dr just to be safe it could be irration from others or articles of clothing or the change in the weather. Also keep him mosturized with lotion or creams to help the dryness and itching

Hi B.,

All I can say is that both my daughters had different kind of rashes an it usually go away on it's own. If they don't fell good or if fever occurs then doctor is needed, also if it is reddish and it sreads to more parts of body. Once it was scarlatina (strep with rash) it was bad but she also had high fever and disconfort bady! We ended up with antibiotics.
Just the rash doesn't seem unusual to me, monitor it so it doesn't get worse and check for fever or redness. If none, I woudn't worry. It will probabloy go away soon. It can be anything, from allergy reaction to skin irritation for any reason, at 7 month old their skin is very sensitive.
I use Renew lotion from Melaleuca for any rash and it helps a lot. You can try any safe moisturizer for babies if you don't have Renew.
Hope it goes away, good luck!

A virus could present this way in a child. Also allergies can take as long as 2-3 days to manifest into symptoms. I would not feed anymore bananas and if the symptoms go away then in a week or two introduce bananas again and see if your baby develops symptoms again. If so there is a way to eliminate your babies allergies painlessly and non-invasive. This is new technology that dr's are getting amazing results with.
