High Cholesterol While Pregnant

I am expecting my second baby and recently had my annual physical and was told my cholesterol was on the high range of normal , I found this to be very surprising since it does not run in my family and I maintain a healthy lifestyle. I am wondering if anyone else has had this occur while pregnant. I was assured that there was no risk to my baby but just wondering if this has happened to anyone else and if the levels returned to more of a safe range after pregnancy?

What can I do next?

I do agree that cholesterol levels can be higher during pregnancy, but please do not assume that they will go back to normal after the baby is born. My cholesterol was so high during pregnancy and years after my son was born that I am still on meds 5 yrs later. I wouldn't worry about it now, and obviously you can't take meds for it, but please get it rechecked after you give birth.

I agree that it is a normal physiological response to pregnancy, it will return to normal after pregnancy without any intervention. No need for concern, but maintaining that healthy lifestyle is of course as important as ever. Keep up the good work!

I'm surprised anyone checked your cholesterol while pregnant. It's SUPPOSED to be high. Cholesterol is an important building block of the fetus. Statins (cholesterol lowering drugs) are category X and should never be taken in pregnancy. Good luck with your new little one!

My cholesterol has always been excellent, except for while I was pregnant. It went REALLY high (for me) during my pregnancy. I haven't had it rechecked yet because I'm breastfeeding and the hormones are probably still affecting my cholesterol levels. My OB/GYN said that cholesterol levels tend to be elevated during pregnancy and will return to baseline afterwards.

Happened to me. I was getting a new Life Insurance policy and I was pregnant. My weight was way off (obviously) and my cholesterol was high. I can't remember if I retested after I delivered or if they just ignored the results. But, it went back to normal after the baby was born.

Congrats on #2!
