My son is 15 months old he was admitted to Childrens for severe dehydration and vomiting. He was not digesting his food it was like he would eat all day and it would just sit there and then around 5 he would throw everything up and then continue to throw everything up he ate after that. The third day at childrens they got him to finally keep stuff down and all the x rays and upper GI looked normal which stumped the doctors. I got him home friday night and saturday morning he wakes up with a 104 fever i couldn't get it to break i gave him a bath etc finally got it to break around 6 at night then around 830 it was back up to 104 then i got it to break again i put him to bed and around 330 am he woke up whimpering i went in there he was burning up i took it and it was 105 so i gave him some more motrin and it broke and he slept till about 830am and woke up with a 103 fever i gave him some tylenol and around noon he was laying on my chest and i noticed he was burning up again but this time it was like the heat was radiating off of him and he couldn't keep his eyes open and he was breathing really heavy so i took his temp and it said 107.4 and i checked it 4 times just to make sure. so of course i freaked out and took him to the emergency room and they ran an iv and gave him fluids and a triple dose of motrin and the fever broke but then i brought him home and not more than two hours later his fever was back up to 104 and so i called and the dr said alternate between tylenol and motrin and double the doses so i did that and he went to sleep but now i'm just worried cuz this is the second day in a row that he has had a high fever and it spiked to 107 that can't be normal. please any advice would be soooooooo appreciated i'm a first time mom and i'm single so i have no clue what im doing.

What can I do next?

Wow, that is scary! If it got up to 104 and the motrin or tylenol would not do anything, I would take him in, Maybe a new doctor, there is defintely something wrong. 107 degree fever is very dangerous. If his breathing is wheezy or not normal, I would take him in.. IF alternating the Motrin and tylenol does not work, I would keep taking him to the doctor, I hope he is feeling better soon... Thats a scary fever.....

I agree that you need to get him in to a new doc right away!

By giving him double and triple doses of medicine is just pushing the symptons away for a short time. They will NOT fix what the underlying problem is.

They should not have sent him home with this happening continuously! And if his fever keeps spiking like this he could start having siezures. They need to run some more tests until they get to the bottom of this.

I am surprised they are letting him go home so quickly if he had 107 degree temp when he arrived. Have they run blood tests, etc.? What are they suggesting you do at home? Anything?

Did they check his lungs? My 6 yr old has been running high fever like that and when we went to the doctor they did a chest xray and discovered Pneumonia. She is now on her 3rd of antibiotics and temp is almost normal (99.2). What a relief after spikes of 103 and 104!

DEMAND to know what is wrong. Go to a different place. Make them run blood test. My dd almost died because the dr's blew off her throwing up. She ended up spending 4 days in the hospital because of a dr's lazy attitude. Fight for them to do test. Go to a different hospital. You are your child's best advocate.

You poor thing! It sounds to me like you're doing the right thing and that is to keep a close eye on your little one and take him to see a doctor when your instincts tell you to. Maybe keeping a cool cloth on his head will help keep the fever from spiking up that high again in addition to the medications. Sorry I don't have a great advice for you, but it sounds like you are doing fine on your instincts. :) good luck, I know that must be so scary for you both.

Get your child to a different emergency room! My daughter had the fever problem at 9 mo. they did a blood test and she had pneumocacous. (infection of the blood and bad spelling, sorry) precurser to menangitis. Throwing up is from the fever. Don't mean to scare you but you never know

Wow - I've never heard of a 107 degree temp! I'm surprised the hospital would let you take him home without getting to the bottom of what's going on. If the fever happens again, take him to another ER and stay there until they can figure it out.

When my 22 month old (now 5 1/2 yrs old) had a 104 fever, vomiting and couldn't walk or bend her arms or legs, we took her to the ER at Medical City Dallas and they gave her Motrin and an IV and then admitted her to the hospital where they quarantined us for four days while they ran all sorts of tests. They ruled out lots of stuff and finally decided it might be juvenile arthritis (which was later diagnosed though now we're at Children's looking at a possible GI illness instead). This is all to say that I'm really surprised the ER would let you just leave like that without saying what your son might have, and after the fever spiked to 107, they should be monitoring him.

I hope he's doing better now, but if not, seek out another ER and get to the bottom of it!! Good luck. I hope you can get answers and get your little guy feeling better soon.

Dear Allysia H,
Sorry about your rough moments....been there and it isn't fun. My boys are 12 and 7 now so it's a little different now.
I believe you are doing a perfect job. Sounds like the decisions you are making are all the right ones. I have used my mother's ways when I come across fevers....and that is a bowl of ice water with lots of ice cubes. dunk a washcloth in the bowl, ring it out, but not all the way., then place it on his forehead. Because he is so hot, you will have to rotate the cloth, finding the coldest part of the towel as you are unfolding, etc. dip it in the bowl again and again for at least 10 mins at a time. I also have 7up handy and chicken soup as well, (any kind). saltine crackers are perfect compliment to the soup(your son might like animal-shaped crackers also) this will also help if he is having trouble keeping any food in his stomach. If the fever keeps returning, tylenol fever reducer is one of my favorites. sounds like you use this already.
that's all! let me know if this works for you....i hope he gets better soon ;-)

So sorry to hear your son is sick. Sounds like you are doing a wonderful job as a mom! If it is not too far for you to go, you might want to take your son to the pediatric after hours urgent care center at preston & forest in North Dallas. They are absolutely wonderful and I am aware of a few parents who have taken their kids there and gotten wonderful results after not getting answers from their own pediatricians. Here is a link to their web page http://www.pediafterhours.com/locations. Keeping you and your son in my thoughts and prayers. Hang in there.

I agree with the other suggestions, get your child to a different hospital ASAP! Cook's Children Hospital is definitely an alternative but if you can't get to Fort Worth, get to ANY hospital! A fever as high as 104 can start to cook the brain and cause brain damage. At the 107 mark, it IS cooking the brain, I recommend packing ice around his head and calling an ambulance. If you have any medical papers/records (even discharge papers) bring that with you to the other hospital.
INSIST that they admit your child and run full tests. Also tell the medical staff (to the best of your memory) what has happened in both what started this , the incident with Children's hospital, and while you've been home. All information you give them are major clues as to whats happening so they can properly diagnose and treat your child.
I hope that as you read this sentence you are picking up the phone and either calling 911 or preparing to go to a hospital! Please do not wait, even if your child has no fever right now.

This EXACT thing happened to my son when he was about 9 months old. For one week his fever was at 104+. He wouldn't keep anything down. By the fifth day or so (and fourth or fifth doctor's visit), I insisted my doctor call in a referal at Children's Doctor's Referal Office. She did and when I went I basically insisted they admit him and figure out what was wrong. At first they thought he might have had meningitis, and they did a spinal tap on him. (He didn't.) They did the GI's on him and found nothing. They got him on an IV and admitted us. After 4 days of test without any answers, he finally got better. By that fourth day, they released us, but they never found out what it was. Whatever the case, I think the IV helped him get better while his body fought whatever was going on...

I am also surprised about this ER, do not come back there, they shouldnt let you go home without run all the possible tests to figure it out what was happening . Dont hesitate and go to another hospital.
I just have a problem with my 2 year old girl ( without fever ), but each time that i gave her something to eat if she fell asleep she woke up vomiting . So, we took her to an Er and they discovered that she had mild asthma.
You should know that 104 is fever and 107 is extremely dangerous and fever means infection. Do you have a pediatrician?, even if the fever has gone you better take your child to a doctor as soon as you can , take all the prescriptions with you and let the doctor know all what it happened

I want to start off by saying you have been a wonderful caring mommy to this little boy, you have done exactly what we have to do when something like this happens to our children. Your frustration, being scared and not knowing what to do next is totally understandable! Here is what I know you need to do....

All that needs to be dealt with RIGHT at this moment is getting your baby boy back up to the hospital. Worry about changing pedi's after this has past or if you can while he is in the hospital. The temp he is running is NOT normal, VERY DANGEROUS & needs attention yet again. I have skimmed 106 temp myself and I felt like I was oblivious, 106 is the blood boiling point but for children it might be slightly higher than that, regardless he is running on dangerous temps. If his temp is 104 and higher and it keeps coming back consistently then he needs to be back in the hospital. Tell them the daily chart of his temp. For example at 4am he was running 104 so I gave him motin and then it shot up to 107 and I gave tylenol and the temp won't barley budge. Tell them as a mother you do NOT want him released until they find the cause of his temperture! Him running this high of temp for a long time period can be very risky and the hospital needs to find what is causing it. Our bodies let us know that there is something wrong when we run temp. It could be infections, viruses or even worse things that cause it. Get him there asap. If this happens again with this hospital and they release him and again he comes home with very high temp like that then you might want to try another great hospital. I know it specificly for children but if they discharge him without or the same diagnoses and he comes home with a repeated temp then might have to take him elsewhere. I will keep you two in my prayers and hope this aweful situation comes to an end and that you will find out the cause. You are doing great and never doubt yourself for a moment that your not. Keep us posted!

Take that baby to Medical City Childrens over off forest and 75 ASAP. We have had similar issues at Children's medical downtown. My daughter was admitted and when they couldnt find a problem with the first tests they ran they just released her instead of looking into it furthur. The doctors and nurses at Medical City are much better. If his fever is that high for that long there is some underlying problem that needs to be found. A temp as high as 107 is doing damage to his body we were not made to be that hot. Take him now and demand an answer.

Talk to your pediatrician and get your little one admitted. There is some sort of infection roaming his body and you need to get it taken care of. My daughter would have the same thing - spiking fever off and on...and then nothing...then a spiking fever...turned out she had asymptomic ear infections.

The main worry with the high fever is dehydration. Until they find the source of the infection, he needs to be getting his fluids. If Children's isn't helping, go to another hospital.

I agree that you need to go back to the hospital, and keep calling your pediatrician and give them the full story of everything that has happened - don't assume whoever you talk to (the nurse or dr on call) has any idea about your child's history!! They just happen to be holding the pager that night and only know whatever you tell them right then, and often they don't put any record of your call into your child's file, so your regular doctor doesn't know what is going on. The same with E.R. docs - they are there to handle the immediate emergency but don't know anything about your child's past history and how long this has been going on, what tests have already been run, etc. Keep insisting that you've already tried going home and the fever keeps coming back, keep calling your physician, insist on a return call from the dr, etc., etc. Trust your instinct - 107 fever that keeps coming back isn't normal!! Good luck!

They did an upper GI... but this was to check for why he threw up.

They should test for other things... not just "why" he threw up... infections etc. His fever is very high... I can't believe the ER didn't run any tests.

The motrin and Tylenol will just keep his fever at bay.... but it does not "cure" whatever is the source of his fever. Motrin and Tylenol will just lower his temp. Which he needed because his fever was so high.

I would, tell your Doctor to diagnose him... and I would think, they need to know the cause of what is causing his high & recurring fevers.

When his fever gets high again... one way to lower it, without giving him double/triple of Motrin and Tylenol, is to put him in a tepid bath... or, put ice packs under his armpits and knees, and on his forehead and have him drink cool fluids. Not "cold", just cool.

All the best,
Susan
