Hello parents and home daycare providers in my area! The last couple months I've received several phone calls in regards to my home daycare. But....some say they cannot afford my rates. I understand that everyone needs to stick to a budget, but I consider childcare 1 of the most important decisions that they make for their children. I love children! and my job! I went to school for Early Childhood Growth and Development, I was a nanny for 4 years, I have been married for almost 16 years and have 4 children of my own. I have been doing home daycare out of my home since my oldest was 3 months old, that was 15 years ago! I have 2 adults that work with me, I complete ongoing education for my licensing requirements, CPR certified infant, toddler, and adult. I work M-F 6:45-5:45. The whole lower level of my home in fully devoted only to the daycare, 1500 sq. ft. with half carpet/tile and heated floors. We have a huge fenced yard, we take children on fields trips in the passenger van. We have dance parties, do projects, exercise, bake, read, do puzzles......my list goes on and on..... can you please give me some prices that you pay OR providers in this area...What do you charge for full-time/part-time? Are you paying more or less for childcare in the last few years with the economy? Thanks so much!

What can I do next?

Why don't you make some calls and do some visits in the area to see
what your competition charges and see what facilities they are offering?
You could also create a comparison chart to feature what your facility offers and what they should be looking for when they shop for a daycare.
Such as: extra staff, DCFS license, CPR certification, etc.
I used to be a teacher in a not for profit, Christian daycare and I went to vist local facilities nearby as a prospective parent. I was aghast at what I saw being done in local daycares. It is an eye opening experience.

I currently do not pay for childcare as I am a SAHM, but when I did pay for an at home day care service, my son was 2 (younger more costly) and the pricing was 103/wk plus 75 annual supply/reg fee with 2wks paid notice of cancellation. I could not imagine, at 5 paying more than that/wk. Hrs for my usage were 830-615.

I live in lombard and had a lady that sounds very similiar to your set up. I paid $250 a week. She was open 7-5:30. My son is now 7 and will go back over the summer. I am not even going to ask for lower cost for a 7 year old...because I feel that I got a bargain all those early years when she took such good care of my sweetie.

I work part time and I pay $50/day per child - that sounds consistent with what the other posts have said. For extended hours (before 7 and after 6), she charges $60/day. My care provider sounds similar to you - well done!

Hi K.,
I can't speak directly as to whether your rates are too high or not, but suggest you contact the Child Care Resource & Referral Agency in your area; they might have advice for you on that subject and also be able to provide you with other assistance. Perhaps there is also a family day care association in your neck of the woods as well?
I do have a home-based information service, with a focus on schools and child care. I maintain a website, www.metroprofiles.com, the URL for the main Chicago page is www.metroprofiles.com/ChicagoWelcome.html. Please feel free to check out the site, and if you would like to contact me privately, my email address is ____@____.com and my phone # is ###-###-####. Good luck to you.

When my son was in a daycare in Hoffman Estates we paid $250 when he was under two. Once he was two it was $225. At three it would have gone down to $195 however we moved to another community at that time. My daughter - in a daycare in Crystal lake - is 2 and we pay $240 per week and when she turns 3 it will be $225. Both of these places are recognizable chain daycares.

Here's my question - do you have other individuals there with you in the event you are sick? If you are sick or a family emergency happens who's there to watch the kids? If it's just you and no one can back you up I feel your prices should be slightly lower due to this as parents would have to take off work if you have to be away or simply cannot watch the children.

For the above reason this is why I feel daycare centers can charge a little more - due to the convenience of someone always being there to watch the children.
