Hospital Misdiagnosed Me!!

Well a little over a month ago i was woken with sharp pain just below my rib cage (in the center). So while it hurt i shrugged it off for all day until i just couldn't stand it and went to the ER. On the way to the ER i called my PCP, told them my symptoms, and they thought i could have any of these: Ectopic pregnancy, gallbladder problems, or stomach ulcers. So when i signed into the ER i told them the above and they did a blood and urine test, and a super detailed ultrasound. After 7hrs of all this they came to the conclusions that i was NOT PREGNANT that my tests had come back all negative, and that the diagnosis was Gallbladder Sludge and Stomach ulcers. So with that they gave me some meds and sent me on my way and told me to go see a surgeon to see what needed to be done about the Gallbladder Sludge. So i did just that. The surgeon confirmed the Sludge and scheduled a date to REMOVE the gallbladder saying it was Gallbladder Disease. So i've had to post pone 1 surgery already because of the cost (my 30% of insurance to pay). Since that i have told my PCP the info, had him look over ALL my hospital records. Today, now with it being over a month, my PCP told me that the hospital messed up on something and he wanted to retest me on my blood work. He said that my urine test for the pregnancy came back Neg, which is just what the hospital had said....but then he said that my Blood Test came back "ODD"...my HCG levels were at +4. He said he thought i might be pregnant. I have an IUD and have had it since May 2007. I have had a period every month since having it put in, but since this past December i have not had one. But i didn't panic because i was told that my body may stop having the period all together because of the IUD. Now since that i have freaked! So my PCP did another blood test today and i should know something hopefully tomorrow or the next day, but i need to know what all this could be affecting internally! I'm freaking out! I hope someone can help me with this "mass confusion"!!! I am almost 29yrs old, mom of 2 and only weigh 123. No weight gain or anything....i'm so lost!

I went to the er several months ago with the same thing. The Docotor said it was my gallbladder. I went to my doctor who sent me to another doctor and they decided that I need sugery. I was very scared, and a friend told me to try this before I had sugery:
An alternative procedure to Step 3 above combines gallbladder flush with liver flush. It uses apple juice fasting, as described below (based on Herbally Yours, by Penny C. Royal, Sound Nutrition, Utah, 1982). I would like to caution that people with cancer, candida yeast infection, diabetes, hypoglycemia or stomach ulcer should not use this apple juice fasting procedure because of the high sugar content in the apple juice.

Day 1:

Take 2 cups of 8 oz organic apple juice or apple cider every 2 hours from 8 am to 8 pm. Altogether 14 cups will have been taken during this period. Do not take any other food or drinks except plain water.

Please note that the apple juice should not be taken cold from the refrigerator. It should be kept at room temperature or mixed with about 10% hot water before use because cold drinks chill the liver. For people with lots of stagnant bile, the collapsed stagnant bile may rush out after drinking apple juice. It may feel like having diarrhea but is actually stagnant bile (brownish yellow colour).

Day 2:

Repeat Day 1
At 8:30 pm, take ½-cup (4 oz) of olive oil (extra virgin cold pressed) mixed with ½-cup of lemon juice (squeezed from 3 lemons) or with ¾-cup of freshly-squeezed grapefruit juice.
Go immediately to bed and sleep on your right side. If there is a large amount of stones, nausea may be felt after drinking olive oil but this feeling will largely disappear on the third day after taking some food.
Day 3:

Upon rising in the morning, take 1 litre (approximately 4 cups) of warm distilled or filtered water containing two level teaspoons of un-iodized sea salt. Alternatively the addition of juice from half a lemon may be used in place of the sea salt. Wait for at least half an hour before eating.
Take vegetable broth and softly cooked vegetables only. The stones should be passed in the stool any time between midnight of Day 2 and morning of Day 4.
Note: The purpose of drinking apple juice is mainly for the malic acid in apple juice. Malic acid is a good solvent for stagnant bile in the liver. Apple juice taken during fasting would dissolve and push out stagnant bile in the liver. For someone with a yeast infection or diabetes, apple juice can be replaced by malic acid in capsule or powder form. The fasting procedure is the same except that apple juice is replaced by 1000 - 2000 mg of malic acid taken with 2 cups of warm water.

It worked wonders for me. I went back to the docotor who did an ultra sound and most of my sludge and galstones where gone. Its worth a try, the apple juice makes you full so you arent hungry and its so much better than sugery!

Feel free to email me if you have any questions!

I know it's tough to think something is wrong and not knowing is the worst part. Just try to take a deep breath and realize that your doctor is just being thorough. I don't know much about HCG levels or anything else related specifically to your post, but panicking won't help and your girls will pick up on that too and start to worry (maybe needlessly). I will pray for your peace and health and be sure to let us know what happened when you get your results. Blessings!

T., I worked as an RN full time for 20 yrs but am SAHM now, with older boys. Until you verify you are not pregnant, you can try to manage some of your gall bladder symptoms. I do not know what meds they gave you but I found great relief in diet management for years (10+) before I finally had to have a laparoscopic cholecystectomy which was outpatient. Back when I got out of nursing school, a chole was a one week stay, barring any complications! Anyway, stay away from cheese, especially "stretchy" cheese like mozzarella, provolone, american. When hot, they stretch and the body (gall bladder) has a much more difficult time breaking down this fat than other fats we eat. A low fat diet is great but I did not eliminate anything but the stretchy cheese...my gastroenterologist (in La.) told me about this. Some people have trouble with spicy food; I had trouble with acidic food i.e. tomato products. Just listen to your body. "Sludge" might be manageable for awhile. Good luck and if you ARE pregnant, hope it is great news for you!

About me: In addition to the above info, I am 53, have boys 11,13, and 14. We stay busy with soccer and football, band and academics. I need to lose alot of weight, and stick with a low impact exercise routine and swimming once pools open due to arthritis and fibromyalgia...I have lousy self-discipline...I need some friends to enjoy who might be able to help get my bum in gear! We moved here last summer and I still really don't know anyone very well. But with time...

T.,

This is almost identical to what happened to me several years ago. I did have an ectopic pregnancy. Don't hesitate to contact me off board and I will share more about what I endured. Try not to worry! I know that is easier said than done.

I'm so sorry you're going through all this. I pray God's peace over you.

I'm not educated in the medical field and I tend to do things naturally. Keep that in mind while I share my experiences. A couple of years ago I had an "episode" of sharp pain, went to the doctor for upper respiratory stuff I had and he was more interested in the pain. He sent me for an immediate ultrasound and they found I have polyps in my gall bladder. I was sent to a surgeon and was surprised to learn that the only medical remedy for gall bladder disease is to remove it. When I read up on things I saw that some people continued to have symptoms after removal. Also that it's hard to diagnose, more like an educated guess when they think you need your gall bladder removed. I did try a simple natural cleanse which allowed me to eliminate a lot of muck. I believe I had a similar pain one more time but I did not get my gall bladder removed and am symptom free. I also read that when one is very sick (as I was with the upper respiratory stuff) your gall bladder can "malfunction" just one time. I can't remember now, but perhaps because the body is weakened.

Several months ago I was diagnosed with liver problems and it all seems to be connected. After that diagnosis I started eating better and exercising and I now I'm getting well from the inside out.

I'm not so sure you should try anything until you find out if you're pregnant. Perhaps your financial situation spared you an unneccessary surgery though. There are always blessings in the midst of the worst of times. May the Lord calm your mind with truth and comfort your spirit with His love.

T., I don't know anything about this but it certainly sounds potentially dangerous. It also sounds a bit unlikely -- your PCP sounds like s/he's doing the right thing, following up about a possibility of a rare and improbable but dangerous situation that hasn't been 100% eliminated as a possibility, but that doesn't mean the original diagnosis was definitely wrong, yet. Please, if you would, write back to the list and let us know -- tubal pregnancies resulting from IUDs seem to be rare, but they are one really bad thing that can happen, and I'm sure that many of us on the list would like to know how you are and whether that is what is happening.

An Hcg level of 4 is not indicative of pregnancy, unless you were only a few hours pregnant. By the time you are a month pregnant, your levels are in the thousands. Sometimes, ovarian cysts can cause a slight increase in hcg levels. If it were me, I would see an OB/Gyn.
