How Can I Increase Our Immunity...We're Always Sick!

Hi moms, I'm looking for advice on ways to increase my family's immunity. All 4 of us are sick with our 2nd colds of the season...and it's only October! Last year we were all sick - either individually or together - from October through March with ear infections, sinus infections, bronchitis, the flu, etc. We were all miserable and I don't want to follow the same path this year. We've all had (or will be getting soon) our flu shots. We eat a pretty well balanced diet, except I wish my kids would eat more vegetables (who doesn't?). We do a good job with handwashing and frequently use hand sanitizers when out & about. I roamed the natural supplements aisles at Whole Foods the other day and was completely overwhelmed with all of the choices out there for vitamins, minerals, etc. How do you keep your families healthy during the cold & flu season? Thanks!

What can I do next?

I recommend Vit A, C, E Zinc and selenium. You can find a good immune formula at fruitful yield, just look for those to be in it. When feeling colds coming on, it is okay to take up to a full gram of Vit C as an adult and 1/2 that for child. Echinacea is also very good. Regular chiropractic adjustments also help tremendously with keeping the immune system working at its best. The reason is because the adjustments clear out any interference in the nervous system which actually boosts the functioning of the immune system and decreases your susceptibility to all the pescky colds, sinus and ear infections out there. I am a chiropractor in Villa Park. If you would like more info let me know. If you need help finding a chiro closer to you again let me know and I will help.

I am a believer in hand sanitizer (Purell type stuff) and anti-viral Kleenex. I also like to use Bleach water (put it in a spray bottle, a splash of bleach to a bottle of water). I bleach everything in the house - the toys, the walls, the lightswitches and door knobs, the floors even. Between these 3 things we rarely get more than a cold around here. And I do daycare so lots of germs coming and going.

Try getting everyone outside for 15 minutes every day for fresh air and open the windows in your bedrooms for a few minutes every day (no matter how cold.) Also, keep your house at 68 degrees or lower.

There are a ton of cold like germs that cannot survive in 68 degree temps. (Plus, you'll save on your heating bill!) At night, if you can drop it a little lower, even better.

Window opening airs things out. Think about it, you're inside your house with the heater running - windows all shut up and your basically recirculating the same germs over and over again. Opening the windows helps break that cycle and airs out the rooms.

We did this last year and found that we were sick FAR less than the previous year.

Last year my husband & I took Emergen-C daily- sold at all stores. We found Trader Joe's to be cheapest. It worked but this year I am trying more vitamins, for the kids and I we all take Shaklee, including C. They also have something called defend & resist, as soon as you get sick it's supposed to knock it out in less time. We havn't needed it yet. If interested look on their website. So far I have been a walking testimonial for almost everything they sell. (I do no sell- just use the stuff :-)) They have a ton of stuff to build immunity etc. Good luck!

Oh how I feel your pain. I am on baby #4. About 3 years ago I was going through the same thing. I had one is school who ate a great diet didn't get sick that often but when he did it was a big one - flu 2X in one year. Who passed it to me and my 10 month old. My middle son is a PICKY eater no fruits and vegtables other than a bannana-or a few carrots. My youngest was diagnosed at 4 months with food allergies. My middle would get sick everytime I would take him to church or walmart- basicly where ever and it would linger for almost 2 weeks and would spread to the rest of the family. My Mom had told me about JUICE PLUS for years....I thought it was a vitamin and was not intrested that I thought I had that base covered! I do cook mostly at home to and serve fruits and vegtables....well out of pure exahustian i decided to give it a try....I was SURPRISED the change I saw in my kids health...It dawned on my a month or so later that no one was sick!!! WOW....my little one with the food allergies Eczema cleared all up and his sensitivities went way down almost gone!!!! This is not a vitamin- it's a whole food supplement they are simply fruits and vegtables that are juiced and go through drying process. They come in gummies for kids and capsuls for adults. Something to look into. I won't go a day with out taking juice plus....You can see the reasearch and info at www.TricociJuicePlus.com Good Luck!!!!!! The secret is a healthy immune system..we can only get that through diet! this gives us what we should eat but don't! D.
