How Often Should Hair Be Cut?

I was sorting through pictures, and saw some pictures of us this time last year. My hair was at my chin. I haven't had a cut since then. Now a year later, it's over half way down my back. I don't dye my hair, or anything. It's naturally wavy, so I don't blow dry it. The point, it's healthy hair. It just looks...unkempt. . Is it not good to wait a year, to get it cut?? How often should someone ideally get their hair cut, for healthy looking ends and overall health? My hair grows super fast, obviously.

**Also, do have experience with your hairdresser using thinning shears? My hair is incredibly thick, and it seems so bulky. I'm a bit scared of them! I saw a hairdresser using them on a woman, and it seemed like SO much hair was falling!

So What Happened?

Yes, I donate my hair. I grow it out and cut it every year or two. I want to grow it longer, before I cut it. I have done locks of love in the past, but I think I will do Pantene this time.

Thanks for the advice!!

LOL I thought I was the only one who goes a year between cuts. To maintain a cut, 6-8 weeks. To keep hair healthy but not necessarily keep a style, it's probably best to not go more than 3 months, 6 at the most. My hair is long overdue for a cut (it was last cut 13 months ago) and started to get unruly and unmanageable at the beginning of the summer. I actually just made an appointment to get my hair cut tomorrow morning and while I'm there I'll make an appointment for 3 months out. I feel like such a schlump when I'm not getting it trimmed regularly. I'll keep up with regular trims for maybe a year and then I slip back into my lazy, low-maintenance ways again.

I only cut my hair once a year, although it's definitely a better idea to get it at least trimmed more frequently than that. I LOVE thinning shears. It IS a lot of hair that falls, but you will feel SO much lighter afterward!!

I'm a hairstylist. It's best to get it trimmed every 6-8 weeks. If you have a short or highly razored style, then every 4-6 weeks. But sometimes I will go as much as 12 weeks, gasp!

Waiting a year to get it cut, isn't the best, because you will often have dry damaged ends. If not trimmed off, the damage will travel up the hair shaft and damage more hair. Hair looks healthier and often times fuller and longer with regular trims.

Yes, thinning shears are incredible and if used correctly (not too close to scalp or earline ,or on certain hair textures...), they can help solve a lot of your hair problems, especially on thick, bulky hair.

I cut my hair when it feels crispy. That is about the only way to explain it. When the ends split I get it cut which is about once every six months or so. I actually like it shorter but I got a hair to grow it out and donate it.

As far as thinning shears go it looks like a lot of hair because it is. Think about how thick your hair is, you can thin out a lot and still have even more left. Personally I prefer layers and this wedging technique. I don't know what it is actually called but it keeps a healthy look.

you lucky girl that it grows so fast!!!

I would get it trimmed every 6 to 8 weeks - to ensure the dead ends get clipped. This will also help with the "un-kept look"

I couldn't go a year without cutting my hair. It would be a disaster!!!

My sister has very thick hair, and they use the shears to take out bulk. Her hair is gorgeous.

If you are going to try to keep it chin-length, then once every 6-8 weeks usually does the trick.

I think it depends on the length of your hair and how healthy it is. I have healthy long hair and I sometimes go 6 months...although 4-5 would probably be better.

I've had thinning shears used on my thick hair. It takes so much weight off!!! I actually ask for it. Sometimes the hair looks a little stringy as it is growing out...make sure they do it on underneath layers to prevent that problem.

Also, if your hair is so long, consider donating to Locks for Love. It requires a 10" donation and is a great cause! Instructions are online. If you don't want to cut that much, consider Pantene's donation program, I think they only require 6".

I've always heard every 6 to 8 weeks. However, I go about every 16 weeks, and trim my bangs myself inbetween cuts.

I have always heard every 6-8 weeks is the norm to maintain healthy hair, but I am beginning to think that is just something hairdressers tell you for them to maintain a consistent income! I know they need to make money and all, but I have very thick hair that grows pretty fast too. However, for the last couple of years I have followed this advice, only to watch them cut off all of my hard-earned growth! I mean my hair grows a good inch or so within a 6-8 week time frame, but if they are just going to whack off that much at every visit, the math isn't very hard to calculate! So I have decided to wait 6 months or as long as I can stand it before I go again.
I also have to have them use the thinning shears too. It looks like they are going to chop it all off, but it is SO nice to have it thinned right after. I do try to keep from talking too much to the hairdresser because it seems sometimes the more they talk, the more they cut! Yikes!

I'm kinda like you......I don't get it cut that often. However, every few months the ends start to look "fuzzy" so I go get a trim and it looks so much better! Get some layers in all around and that will lighten your load a bit.

6-8 weeks is recommended. Im lucky to go 2-3 times a year. I always have the beautician use the thinning shears because my hair is really thick too. A lot of hair does come out with the thinning shears but it makes a huge difference thats good.

I go about 3X per year. Thinning shears are a dream come true!!!! I even own my own pair and hack a way every now and then. The first time I used them, I thought for sure I made a horrible mistake because I saw clumps of hair come out. To my surprise, they work wonders. They really do take take hair evenly throughout. I say go for it. When I ask my hairdresser to use them on me, she never does enough.

Have it cut as often or as seldom as you think it needs cutting when you look in the mirror.

I trim my hair once every few years to even up ends.
If it's healthy and not looking damaged then it's a matter of trimming for styles sake.
I haven't had any split ends since I quit the curling iron, blow dryer and hair dye.
I henna it once every few months.
If you like to keep it at a certain length then you will cut about every 8 weeks.
Most peoples hair will grow at about 1/2 inch per month (or 6 inches a year).
It seems you have a faster growth rate than most!

If you want to keep long hair I'd trim the ends every other month just a 1/4 inch. It probably looking the way it is because you're not blowing drying it. I too have wavy hair and if I don't blow dry it I look like a stringy mess. You don't have to brush it out or straighten it. Just lightly blow dry it and then take a wide tooth comb or pick to take out the tangles. It'll look softer.
