How to Cover Gray Hair?

Well, I'm getting older and I've been plucking gray hairs for a few years now. But today I actually looked at myself in the mirror and noticed my hair has an overall grayish tinge. What can I do? I don't want to do anything that requires a salon - I have 2 young kids and I only make it for haircuts 2-3 times a year, so any salon coloring would end up looking terrible with 6-inch roots! And I don't really want to change the old color - I had it for years and liked it just fine. What can I do?

I haven't tried it but I noticed that there are also products to paint on that covers just the roots.

My daughter sometimes gets her hair colored at a beauty school where it costs much less.

I use Perfect Ten and I love it. 10 minutes and the color for me is very natural. I cannot see spending an hour plus at the salon and $60.00 every time I go.

I also get a TON of compliments on my hair and most people seemed surprised (although they might think I am cheap) that I use a over the counter product. Perfect Ten also has this great conditioner that you use once a week for six weeks.

I buy at the drug store and do it myself. It is pretty easy these days I consider it half an hour of me time.

With most now you don't get serious roots I just get some more gray peaking at me to tell me it is time to color again about every 6 weeks.

OMG I just told my mom that I'm wearing a white tee shirt and it matches my hair. She asked how was this possible. I said I'm looking at all this grey hair! Go to Sally's Beauty Supply (if you have one) and they have Wella Demi perm. Pick the color you want and the activator and an applicator bottle.

For a start and less expensive way to go.. get one of those tinted shampoos and see if that livens it up a bit... I think the ARTEC (poss mispl) is the better one in that you get more color.. they do have lesser expensive ones at a Walgreens, but I found those didn't wk as well..

I buy my dye at Sally's beauty and do it myself. It really isn't that hard and I can do it at home even though my kids complain all night about the smell. :p Cost me 8 dollars a month and takes no time out of my schedule.

I would do a rinse where it comes out in 28 or so washes-that way it's not permanent if you don't like the color. I just recently purchased Natural Instincts ( I think it's by Clairol). I went as close to my natural hair color as possible-slightly darker w/no brass tendencies. My friend actually did it for me which made it less messy. It actually turned out really nice and my hair was so silky soft. I felt prettier just covering up some of the gray "I've earned". I, too, cannot afford salon pricing to get my hair colored.
