Hi Moms,
So, I am expecting twins any day, and I have 5 older children, ages 12, 11, 8, 5 and 6 months, (my youngest is adopted) and all of all of my kids and I have colds. I really want us to get better before the twins arrive, because I really don't want them to get sick. Any ideas of how we can recover quickly?? Thanks so much!

My son has asthma and one of his worst triggers is the common cold. So, our house is constantly on prevent getting sick mode. We gargle many times a day: when we wake up, after breakfast, after lunch, after dinner, whenever we come back home after being out, whenever someone rings the doorbell and we talked with that person, and before bed. We always wash our hands before eating, handling food, after blowing our noses, after using the toilet, after returning home from being out, and after touching our cat. If you own a cat, you need to be very careful to always wash your hands after touching them. Cats are carriers of the common cold virus. You want to make sure any cats get vaccinated so they won't get sick. Even though the vaccinations drastically reduce a cat's risk of getting sick, that doesn't mean that they still can't pass that virus unto you. Also any visitors to our house must wash their hands and gargle as soon as they arrive. Try to eat healthy meals and snacks, get enough sleep daily, get calming time (even when it is just a few minutes here and there), and regular exercise. Even doing all this, we still sometimes get sick.

If one person in our family gets sick, our family is on sick mode. That means nobody gets sugary sweets, everybody gets a full night's sleep (8 hours for me and hubby and 12 for our 5 year old son), and towels and wash cloths get washed daily. Clothing gets washed as quickly as possible. If the sick person has a fever, the sick person(s) must rest. That means no tv, no playing, nothing but sleeping in the bed. Masks are worn by everyone, sick or not. If you cough or sneeze, you cover your mouth with your elbow or shoulder and turn away from other people and pets. All tissues are to go straight into the garbage after used. As much as possible, the sick person must eat well to recover and regain their energy. (My husband never wants to eat anything when he gets sick, even if he doesn't have any upset stomach. When he doesn't eat, it always takes twice as long for him to recover. So I try hard to encourage him to eat something.) Drink lots of water. Eat lots of chicken soup. Drink ginger and honey for a sore throat. Don't forget to take medicine when necessary. Make sure the room temperature isn't too hot, too cold, too wet, or too dry. When brushing teeth, make sure you don't get the whole sink covered when rinsing your mouth. This goes for gargling too. We use the motto, "How low can you go?" in our house to get our son to spit closer to the sink. And continue doing all those things I mentioned on how to prevent getting sick so often. Get those flu shots!

Some people laugh when I tell them how we reduced getting sick this last year and shortened our recovery time when we do, but I really don't care because I am seeing results from our effort. Last year when we started seriously following all this, we drastically cut the times we got sick in half. It also has meant a week of recovering has turned into about 3 days max. I know that my family's way might be more challenging with more people in your family, but you might be able to use something from our method. Wishing a peacful birth for your twins. Good luck conquering your colds.

Well, the old truism is that a cold takes 7 days if you treat it, and a week if you don't!

You can help things along with lots of water to flush things out, and no caffeine for anyone because it's dehydrating. That includes coffee and tea but also chocolate and any of those sports drinks which often contain caffeine.

Do anything you can to push fluids. Water is best but you can get that into kids with jello, popsicles, and other things.

It's no fun using a neti pot especially for little kids who can't figure it out, BUT it's safe and does a good job of rinsing out the nasal passages and sinuses. If you don't know how to use it, ask your pharmacist or PM me. It's available in any pharmacy and most large grocery stores and you just use a little salt in the warm water. The 12, 11 and 8 year olds can use it, and MAYBE the 5 if he/she sees the others doing it. It feels like you jumped in the ocean and forgot to hold your nose - stuffy but then it all drains out and you blow your nose a couple of times and it's much better.

Chicken soup puts some nice vapors under your stuffy noses and returns some fluids and salt to your system, and it gets some nutrition down those sort throats. I've also used hot & sour soup from the Chinese restaurant - especially for a sore throat. I'm a singer, and boy, that stuff will hold me for a two hour performance if I really guzzle it!

Hand washing is more effective BEFORE they all get sick - now it's kind of too late although I wouldn't discourage it. And don't let them rub their eyes after they've been sniffling and blowing noses - that gets the junk in the eyes and often causes conjunctivitis which is highly contagious and definitely not something you need right now, if ever!

Good luck!!

Hope you all get better soon!

I think that drinking lots of water is great. Flush the system!

Up the vitamin C. A LOT. Your body needs it. I also suggest Zycam or zinc losenges. They really do shorten the duration.

I suggest echinacea, but I don't know what the recommendation is for a pregnant woman on that so check with a doctor or pharmacist before doing that for yourself. You can make echinacea tea for the kids.

Avoid sugar and white flours AT ALL COST. Sugar taxes the immune system, along with white flours. Chicken soup also helps.

Colds can be triggered by big changes or impending losses. I know you will be GAINING two, but that can have feelings of loss for your kids. Be sure you reassure them on how much they are loved, and it doesn't hurt to spend some extra family time just relaxing and watching movies :)

Chicken noodle soup is proven to help get rid of a cold . Saline spray in your nose helps keep it moving so it doesn't turn into a sinus infection . Lots of rest and fluids.Lots of hand washing. The twins will be fine . They have lots of immunities . Congrats ! I have 6 1/2 year old boy /girl twins . Enjoy them :0)

I agree, chicken soup, LOTS of rest. For the older kids.. Hot tea with honey and lemonade.....have them laying down watching movies.

If your older children could do a neti pot.. it would really help them, feel so much better.
