How to Treat Nail Fungus

I went to have a fill on my acrylic nails last night and was dismayed to discover that a couple of my nails had developed a nail fungus...yuck! I had them remove all of my acrylics and they did put some sort of anti-fungal solution on them, but I wanted to see if any of you had ever encountered a similar problem and what you did to treat it. I am sure there are a lot of different products at beauty supply stores...has anyone purchased anything that has been particularly effective? I have worn nails on and off for years and have never had this problem, so I am really in need of some guidance.

what you need to avoid at all costs is to have the fungus spread to the base of nail--if it does that, it is pretty impossible to get rid of it and the nail gets pretty thick and nasty (from experience on both big toenails). I would go to a dermotologist to get the strongest thing available before it spreads.

Tea Tree oil. use a new q-tip for every nail so you dont dunk the fungused up q-tip back in the oil. i have found that it works far better than any over the counter medicine for any skin funguses.

There is a prescription pill that you can take. Its a 3 month cycle . It is the only thing that worked for my X. You have to do monthly blood draws while on the meds. Good Luck!

I know this may sound silly; but, soak your fingers in Listerine.

I would suggest going to the Health Food store and purchase oil of oregano or tea tree oil and put it on there until it goes away.

I wanted to tell you that I discovered fungus on my toenails a few years ago and I am still dealing with it. I went to a podiatrist and got a prescription, had followup after followup, etc. I've used a product that I got at Walgreens and I'm sorry I've fogotten the name of it but I was told it would work eventually if I used it every day for a long time. It had a very funny name and it was with a section of things you can buy for fungus related issues. You might go there and try to find it. Or ask someone who works there, they might know.

I still have ugly thick toenails that I'm thinking will probably never go away. I hope this won't be the case for you, but your expectation should be that it could take a while of very persistent treatment before you might be able to get rid of it. And I wouldn't wait. I'd start today.

Good luck.

hello,

My recommendation is to get Lamasil oral tabs that you may have to take for 1 or 2 months from your doctor. My husband had nail fungus on his toes and nothing worked. We bought many OTC meds nothing helped except that med. So don't waist your time and go to the pros.

Good luck,

S.

I went to the podiatrist (as it was a toenail) and he gave me a prescription nail polish to use daily. It took like 4 or 5 months to get rid of the fungus.

I believe the bottle was called Umecta. http://www.webmd.com/drugs/drug-89243-Umecta+Top.aspx?dru...

As far as fake nails, I haven't had them in over 20 years. Before I had kids I read about all the bacteria that gets caught in them on a regular basis (without adding babies into the mix) and I was totally grossed out. My friend who was a nurse said her hospital wouldn't allow them to have fake nails for that reason. So I got rid of them. But even just getting a regular pedicure wasn't safe and I got a nail fungus on my toenail. I'll only get pedicures now where they have the plastic tubs, with a disposible liner. It was such a pain to get rid of the fungus.

It sounds weird, but my mother-in-law swears by Vick's Vaporub. I have used it on my toenails before and it works. Rub a little on before bed and your nails will look better the next day. A few days of that and you should be clear. Good luck!

I have also seen a podiatrist for this. The script is a 90 day treatment and very expensive as most ins companies try fighting coverage on this. Go to Walgreens or Sallys and get Tea Tree Oil. Put it on everyday and it will clear it up. However it may take up to 6 months but stick with it. Its a small bottle that goes a long ways...it cost around 10.00. Good Luck
