I have my first appointment scheduled for the week after next. What kind of questions should I ask my doctor? Are there certain things I should bring up? In general, what do I do now? I am new to this and feeling a little overwhelmed so I appreciate the help.

Thanks,
C.

What can I do next?

Okay, I will probably be the odd man out but I will say it anyway, "What to Expect When Expecting" is a good book and can be helpful but it can be scarry too! I found a book with my second pregnancy that I liked so much better-"The GirlFriends Guide to Pregnancy" it was way better imo. It could be a bit "crass" at times but it was honest and I really liked it. HTH and Congratulations-it is so much fun.

Hit the library and/or Half Price Books and purchase "what to expect when you're expecting". I found it very helpful, informative, an easy read, and they even have a "questions to ask the doctor" section. Congratulations! Now you have to update your "about me" part! :)

If you have been going to your OB/GYN for awhile, I would ask him what you should be expecting. My OB/GYN had a packet that he provided, but I decided not to ask too much since I didn't want start to think I had every ailment or difficulty that a pregnant woman could have. My hormones were raging and my face broke out- worse than it ever did as a teenager. I also got the What to Expect When Expecting which was great. I only read it when I had questions though since I would imagine that I had everything wrong. This site is actually is also a good source as most of us Mamas are willing to offer our opinions or advice. Your first and third trimester you will really be tired but your second trimester is wonderful. I sent an e-mail to about 20 of my girlfriends asking advice for items they really liked and what items I should register for the showers. This was really helpful as they gave me great advice and I didn't waste money on junk that looked helpful but actually wasn't. Good luck and enjoy it.

Congratulations! Just remember - there's no stupid questions. They've heard it all. When I was pregnant with my son (1st preg.), I asked if I could still get a bikini wax - yes. Ride my bike? - no.

Just be prepared to have a whole bunch of weird things happen to your body. Continue to excercise, and just enjoy the ride. My oldest starts kindergarten on Monday, it goes fast!

Also, a lot of other responders said to start considering your birth plan - great idea. But, beyond that, consider your going back to work plan too. 1st - Do you plan to? Childcare? Breastfeeding/pumping logistics, etc. I nursed for 18 months, both kids, while working in a professional office, full time. I had a pumping schedule, a rotation of clean/dirty parts, etc. It's not an easy task either - but absolutely worth it and can be done. PM me if you have questions.

Congrats! Take it slow; you have lots of visits and you will always come up with more questions. The office is used to first time moms calling with questions, so no worries. I would ask about diet, what you should and shouldn't eat. How far along you are. Generally if you express that this is your first and have no idea what to do next, they will line you out. You will have lots of questions the further along you are and they are there for you.
Congrats again! Bye the way, you get to update your profile now!

There are no stupid questions.

I suggest writing down your questions on paper so you wont forget them.

They should give you a gift pack filled with info and the book "What to expect when your expecting." at least mine did...if not get the book it is great and helped me with a lot of questions when they came up.

I would ask what type of foods/drink should you stay away from. What are the best type of foods/drink to eat. As about morning sickness and the best ways to battle it should you have it.

Get on prenatales and folic acid as soon as possible. You might also need calcium pills as well....a baby can take a toll on your bones.

Good luck and congrats!

Lots of things..
About the baby - how far along are you that sort of thing
About the pregnancy -pre-natals, diet, exercise
About the care - tests, ultrasounds, classes, etc

To me the most important thing is the kind of birth you want. Many hospitals in this are are not so good about giving you choices - some questions would be -can I eat during labor? will you let me go past 40 weeks or will you try to induce? What percentage of your patients need pitocin (induction drug), what percentage need episoitomys etc.
Who is allowed with you during labor? Can you walk around during labor? Will they allow birth balls?

I would personally research the hospital (or birth center) and then pick the doc. Not all Dallas hospitals are the same.

www.dallasareamoms.com is a great resource for this kind of research.

Whops - I forgot -CONGRATS!!!! Also I loved the book "The pregnancy bible"

Am I the only one that hated that book -What to expect when you're expecting. Gosh it tells you every thing that can go wrong and was very editorialized - they have strong opinions on some stuff.

Anyway -Congrats!

I would ask about diet, exercise and what you can and cannot do. Every doc has a different take on that.

I agree with Kris -have you thought about the kind of birth you want? Make sure you and your doc have the same vision of what you are wanting.

I actually found another series of books more helpful than the What to Expect books.......they are called Great Expectations and you can find them at Barnes and Noble. The Pregnancy and Childbirth book in this series is VERY detailed and wonderful!

Congrats!!!

Get on a pre-natal right away if not already.
Buy "what to expect when you're expecting" and "your pregnancy week by week"
I enjoyed writing in a Pregnancy journal - there are a lot that have day by day developments on your baby...I look back at my entries often. Neat way to remember...it goes by fast.

Just get all the "what can i do" and "what should I avoid" advice from your doc and ENJOY!!
