I Know This Is a Question for a Doctor But....

Has anyone ever become allergic to a pet out of nowhere? My dog is 4 years old and lately whenever I am near him i start to sneeze, and get really stuffed up. I still vacuum frequently and he is shedding a bit more lately ( getting new fur in for a winter coat maybe ?! ).. This has happened to me before, but in a different way- I am not allergic to long haired cats, but EXTREMELY allergic to short haired. I have never experienced this with him before, and ive lived in a 4 season state my entire life.

Also, second part of this- does over the counter allergy medicine work? Or does it make you all stuffy headed and not meant for prolonged use? Not so bad that I am thinking of getting rid of him, he was my first baby !! Thanks for the input in advance!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone. He has been getting bathed regularly, and I have been vacuuming more to try to get rid of my sniffles. I will probably buy some over the counter claritin and hope that once the winter snow starts falling I wont be sneezing!

Like the others have posted. Allergies can start at anytime and even to those things you have never been allergic to before.

Yes, it is possible. My husband developed allergies just this year and the doctor said allergies can start anytime in life. My husband takes the generic for Clariton and it works great! He gets the Walmart brand and on the box it states "compare to Clariton". Good Luck hopefully this helps a little!

Allergies and sensitivities to chemicals or other materials can occur, or fade away, at any time during one's life. They often come on or become more noticeable during or after a stressful time.

Lots of people get ongoing relief from OTC allergy meds. I don't do well with them, but get remarkably good relief, with no side effects, from the occasional exposure with a couple of homeopathic remedies. These are available OTC in many drugstores and health food stores. A little online investigation will help you identify which remedies are likely to work best for which symptoms.

My personal favorite for hay fever symptoms is Histaminum Hydrochloride in any available strength. You may need to experiment a bit, but the remedies are under $10 each and very safe.

Both of my dogs are adopted. We adopted my Aussie when he was 15 months...he was one of 4 dogs in another family. The tween daughter developed severe allergies out of no where. All of their pets (different breeds and ages) were put up for adoption due to the severity of these allergies. It does happen....this was not a "bogus" excuse. The mom was distraught about losing all of her pets but of course her daughter came first. Allergies sometimes go away too. My mother was allergic to cats the first 1/2 of her life and now they don't bother her at all. I used to never have a problem with cats but now after being around a cat, I feel like I need to rip out my own eyeballs due to itchiness...and I am stuffed up too. Good luck.

my son's allergist told us his peanut allergy was due to "overindulgence"!!
Here we are 11 years later & it's still an issue...

For your dog, have someone else thoroughly brush the dog. Give it a bath, vacuum the house top/bottom, clean everything. Start Zyrtec....& hopefully this round of allergies will end for you.

One more thought: at certain times of the year, when our dogs come into the house, my head fills up. I am reacting to the seasonal allergens being carried in on their coats...& not the actual dogs! Hope this helps!

Yes., you can become allergic to a pet you've had :( But double check some things first: Have you recently changed his shampoo? What about at the groomers? Could be that... Hope you feel better! Wash him very frequently (at least once a week) & keep him shaved; that should help some.

My son uses Allegra or Zyrtec (he switches every few months from one to the other) and they help a lot. And yes, you can develop allergies. Before you assume it is your dog, though, is there anything that could be different about the dog? Gotten into something, changed it's shampoo, changed it's food, etc.? It might be something about the DOG that has changed, rather than you. Just a thought..

I developed allergies out of the blue. Mine are seasonal though. Is it possible its seasonal and not the dog?

Yes, allergies can develop any time. But think of this -- does your dog spend much time outside? Any? What you may be reacting to allergically might not be him (or just him); it might be allergens from outside that he is carrying on his fur and paws. You can't keep him inside forever to test that theory, of course, but if you're bathing him more and perhaps also cleaning his paws well every time he comes in from outside, that could help. Do see a doctor, of course, and maybe even ask for a referral to an allergist who can pinpoint more exactly what it is that's causing the problems.

This happened to my husband. He has been around all types of pets all his life. We also live in a 4 season state. It started out of nowhere just like you. I was told that you can become allergic at any time in your life. We both use Zyrtec. It is great and have had no side effects. Hope this helps.

Yes you can. My allergist told me that our body chemistry changes completely every seven years. As a result you can grow out of or into allergies at any point in your life. I used to have a severe asthmatic allergy to cats. I am now no logger allergic to cats but my dog allergy is much worse:(. Seems crazy to me but it is true!
