I Need a Book!

Hi Ladies, Like I'm sure lots of you feel, I feel like my life has been going at a million miles an hour lately. Too many obligations, too much time on technology (phone, email, etc.). When I do get a free moment, usually late at night, I have been just vegging in front of the tv for a few minutes. But, what really calms me and quiets my mind is reading a good book, something I have not been making time for lately. Tonight I am vowing that after the kiddos go to bed I will sit down with no tv and no phone or email and just read. I love to read, all types of books. I have to do a lot of serious reading for my job, so I tend to like more "junk food" type books-Catherine Anderson type romances, or Mary Higgins Clark type mysteries, or Sophie Kinsella type humor (but I'm open to anything).
So, have you read any great books lately (something I could get on Kindle before tonight)? Looking for something light but attention-grabbing enough to keep me away from technology. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

So What Happened?

Sadly, it's three days later and still haven't made time to get/read a book. But, when I do I will have lots of great suggestions-thank you all!

I just finished a cute series by Nora Roberts, the Inn BoonsBoro trilogy. I find that her novels are generally easy to consume and well written.

Don't know what to suggest for you, but I signed up for Bookbub.com and get a daily e-mail of low-cost or free books. You can specify what genre you will get notices on.

I started with InspiredReads.com and downloaded a BUNCH of free Christian novels....... but InspiredReads no longer has free ones. However, between BookBub and Inspired reads I have over 400 books on my Kindle. I pretty much "bought" whatever book was free.....

First I just have to comment that it is a little ironic that you will be reading on your Kindle to avoid technology. ;)

I also like Firefly Lane. I love the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series by Alexander McCall Smith. I think they are funny. I also really liked State of Wonder by AnnPatchett, In the Shadow of the Banyan by Vaddey Ratner, The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver, Little Bee by Chris Cleve, The Light Between Oceans by M. L. Stedman, The Speed of Dark by Elizabeth Moon, Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood by Rebecca Wells, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith, Hotel at the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford, and Annie Freeman's Fabulous Traveling Funeral by Kris Radish.

I am reading my first fiction book in over a year, and it's "where'd you go, Bernadette." My plan is to curl up and spend the whole evening reading it. The first few pages hooked me.

I rejoined book club, and this is the pick. Im sooo glad, it's great thus far.

I loved Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah. I read it over the summer and I'm going to read its' sequel next.

I belong to GoodReads.com. They ask you to rate books you've already read then they make suggestions for you based on what you've rated. Another feature it offers is logging books that I'd like to read. I always see something mentioned in a magazine but forget it when I'm surfing Amazon.

J D Robb. Nora Roberts alter ego. She writes under this name because this series of books are much more graphic, violent, and are quite a bit longer.

No other mystery books interest me now...lol. I love Nora Robers writings as J D Robb.

They are called the In Death series. Start with the first one "Naked in Death" then proceed. They are very good in my opinion.

If you like Nora Roberts (I second the Inn Boonesboro series !) you might try the Key series. It is a trilogy - Key of Light is the first. Kind of a romance / paranormal mystery (not too weird though). I also liked her Seven series - another trilogy. I believe Blood Brother is the first one.

Also - I also do the freebies on Kindle. There are alot that I have gotten (all genre's) that I have ended up loving and read alot more by that same author. I do Book Bub, eReaderIQ, Inspired Reads, Book Dip for emails on freebies. Sometimes they have some of the same books listed but alot of times they have different books.

Reconstructing Amelia by Kimberly McCreight
The Tao of Martha by Jen Lancaster
Me Before You by JoJo Moyes
Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor
The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker

Two authors who will be up your alley. The books are easy reads, but also page-turners.

Sue Grafton. Female PI solves mysteries. It's fun but suspenseful. Main character is awesome. Series starts with A is for Alibi.

Janet Evanovich: Female bounty hunter. A lot of humor as she chases down bad guys who've skipped bail. Series starts with One for the Money. This was made into a bad Katherine Heigl movie, which got such horrible reviews I didn't even bother seeing it, despite loving the series. If you saw the movie, don't be scared off.

I just finished "Gone Girl." You might have already read it since it was really popular a year ago, but for me it was one of those "I don't want to put it down" books and I haven't read one like that for a while. I always recommend "The Guernsey Sweet Potato Pie and Literary Society." (I think that's the correct title, it's been a while since I read it.) It's not really "junk food" for books, but it is a pretty easy read. I like the Tea Shop mystery series for light reading. They are set in Charleston, SC.

It sounds like you prefer a lighter read - Jennifer Weiner and Kristen Hannah are good authors for that type of book.

I love the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich too! So cute!

I just started reading the very latest Bridget Jones book! It's a little different than the last ones, but it's still cute and fluffy!

Okay, this is a tiny bit embarrassing but I LOVE those cheesy, romantic, predictable Christmas stories that they usually make movies about on Lifetime. Debbie Macomber writes many of those. She also wrote a Thanksgiving one that I just read that I got for my Kindle for like $3. It was adorable and I loved it.

Other than that, you may want to consider Young Adult fiction. It's usually good stories, well written, but fluffy enough to sail through without much dedication! The Book Thief is amazing! I highly recommend it and they are just about to release a movie of it soon!
