I Need a Good Vet Who Won't Charge an Arm and a Leg!

I have a 1 year old golden retriever/pyranees mix. Due to the fact that we have a new baby, I haven't been outside to take care of him in weeks, so my husband has. He loves our family, and the dog most of the time, but doesn't get to play around much with him in the daylight (he leaves for work before 5 and doesn't see him again until I'm home from my evening job well after dark)
My husband comes in from the backyard last night to tell me that he (the dog) has a bunch of "gunk" coming from his ear. We need to get him in to get his 1 year shots, but now we have to deal with this too. The vet that we have been seeing charges SO much just for shots and with a new baby, we can't afford to pay a bunch of money to take care of all this now, but we've got to get him seen. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

What can I do next?

D.,

Try Banfield in McKinney. They have a health plan. It is anywhere from $17 to $21 per month, depending on which plan you pick. We have a 2.5 lb. chi-shi who is 6 months old, but when we got her she was only 10 oz. Since she was so small, she had to have her shots broken down into such small doses that it meant many visits. That was just way to expensive so we found Banfield and did the plan instead. She has still had to have all her shots broken down into small doses and many visits, but it is all covered in the plan. We even have spay costs covered. It really seems the least expensive way to go. Good luck!

Hi D.-

I completely "feel your pain". We have an English Bulldog (which are known to have MANY health problems) and it seems a full time job to keep him 100%.

We were going to a vet in Plano and everytime we would go, it was $300+!!! I felt as though we were paying for the vet to have all of his high tech equipment to do unnecessary testing. Just to clean the dogs ears, he would charge $100 because he used some machine with a scope to take pictures of the ear canal??? We stopped going to him when he wanted to charge us $650 to run an allergy test on the dog...

I decided to take our dog to a vet closer to home. I'm so impressed and pleased, we would never think of going anywhere else. The Pavillion Animal Hospital (pavillionanimalhospital.com) is located on the SW corner of Coit & Campbell in Richardson. Dr. Grimes takes the old fashioned approach and is more than reasonable with his prices. For instance, the last time we were in, we had our dog's annual shots, vaccines, a steroid shot for his hip dysplasia, and had him bathed and groomed (ears cleaned, nails trimmed, etc) for less than $120.

I would definitely call him, I know you'll be happy with him.

I would suggest going in for the ear infection now and wait for the shots. If your dog is just now a year old, the shots probably aren't even due just yet. Even if they are, the shots can wait, but that ear needs to be treated before it gets worse.

We have 3 dogs and we go to High Point Animal Clinic, Ted Staph.

Another option.....Petco has a vet that comes in once or twice a month on Sundays and charges just for shots and what you need. We have been there on the Sunday they were there. THe line gets long so go early. THey are only there until noon. Just call Petco and they will tell you the dates. This was at the one in Allen. I understand other pet/feed stores do the same.

I hope you get things settled in enough to give this dog the care and attention he/she needs.
