I Need Suggestions for Combing My Daughters Hair

I have the hardest time combing my daughters hair. (6 years old) She has very fine hair like mine, but it has a light curl to it so it is always tangled. It is below her shoulders. It does not looked combed after you just combed it.

My daughter hates to have her hair combed! I use spray leave in conditioner from the hair salon and we still have a struggle every morning. She will scream when the brush is an inch away from her.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can make hair combing easier to get done in the morning? I am willing to try anything. (exept cutting her hair -- at this time that is.)

Thanks in advance!

So What Happened?

Thank you for all your advise! She gets a bath every other day. (usually more often in the summer when she gets real dirty :) I now brush her hair right after her bath and put it in a braid. In the morning I take the braid out and I can just comb through her hair with my fingers and detaingler if needed. (johnsons and johsons - thanks for that advise) Her hair has nice bouncy curly q's all over and they are not frizzy anymore. On nights she does not have a bath, I put her hair in a braid and it is still nice the next morning after being combed through with my fingers. She only complains when I comb her hair after her bath. I think she just hates seeing the comb.

Thanks again!!

Get a spray bottle and put conditioner in it with water, spray her hair quite a bit and then brush her hair in sections. Also french braiding helps a lot.

I have the same problem and my daugter has the same type of hair, she is just two. I comb it when she is in her high chair sine she is "trapped". I do my best but her hair always looks messy. I ge frustrated too especially the times when she has a runny nose and/or dirty face and I think people must think I neglect her terribly. The only thing I have tried that kind of works is put he on her step stool in front of her bathroom mirror and let her do her own hair while I comb mine with lots of ooohing and aaaahing. I just keep in mind that most of the time kids don't earn anything overnight and this one is a slow build. Hey at least she's not overly picky and has to haive perfect hair or she has a fit right?

Both my daughters and I have curly hair and I feel your pain! With my daughters, I use Johnson and Johnson detangler. I also try to wet their hair before I brush it and I try to brush it before bed and never let them sleep on wet heads, that jsut adds to tangles! I dont know if any of this has helped, I hope it has.

That's around the time my daughter got her first short haircut. My daughter has fine, very curly hair and it was very liberating and empowering for her to have short hair. She was able to style and wash(!) it herself and add barrettes and headbands and she loved it. Also around that age she was resenting me doing it for her anyway, thinking moms only did that for "babies." Later she grew it out and was old enough to do it herself. Now she's 14 and has it very short again(and she's gorgeous that way, fyi short hair doesn't keep boys away - if anyone has found boy repellant, please let me know!). I always thought it was weird sometimes when adults would be so attached to her hair and wanting it to be long, even though it was a pain (physically and mentally) for her. Also you should decide if hair is worth you two having a taxing episode everyday. Hair grows very quickly, you might want to try short and see if it works for her. If not, grow it out again and it'll be back in no time. Good luck.

Hi,

I had the same with my youngest with her hair when she was young. She has gorgeous curls and her hair was way past her bottom. Brushing it was a major chore.

I used claypac conditioner from the salon I went to, it was the best conditioner I had every used.

I am not sure where you can find it but I always got it in Palatine, Illinois at the salon Shear Pleasure on Dundee rd and Smith.

Hope this helps.

Hi! I used to be the same way your daughter is I use sunsilk creme and leaves my hair nice and soft for me to comb. I know this is for adults but try it. I am 35 with long hair and not too curly but it enough to be tangle all the time but since trying this my hair is soft.

Good luck.

One little thing that my sister does for my niece is have her sleep on a silky/satiny pillowcase, which really cuts down on tangles for the morning. May be worth a try.

I braid my daughters long curly hair every night before bed. This really seems to cut down on the amount of tangles. In the morning, I spray her hair down with a water bottle, spray some detangler, use only a wide tooth comb and let it dry naturally. There will always be tangles but I feel this really helps!

How about braiding it loosely at night?

I use Suave's detangler. It's inexpensive and smells great. It also doesn't leave a greasy feeling to it like the Johnson's No More Tangles did. My daughter is black and white, but her hair is very fine like mine with a nice spiral curl. Her hair is also below her shoulders. Another product I use when I leave her hair down is a gloss spray (it has anti-frizz and helps add shine to her hair, since light doesn't bounce off curly hair like it does straight hair). Neither product weights down her hair, and it looks nice throughout most the day. Also, before my daughter goes to bed at night, I braid her hair. One or 2 braids works well, and then I tuck the ends under and tie it off at the bottom of her hairline, so less of her hair escapes her braid. Good luck! I hope it works for you!

My daughter's hair is pin-curl curly! We use a product called Curly-Q's (I get it off the internet - sent from CA!). After shampooing and conditioning her hair, I use a spray moisturizer and comb it through. They have a product called Curly Q custard (a leave in conditioner) and I work it through in sections. While it sounds like a lot of product, it's all about how you apply it! I also pin-curl twist my daughter's hair and simply separate the curls as the days go by. Most times, I can get at least 2 days of pin-curl separating before getting it wet again and it's got only a few tangles.

Hi M.,
I have similar problems with my daughters hair and I don't want to cut it. Her hair goes below her waist and she is 7. One suggestion I have is: I comb her hair at night and put it in a braid. When she sleeps it does not get as messy. In the morning we take out the braid and it combs easily. (and don't worry, they grow out of it - I have a 15 year old who had quite long hair too) Good Luck

I have curly hair and have always hated having anyone else comb it, even at the salon with "salon products". I would recommend that you not brush it though, that just causes frizz. Use a wide toothed comb, they are sometimes called shower combs and don't worry about trying to comb every strand of hair, that is not how our hair works. Enjoy and let her enjoy her wild hair.

I recently had the same problem with my daughters hair we only have cut her hair once and she is almost 4 it was past her waist and very fine and straight we used Pantene which was great for a while then we tried Aussie No tangles and tried leave in conditioners as well I hate to say this but the only thing that ended up working is cutting her hair it turned out the reason it was so hard to comb or brush was the split ends were so bad even a slight trim may do the trick-

Sometimes Salon products are not the best. No more tangles or just a detangler will do the trick. Nothing fancy. Spray in conditioners dont do a THING for my hair or my neices who has the same problem as you do. Don't use leave in conditioner...try the no more tangles stuff.

We use a product that detangles hair after we wash our daughters hair. I believe it Johnson's and Johnson's in an orange bottle. then, i always put a cream in her hair after washing and dry it. The key to not having tangled bed hair in the morning is to tie it up loosely when she sleeps. Not sure how old your daughter is, but mine is use to getting it combed out when we wash it, so it makes it easier. then in the morning, we loosen it up and it's easy to style. don't wait 3-4 days to wash her hair (not saying YOU do). Ours gets hers washed every other day so the process is easy. questions, ###-###-####.

How old is your daughter number one? Because as a professional stylist I would say daughters give their mothers the hardest times combibg their hair between the ages of two through six...no matter if it is curly or not. I cannot tell you how many times I have heard a mother say "I wish she would sit that nice for me." That being said, I am an extemely curly haired adult as is my sister, and my mother...we all had short hai(shoulder length or above) until we were old enough to care for it. I know you do not want to cut it, but sometimes you have to ask yourself is the battle worth it. I love long hair on little girls, but a chin length bob is just as adorable, especially if you are looking for it to be neat, and it is a lot more managable, comb and go or put some barettes in it, a headband. I will also telll you that generally fine hair is more prone to tangling whether or not it is curly, especially if it is longer than the shoulders. One thing you could try is is sectioning it as you comb it (approx. 1 inch sections) and spray with detangler as you comb through it with a small tooth comb starting at the bottom of the section as you work your way up and through the tangles. I have found this works much better than a large tooth comb and no sectioning as tangley hair likes to wrap itself around a large tooth comb...I hope this helps and good luck.

Hmmm....I may have some suggestions. I have curly hair and I remember hating it when people combed my hair. It is much less painful when I comb/brush my own hair (esp if I hold the hair down on my scalp while brushing the ends). Is she old enough to comb it herself? Are you using a wide-tooth comb? Another option is to spritz it with water and finger-comb it, which may be less painful - esp if she does the combing. I only run the comb through my hair when I am in the shower or right afterwards, but it's easiest when I have conditioner in my hair. The other thing is that my hair is least tangly when it has been recently cut. Is it possible that she needs dead ends cut off?

I would use a gel on it to tame the curl.

Also, have you seen the book Curly Girl? They have some good suggestions!

You have a lot of good advice on combing her hair. My daughter has wild curly hair. It works best to wet with a water bottle, then spray conditioner and brush. Next I use a tiny dab of Wired by Rusk. It is a hair protectant. I rub it into her hair (it keeps it looking nice for most of the day, without getting wispy or frizzy). Good luck. Also piggy tails and barrets help to create a neat look.

My daughter is four and has the same type of hair--except part of her hair is slightly curly, and other parts are pin straight! It's impossible to keep it looking neat and tidy unless I wet it, put product into it and then blow dry it straight. It's something we only do for photographs or special occassions and because it's an occassional thing--she kind of enjoys that attention.

However, I can't do that every day, we just dont' have the time and she wouldn't handle it well.

What we did when she was young was to cut it in a page boy style and that kept it from looking too messy as the day wears on. Now that she's older she wants it to grow out and we're just dealing with the 'messiness.'

Good luck!
