Coconutmilk icecream!!!
There are about a dozen brands out there... I would make it a 'girls taste test' afternoon one day and bring home about 6 tubs of different brands :) :) :)
One of my very best friends is very ill. She has finished Chemo, but now it has left her lactose intolerant. She has really enjoyed ice cream as a treat while ill. Today she said she really was craving ice cream, but we had to remind her how ill it makes her.
Can you all recommend a good nondairy "ice cream".
FYI, as an update, this is my friend that has been so ill, the cancer has now spread to her brain and she has been given 3 more months. We are all in shock. We are always used to a happy endings, and so this is very difficult for all of us.
We just want her to have the few pleasures she seeks. Thanks

Well, there's real ice cream that's lactose free. Lactaid brand has some, but it's a bit spendy. Breyer's also has a vanilla lactose-free ice cream that's really good. They have the lactase enzyme and the lactose has already been digested, so to speak, but it still has milk protein in it. If she's only lactose intolerant then she should be okay with it.
You can also get fruit sorbets that are delicious and don't have any dairy at all in them. The best one I've found is by Whole Fruit and you can find it at Price Chopper.
L.,
I am so sorry to hear about your friend.
If you have a hard time tracking down a dairy free ice cream, you can make it with frozen bananas. Take a few frozen bananas, stick them in a food processor with some almond milk or other dairy free "milk", and add in whatever other flavorings you like. I like the peanut butter and banana combo, I have also tried adding peanut butter and cocoa powder, or a bunch of berries. I think it tastes great and the banana just makes it sweet, it is not overpowering banana flavor. Process in the food processor till it resembles ice cream.
Hi L. ~ Turtle Mountain makes So delicious ice cream that is non dairy I know that HEB carries it in all kinds of yummy flavors they also have flavors made w/Coconut milk. I'm so sorry to hear about your friend.
Tofutti is awesome. I seriously really like it...just the vanilla flavor, haven't tried the others. Our Hy-Vee carries it, and overall (considering it's a speciality food) it's not terribly expensive. It's (obviously! :) made from tofu, and is non dairy and yummy. I honestly really like it...it tastes more like a really good frozen yogurt.
I'm so sorry L.. You sound like a woman on a mission, and your dearest friend WILL get her ice cream! There are some frozen yogurt blends that are delicious! I'm sending her a prayer.
I have heard that Luna & Larry's Coconut Bliss ice cream is wonderful. It's made with coconut milk, so it's dairy free. Here's a link in case you want to find a store that sells it: http://coconutbliss.com/
I'm very sorry about your friend.
Im lactose intollerant and have tried 2 brands from Safeway. One is "So Delicious". I think its soy milk and was good. Hard as a rock but good. I am allergic to chocolate so I only tried the vanilla. Then I tried either Bryers or Dryers, not sure which, but they only had the one in lactose free, but it was way better! It had a slight minty taste at first and then just real good vanilla ice cream taste. It was creamy and good as a milk shake mixed with lactose free milk. I think frozen yogurts taste like ice cream too but some are easier on the stomach than others and not made with milk. Im real sorry your friend is going thru this. Hug her lots and enjoy what time you have with her.
Trader Joes has some great non-dairy options, too...sorbets, coconut, and soy milk selections.
You're a good friend. I'm so sorry you all are going through this. =(
Talenti makes a sorbetto that is soooo creamy and delicious. Minimall ingredients with tons of flavor! I just checked the back of my sonoma strawberry and the list is this: strawberries, water, sugar, lemons, carob bean gum. My daughter has a milk protein allergy and this is our favorite.
I just want to say what a wonderfull, supportive friend you sound like. Hang in there, L., I'll be praying for your dear friend.
Sorbet at Ben and Jerrys is great. Coconut milk ice cream is also great. My son loves both.
If she is only lactose intolerant and not allergic to the actual milk protein could she do the "Lactaid" brand ice cream? It might be the best solution since the soy, rice, and coconut milk ice creams may deviate too much in flavor from regular ice cream.
My little brother is allergic to all dairy products, and growing up, Grandma would make him home made ice cream using non dairy creamer. All of us kids loved it! We used to complain because he was the only one who got to eat it on a reguar basis, and we had to eat the stuff out of the box! lol
There has to be a non dairy ice cream. How about Ice Milk (not sure what
is in it) but I know it is something like ice cream. If you have a Trader Joes
close by, they must have something. Prayers and hugs to you and your
friend.
I second Coconut Bliss! I'm picky about my ice cream and find that most non-dairy alternatives don't have that creaminess I crave. However, I can and have eaten a whole tub of chocolate and peanut butter CoconutBliss in one evening. My prayers for you and your friend.
I am very sorry to hear that you are going through this right now. Right on for staying positive and offering support in this transition for your friend. It can be a beautiful experience as well.
As far as a suggestion: sorbet in every single flavor imaginable :) and give her the choice of which flavor she prefers. Giving the choice is empowering.....
I am sorry for your friend's sickness. Kudos to you for trying to make her as comfortable as possible. I will say prayers for peace for both of you.
I'm so sorry to hear about your friend, she is blessed to have you by her side during this ordeal.
I would recommend So Delicious coconut milk ice cream, very smooth and creamy and it has quite a few flavors. The mint chocolate chip is very good and the entire line is dairy free.
I buy my daughter the Breyer's (or is it Dreyer's?) lactose-free ice cream. The vanilla tastes a little more like French vanilla to me, but otherwise, I'd never be able to tell the difference. If she likes a certain flavor, you can always mix something into it.
I'm so sorry she is so sick.
Lots of sorbets and gelatos are dairy free. Do you live near a Whole Foods market? The one near me has a gelato counter with super yummy chocolate gelato that is totally dairy free.
Sorry to hear about your friend.
Health food stores have coconut milk ice cream and rice dream. we love coconut milk cookie dough. it's awesome.
This is kind of off the path of your question, but maybe you or your friend can find some things in this book ("Beating Cancer with Nutrition" by Dr. Patrick Quillen [patrickquillen.com]) that are useful. My mom has lung cancer, and we are using the book as a guideline for adjuvant treatment and to minimize the bad effects of her mainstream medical treatment. So far, my mom has experienced no problems with her chemo/radiation. There are also encouraging success stories of people with terminal cancer and poor prognoses in the book. Prayers for you and her...
