Good Times Invitations
I am starting to think about what to do for my soon to be 6 year old's birthday party. Over the years we have gone to Chucky Cheeses, bowling, Odyssey Fun World(off of 88),had one at home (which I'm not doing again), and at Build a Bear. Some of these places can cost up to $200 and I'm not looking to spend that much. His birthday is in the second week of October so something outside might be to cold. We were thinking of just doing Odyssey Fun World again because they can just run around and always have fun there. There will probably be a total of less than 10 kids. Any other ideas?? Thanks
J.

J.,
Have you tried a bowling party? Or you can do a dress up halloween party at your house.......saves lots of money.

A roller skating party all the way! Make it retro 70's attire. The parents will have fun helping the kids come up with an outfit and hair styles.
We've gone to a few and they're a blast. All ages love it.
Here's a link of all Illinois rinks. We go to Skate USA in Romeoville. They're reasonably priced too.

The Nova 8 theater in Naperville is $6 per kid for a party. Clean, not fancy, but nice!!
It seems like any birthday party option is going to run you around $200 whether you have it at a party place or your home. I'd ask your son if he really wants to have a big birthday blowout with the minimum of 10 kids that most places require, or if he'd rather do something with one or two friends, such as going to an outdoor fall festival, hitting a major attraction like legoland in Schaumburg or to visit something off the beaten path that you might have never been able to go to with a large group. Check out a local copy of a family entertainment magazine. They're free and you can find them at most park districts or libraries. Save the cake and presents for a separate family gathering on a different date. If he's set on doing the big party, some other options would be maybe a Brunzwick Zone. They offer Bowling packages that inclued an hour of bowlling/pizza/party room & craft. Also October is a big month for many children's productions to roll through town. The Sears Center, Rosemont and the like have lower prices on tickets for groups of 10 or more. Whatever you choose to do, I hope you have a fun stress free time!
We have been to a party that was for 2 children at a local park district swimming pool. I say 2 children because the parents split the cost and the 2 parents weren't competing for a date as their children were 1 week apart. We went to the Oak Brook park district in door pool. Also Lockport has a new indoor pool you may want to check out.
Why not a a birthday party at the pumpkin patch? (We love Kuiper's too! We drive an hour and a half just to go there every season. They have a pumpkin farm as well as the apple farm) Everyone could dress up. You could have it in the middle of the afternoon , like 1pm-4pm, so that you only have to provide a snack (ie popcorn, taffy apples, and apple cider).
If you are far from the pumpkin farm (which ever you choose) and you have a van, I would offer to transport the children. I would also ask another friend/mom of my son's friend to help with the party and transport.
In the Halloween theme, you could also do a halloween party at your house. My mom threw one for me when I was little in our garage. It made a lot less mess that way.
Another fun party that I had for my son this past June was at Brookfield Zoo. In my situation, I had a small group of moms and kids. They all had memberships or coupons to get in free. That took a lot off the budget. I paid for all the rides, and attractions (Hamill Family Play Zoo, Carousel, Dolphin show, etc). The tickets are good for a year so if you have to cancel or buy too many you can always use them again. Send me a private message if you would like more info on how to plan this with out going through the zoo (big $$).
Hi J. ,
Have you thought about trying your local movie theater , some have birthday packages . I know the theater in the york town mall does .
Hi - You could try Bogie's in Oswego, which is a combo of bouncing inflatables in one room and miniature indoor glow-in-the-dark golf in the other. Sounds nuts, but the mini golf is a blast! We have been to four parties there so far and I have heard it is not too pricey. Bouncetown is also another option but can be a lot more expensive. Since his party is in October, what about going to Kuiper's Apple Farm in Kirkland? It might be a stretch for a group of six year olds but they have a petting zoo, corn maze, pumpkins and so forth. If you live close to Eola Road, the Community Center there has party options too. The soccer one is fun - they play soccer games for an hour! My b-day is in October too so I can relate to your weather concerns, but you could also try The Morton Arboretum and tell everyone to dress warmly, or even Cosley Zoo in Wheaton. Good luck and have fun!
My son is 6 and will be 7 in October. Try Pump it up. It is located by Lisle Park District in the industrial area behind the High school. They have 3 seperate rooms filled with inflateable bouncing jumping toys and they time it for you. So for 40 min in one room, 20 in another and maybe 30 in the food room where you eat and open gifts. They clean up the party for you as well. www.pumpitup.com
