Ideas to Help My Twelve Month Old Crawl

My daughter will be twelve months old at the end of this month and she still is not crawling. She can sit, do a baby push-up, and roll over both ways. I am looking for any tips or ideas to help her to crawl. When I place her on her tummy or in the crawling position she just rolls to her back. I have placed food or toys out in front of her, but she just rolls over and stretches her body out while laying down to reach them. If she cannot reach the toy or food and she is more than content to play with her feet or hands. I have tried toys that roll and when they roll out of reach she finds something else to play with like the carpet. Her fine motor skills and verbal skills are where they should be, but no crawling or standing. Any ideas would be very helpful

What can I do next?

Hmmmmmmmm, tough call. Like everyone said every baby is diff. She has a well baby coming up I'd mention it to the doc.
But I wouldn't be suprised next time you blink she will be walking (or at least it will seem that way).
My daughter crawled then walked the next week, she was one week from her 1st b-day when she took her firt wobbly step.

Have you tried taking her to a Little Gym class where chances are a lot of the other kids will be walking around?
We started going at 10 months and by 11 my boy was walking.
How about playgroups?

My oldest son only did the "army crawl" by pulling himself around with his arms, never using his legs, walked at 14 months, then got the concept of crawling. If she is putting weight on her legs when assisted, I don't think that there is a problem, but I would check with your peds to be sure.

crawling is very important for neurological growth and proprioception(sp?) I am concerned that your child may have a heavy metal toxicity that may be delaying normal growth and development.
If you want more information please let me know..

You didn't tell us her weight. It seems to me that larger babies just take a little longer to crawl or walk... They need more muscles to move that lovely body around! :)

It sounds like she is moving fine in other ways, sitting up etc. She sounds healthy in other ways, figuring out how to get the food that you set out for her.

I have three kids and each baby is so different. What is "normal" for one baby is not the same for another baby.

If I were you I would ask myself if I was worried because it feels like something really is wrong? Or are you worried just because she isn't doing what the other babies are doing? (and therefore she won't be like all the other babies and her brain won't develop how it should and she won't be as smart as the other babies and all your friends will think you aren't a great mom and and and...) If it is this second choice then DON'T worry and make friends with that voice 'cause she is going to follow you around and bug you every chance you give her!!! Even after three kids that voice can get me. :)

Good luck!

Hi H.,
Will she stand or try and walk when you are holding her hands? My second son didn't really crawl he went straight to walking. I would check with you ped. Can she get on all fours? She should be getting off the ground by now. Good luck.

My second child didn't crawl. She sat and would swing her legs from one side to the other to move around if needed, then she started to walk at 15 months (was really quite funny). I was concerned for a while but she would let us stand her up and walk her around even though she wouldn't crawl. I don't think she learned to crawl until several months after she was walking. Part of this may have been that she had a sesitive stomach and usually when I put her on her tummy she would spit-up. I would suggest that if your daughter is willing to stand and walk with assistance then she should be fine.

don't worry....some babies just crawl later than others...i didn't walk til i was 18 months...and i never crawled until months after i started walking...when i saw another baby crawling....and i'm a perfectly competent walking adult....when your daughter is ready to move, she'll do it herself....crawling isn't something you teach...babies just do it naturally....if her doc says she's healthy then don't worry....enjoy not having to chase her all over the house and not having to barricade safe places as my daughter is now doing with my grand daughter!!

It wouldn't hurt for you to have her evaluated by a PT from Early On, this will ease your mind. But, I agree with the other Moms that it could be her size or she will skip this milestone. Furthermore, I worked as a SW in Early Intervention and never heard that a child has to crawl for their brain development.

I'm sure she'll be running into your arms before you know it!!:)

To be honest some kids don't crawl. Help her stand and walk her around. Walkers are good for that, once they learn they can bounce in them...they love it! Some kids go straight to walking and then decide to crawl. However, I would think that she would should be pulling herself up by now. You might want to ask the physician when you take her in. My middle son scooted around on his back, walked and then crawled.

My youngest daughter nevered craweled. Just got up and ran lol My youngest who is 17 months now..... he was diffcult so to speak. It seemed like he knew that we wanted him to do something. Like when we picked him to try to get him to walk with his, he would pick up his feet tottally. When we tried to get him to crawl forward he would crawl backwards. He didn't even walk until he was like 15 months old. He would crawl to where he wanted to go and then stand straight up without holding onto any thing. Then he would sit back down crawl to the next spot do the exact same thing. I think it was that he knew we expected him to do things. Like by us tryin to get him with a cookie or sayin come to daddy. He was smarter then we thought. As soon as we left him alone he decided to start walking and crawl by himself. Alot of times they learn by examples. Just by watching u do the normal daily things. Infact my son.... just recently started the whole want to follow mommy every where even the bathroom. yupee lol Anyways one day he took his diaper off in the kitchen and my daughter was moooooooommmm !!! Of course i thought it was messy. which it wasn't. But when i went in there he had the biggest smile on his face. I asked him What do u think ur a big boy. He shook his head yes. I said do u want to go potty like a big boy. He again shook his head yes. I was shocked. I took him into the bathroom and did the whole potty thing with him. He sat there so proud. By him going into the bathroom with me he learned the thought of potty. Weird i thought cause i didn't even start to potty train my girls until they were 2 years old. They learn alot by example is my theory. Give a little more time. Some learn at different levels. And sometimes they know more then u think. GOOD LUCK

You need to call Early On. She may have some muscle tone issues that need addressed. She should be crawling by now, and starting to stand independently and even walk.

My now 9 year old daughter never crawled. She sat on her bottom and scooted herself with her feet. She also never walked along the furniture, she would stand up in the middle of the room and walk (not until she was 14 months though). I have to agree we were around other kids her age alot and they were already walking, she watched them and copied what they did. If the doctors think she is physically fine then you should not worry. She will do it however and whenever she is ready.

H., every baby is soooo different, and the time that the peds say they should be crawling is an average, which means most kids are either on one side or the other. I know a little girl who didn't start crawling until she was at least 13 months old and wasn't walking until she was about 18 months, and she's turned out just fine. So perhaps her focus right now is on her verbal and fine motor skills and not her gross motor skills, and those will come later. I really encourage you to not worry about it and let her be who she is right now. ;)

Peace,
K.

Crawling is a very important step in a babys development and assuming that she is meeting all of the other developmental milestones, she will crawl when she is ready. The one thing that I would be concerned about is if she skips the crawling phase all together and goes straight to walking. Crawling creates pathways in the brain that cannot be created any other way so if she starts walking first, put her on the ground and encourage her to crawl for several months first.

Please know I don't want to be an alarmist, but my cousin and his wife had 2 boys who had certain development problems that were not of any concern to their pediatrician at all.

They had to take the oldest to be tested for Kindergarten readiness and the pediatrician on staff there took one look and suspected Muscular Distrophy imeadiately. They were referred for further testing and found both little boys had Duchens Muscular Distrophy which is passed on by the mother being the carrier. This affects mostly boys, but there are many types of muscle affecting diseases.

If a toddeler isn't crawling and not getting around by another way I'd be very concerned. Some who don't crawl, roll or scoot on their butts or something to get around. I would seek out a childrens hospital or a pediatric neurologist and don't waste precious time.

You're in my prayers and good luck.

H., I have learned that baby's walk when they want to. My oldest son walked just after he was a year old. I have an 8 month old son right now, and he started taking steps a few weeks ago! It is crazy! They do what they want to do and not what you want them to do. Believe me, I did not encourage my baby to start walking right now! My mom says, that I wouldn't walk or crawl no matter what she did. she did the line of cheerios around the house, etc, but nothing got me to move (I guess). She even had a specialist come to see if something was wrong with me because I just wanted to sit or be held and nothing inbetween. Fortunately, there was nothing wrong with me, I just wanted to do it when I was ready (almost 18 months old!) It will work out! Just you wait and see.

p.s. having them move all around the house isn't all it's cracked up to be! count your blessings.
