Hi Ladies,
I've already asked 2 different questions within the last week so I am surely nearing the end of my quota but I have one more question to ask.

Please remember that I am pregnant with my second baby due in December. About a month ago (this coming up Saturday) I fell out of a chair on my back patio. The chair literally cracked right at the seat. I have a feeling this was going to happen for awhile now...but anyhow, I fell right on my tail bone. At first it was bruised on the outside and it hurt when I would sit down and get up. Now, almost a month later it is still killing me and I just know it's gotten worse. The bruising went away on the outside but I feel close to crippled. Now I am keeping in mind that I am pregnant and pregnancy comes with its normal aches and pains. But this is something totally different from any sort of pregnancy pain. I am also keeping in mind that I have an 18 month old daughter that likes me to hold her and I REFUSE to stop doing that.

I told my OBGYN and he said if it was still bothering me to go to my family doctor. But here is my question. I have heard there is nothing that can be done for a broken tail bone. I am also going to assume that since I am pregnant they would not be able to give me an x-ray. So am I just wasting my time by going to the doctor for this? I am 28 years old and I am not kidding when I say I feel like an elderly woman. This pregnancy is becoming so tiresome because of my aching tail bone. If my tail bone did't hurt so bad this would be a great pregnancy. I feel great, my baby is definitely alive and very active. What should I do about this horrible pain in my back though?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I just wanted to say "THANKS" for all the wonderful replies and advice. Although I must admitt that now I am a little scared about what this is going to do when it's time to deliver my baby in December. I made an appointment with my family doctor for this Thursday so I should at least have some more information about it. Thanks Again ladies.

9/21/07......I went to the doctor yesterday and she said there is nothing that can be done for a broken or bruised tailbone since I am pregnant. So I have been taking Tylenol when I just can't stand the pain anymore and I am going to just make my way through this one day at a time. Some days are better than others. She did an ultra sound on the baby and said they baby looks great and she is not sitting directly on my tailbone. Which lead her to believe that I did in fact either bruise it very badly or broke it. I also asked her what the chances of a normal vaginal delivery were and she said since I am not having a hard time going (#2) then I should be just fine to have a vaginal delivery. Thanks again to all of you for you words of wisdom and advice. This is truly the best website on the internet. I haven't met a single one of you but I still feel like I have really good friends out there. So thanks again ladies!

Hi K.,

I would heartily agree with everyone on the chiropractor. It will help tremendously. I also fell when 8 months pregnant and broke my tailbone. We ended up scheduling a Caesarean section (which was my 2nd) because vaginal delivery would've been entirely too much pain.

I would also recommend a chiropractor who is established at seeing/working with pregnancies. My doctor is in Plano and her focus is pregnant women and children. Her name is Dr. Sue Hegel, D.C. and her number is ###-###-####.

Good luck!

K., I strongly suggest Dr. Cindy Haggerton in Hurst. She specializes in pregnant women and babies. Adjustments will help tremendously and she has a cold laser that causes rapid healing to damaged areas of the body. I would also suggest lots of a homeopathic remedy, Arnica Montana (30C) This remedy also heals traumatized areas of the body. You can take it under your tongue every 15-20 minutes. I'm so sorry for your pain. Give Dr. Cindy a call! ###-###-####.

I have broken my tail bone and there is nothing they can do. It will hurt for about a year but it will progressivly get better. You will have problems off and on forever. But it does get better. If you have a ring from the first pregnancy you can use that to sit on and it will help take the pressure off your tail bone.

Hi K.-I was in the same boat as you, I actually found out that I was 6wks. pregnant from my fall. I was skiing and had no idea that I was pregnant, or I wouldn't have been skiing. Anyway, had a accident on the last run of the day and I never knew that kind of pain before. Anyway, they believe that the tailbone was cracked(because couldn't do x-rays, since I passed the PG Test) The ONLY relief I ever had was from a heating pad, a donut pillow(which I was not ashamed to carry-I was hurting) and Tylenol. There was another pill-sorry I can't remember that they could give me for the inflamation and it truly seemed to help. Unfortunately-I had a tough time during delivery due to the accident because the baby "sat" on my tail bone and it was rough. I wish you the best and I definately encourage you to go to the doctor-you shouldn't suffer if there is help available.

K., I have done the same thing. I went to my chiro who basically told me there's nothing you can do medically to fix it and it will take some time to heal. He told me to make a horseshoe shaped pillow and take it everywhere I would sit - translates don't sit down without it. I was as crippled up as you are and that really, really helped, both with the pain and with the healing. Sit on it with the open part of the horseshoe where you're tailbone is. This relieves all pressure and helps it heal. Drive with it, too. Worked for me but took several months best I can recall. Will help when holding your daughter while sitting down. A sling might be useful in holding your daughter standing up. Suggestion: Go to Bree's Baby in Richardson - Campbell at Nantucket behind the CVS and beside CiCi's. She has all sorts of wraps and slings. Try them all on and see if one will take the pressure off of your back. I don't get a commission - but I know that some of the moms with general backaches say they are wondeful. Just an idea to consider. Oh yeah, she has one that will hold both baby and toddler. FYI

Good Luck.

I HIGHLY recommend my chiropractor, Dr Ken Parker. I'm sure he'd be able to help out with your tailbone and all other aspects of your pregnancy. I don't know how I would have made it through my two pregnancies without chiropractic care. He will only be in the office a few hours later this afternoon and then he won't be back in the office until Monday (but I bet his assistant will be there) because his wife had a baby yesterday.

When I was just a few weeks pregnant I was in a head-on collision and of course they took x-rays, even though I told them I was pregnant. My daughter is healthy and beautiful. I'm sure that a call to an orthopedic surgeon's office would result in all the answers that you need... Good luck!

Hi K.,

I am a chiropractor and I would strongly recommend getting in to chiropractor and getting an adjustment! When you fall on your coccyx "tail bone," it often results in the pelvis being jammed. This causes the sacroiliac joints to become irritated and the pelvis to shift out of place and that could be why you are having so much pain. It is totally safe to get adjusted while you are pregnant. In fact, it is highly recommended and it feels great! !! Getting adjusted throughout your pregnancy helps to keep the pelvis aligned. If your pelvis is rotated it is much harder to have a vaginal birth because it distorts the birth canal. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call me at ###-###-####. Thanks!

Hi K.,

I feel your pain, literally. I too fell on my tail bone when I was 6 months pregnant and though it is bruised. Come to find out, I had a cyst that popped up due to the fall called a pynidal synus. Sorry, the spelling may be incorrect. I would ask your family doctor to check for that too. It is a like a zit under your skin that is full of puss. I finally got to a point where I could not move without being in pain. I could not sit, couldn't go to the bath room, I couldn't stand for very long.
You may have just cracked your tail bone, which you can't fix. But you should ask about this pynidal synus to rule it out. It is horribly painful and no one understands unless they have had it.
I hope you can get some relief. Being pregnant, there are not many pain killers you can take.

Good luck during the rest of your pregnancy. We are due with our 2nd baby, a little girl, on Christmas Eve.

I would say go to the dr. You are in pain and that is bad enough in it self, but you need to find out why. Just be prepared to ask ?s about any tests they want to run and what affect they might have on your baby. They might be able to refer you to a Physical therapist, to help aleaviate some of the pain w/o drugs. It would not be a waste of time, at least you would know your options. Also, you need to find out if your injury can be affected by delivery of your baby. Better safe than sorry. Good Luck and I hope you get to feeling better.

Oh sweetie I know how you feel. I have broken mine 4 times! You are right, there is NOTHING you can do for a broken tailbone. Also, it takes forever to heal. Literally, it can take 2-3 months. The one thing you mentioned that really bothered me is that your OBGYN brushed you off onto your GP. While pregnant he is supposed to take care of you completely and I am sure your GP will agree with that. I have been in the OBGYN field a long time and I don't know of any OBGYN that would do that. I know if you are taking Tylenol that it is probably not helping. Neither that or Motrin helped me. I had to take prescription pain meds just so I could get around. They are absolutely safe to take in pregnancy. Please don't let anyone tell you they are not or try to scare you off taking them. You cannot continue to be in that much pain for what could be the duration of your pregnancy. Another thing, I don't want to alarm you but just so you are prepared, it is going to hurt terribly when you deliver. I have been through that with my tailbone. I would call your GP and just see what he says. Someone is going to have to treat you for this. Please let me know what happens.
M.
P.S. Be sure to get you a "donut" pillow from the pharmacy. It will help take the weight off your tailbone!

Hi K..
I bruised my tailbone snowboarding when I was 22. It bruised slightly on the outside but took about 6 months for severe pain to subside and 2 years for me to be able to sit for a long period of time without pain. I went to the Dr. and they actually checked my tailbone vaginally. The Dr. was able to feel somehow and know that it was not broken/cracked but just bruised. Getting an x-ray doesn't seem like it's worth it whether pregnant or not because there's nothing they can do if it is cracked.
I hope this helps and will be praying that your pain subsides very quickly.
Blessings,
A. M.

Drs. can do X-Rays during preg. if they feel a real need.

As for still being sore, your tailbone takes an extremely long time to heal if it was indeed broken.

Also, that area of your body can experience pain just from being preg (all the tendons in that area are stretching and hormones play a role also-I had tailbone pain with both of my kids) with no real bone trauma at all, so you may have just aggrivated a some-what existing condition.

Talk to your OB/OB Nurse again and ask him/her your questions before seeing a reg. doctor if you are worried about wasting your time or money, but remember that no amount of money is worh being miserable!!!

K.,

There's a possibility that you just bruised your tailbone. It could be that you shifted something out of joint--when I was pregnant with my daughter my tailbone was killing me especially when I was sitting all day. I went to see Dr. Nirij Mehta in Fort Worth ###-###-####)--he is a D.O. and can manipulate your back--he's trained to work with pregnant women. He was a LIFESAVER!!!! I'd go back when my tailbone would start acting up and I'd be better in a day. There are few people trained to work with pregnant women--I happen to work with his wife and he did that for her. I highly recommend him--I've told everyone I know. My pregnancy was made much easier because of him.

Sorry to hear that, I injured my tailbone years ago and went to a chiropractor who helped tremendously.
You may want to try that but I would definitely go to someone reputable. I see Dr. Burgess in Denton off Teasley. She is experienced and teaches classes at TWU for their chiropractic school. She is only $30 a visit if your insurance does not cover it. Good luck

If it is a broken or bruised tailbone, a coworker once told me that when she broke her tailbone, the only comfortable way she could sit was to sit on a pillow or cushion. Maybe that can provide some temporary relief until you go to your doctor. Good luck.

I fell on my tailbone when I was 7 months pregnant with my second child. My back was in such pain and of course I didn't really want to take the pain meds my OB had prescribed, since I was concerned about the long term effects on my baby. I had never been to one before, nor will most doctors recommend you to a chiropractor, but my aunt who worked in a doctor's office recommended it. Most doctors think they are quacks, but I know different. I went to a chiropractor who used the activator method. It is non evasive, unlike the manual manipulation of the spine. It won't hurt the baby and can provide some relief. You can find out more about the method by going to www.activator.com It even has a tab to help you find a doctor who use the method. My healthy normal daughter is now 15, but I would do it the same way, if I had it to do over again. I don't know how I would have made it through without him.

I have had experience with this one myself. I am 26 and I know exactly what you mean about feeling crippled. Actually to check for a broken tail bone they give you a rectal exam very seldom will an x-ray pick it up. Had I known that I wouldn't have bothered the Doctor AT ALL! I did know someone who had broken their tail bone that had is fuse. I don't know what that entailed or why they chose to go that route. that was not an option that was given to me. It is not like you can elevate it or stay off of it either. No amount of pain medication ever seemed to make it better either. I broke mine giving birth to my second. YIKES. It did not present any complications when I had my third. It took FOREVER and I do mean FOREVER for it to heal. On occasion it will still bother me. You can, although I never did, get a firm pillow that has a notch cut out of it that should help. I tired a donut pillow and that did nothing. I wish I had better news!

Hi K.,

Congrats on the pregnancy. I have a suggestion but I know there are always sceptics. Have you ever seen a Chiropractor. I have for 20+ years and chiropractic has gotten me through a lot. After being in a few severe auto accidents, I found myself suffering from agonizing migraines. I was a full time College student and a manager at a major clothing store. With the stress of that the headaches got worse. I went to several medical Doctors and specialist only to be told they found no reason for my headaches. Of course before leaving their office I received a script for more pain relief. I knew I wasn't imagining these headaches and the meds only made me float through the day. The headaches were still as severe. My Father suggested I go see his Chiropractor. Much like many others I was skeptical but since I had been tested, poked and prodded to no avail agreed. Within two weeks my headaches had begun to subside. Soon, I found myself without headaches without taking medication. I have been a believer ever since. I received treatment up until the day of delivery of all 3 of my kids. My pregnancies were really easy. No pain or nausea. My deliveries were fast The longest hard labor 3 hours with out medication. My babies weren't tiny either. My son was 9 1/2 lbs. Even he was only two pushes. I went home in pregrenancy jeans. I give much credit to the manipulations and care I received from my Chiropractor. We even convinced my OB/GYN to start seeing a Chiropractor. When we moved to Texas, I couldn't wait to find my new DR. Just like finding a medical Dr, you really have to be selective but I found a the best chiropractor in Frisco. When you tell him (make sure you do) you are expecting he of course will not take xrays. He explains everything to you and has no problems answering questions, especially to those a little nervous. Let me know if you are interested or have more question. I can set you up.

I would consult the doctor. They can't do x-ray but he may be able to feel or do ultrasound etc (So I have heard). At least your doctor may tell you some things that would be safe to do to releave some pain or he may not but my guess would be to try something before labor kicks in.
