Tailbone "Injury" (Not Really)

Not really looking for medical advice, more wondering if this has happened to anyone else and their experience. Clearly I need to get into the doc, but I've been putting it off due to crazy work schedule and a fear that they just won't find anything wrong (at least by not going, I harbor the hope of help/relief). Especially since the whole thing makes no sense ...

In April, I took a 1 time spinning class (free tryout). I did well - didn't fall on the seat or even sit down too hard. The seat on the bike was relatively comfortable and I didn't have any pain at all during the 60 minute class. A couple of hours later, I noticed that my tailbone was kind of sore - but so were my legs. I didn't think much of it. By that night, the tailbone pain was so bad I could barely walk (I probably would have went in that night the pain was so bad, but I was out of town at the time for an event and was able to take the spin class for free as part of the event). I iced/advil/rested for the evening. The next morning, the pain was more tolerable, so I figured I was on the "mend" - however, I still couldn't figure out why I even had pain with no "injury." Here we are, 7 months (in 3 days) later. I still have daily pain. I sit most of the day at a desk so that isn't helping. I still alternate heat/ice and take advil to help with the pain. I have ordered a number of "tailbone pillows" but so far they all make the pain much worse. I have another one being delivered today, so hopefully that will offer some relief.

Anyone have something similar happen? Ongoing tailbone pain for no real reason? I deserve the "you idiot, why haven't you gone to the doctor" comments. I'm psyching myself up to go - I really am!

Thanks in advance!

I have two different friends whose tailbones were out of alignment/broken/bent. They went to see a chiropractor, who did an internal adjustment which, I heard, was not fun but definitely therapeutic and alleviated the pain.

I have a birth defect called spondelolysthesis (probably not spelling that right). Basically your tail bone slips into your pelvis. I think it can also happen from an injury. I find it hard to believe you are dealing with this DAILY and haven't had it checked out (you're welcome). My grandparents used to take me to the chiropractor when I was little. Now I go on occasion and it helps me. Good luck.

I wish I could remember their user name because one of the regular posters here had the exact same thing happen from spinning. She never really came back to say what the outcome was though. If this is a normalish injury from spinning perhaps Google may be useful.

The worst thing is i went to a doctor and was told it is Coccydynia. This is a fancy word for tailbone pain.

1. I would request aqua therapy or physical therapy. Sometimes the pain may be felt in the tailbone, yet it is a nearby pinched nerve.
2. get a cushion with a cutout area while seated.

You might have bruised or dislocated it somehow.

My sister broke hers during childbirth. Sitting on a wedge type pillow helps take pressure off tailbone. Keeping regular (no constipation) helps relieve pressure in that area.

Hers still hurts sometimes - this is 20+ years later.

I had a friend fall on ice and to this day she has pain there at times. When you think about, it's a very hard area to let heal as you sit most of the day.

I'd sleep on my side (maybe get a body pillow) to take pressure off it at night. Hopefully they can help you when you go in.

Military Mom,

Welcome to mamapedia.

If you broke your tailbone there is nothing they can do for you. Unfortunately. It will take time to heal.

I broke my tail bone on my birthday in 2015 when I slipped on ice. I had to buy a "U" shaped pillow for my butt and it took weeks for it to heal.

I remember someone whose tailbone bent under. As I remember, someone pulled out so that it was straight or at the angle it should be. PERHAPS you pushed it out of place? You might be able to feel it's position. Definitely go to the doctor.
I'm always surprised at how on one people suffer before getting help. Chronic pain is debilitating. Consider how much energy being in pain takes. You've robbed yourself of time and energy better spent on happiness and productivity. YEs,.it's possible you won't get relief. IT's.much ore likely you can be helped. it's also possible that siting has ade the injury more serious.

NOT my capitalizati oon ,misspelled words or other gobble gook.

I know someone with similar ongoing tailbone pain. She's just started PT and is really tight in terms of flexibility. Apparently stretching might help so if you also are tight, you could try that.

How weird.... A question almost exactly like this about tailbone pain and spinning class was posted not too long ago. Are you by chance the same person?

Maybe will refrain from spinning class if you end up with injuries from it!!

I've had a broken tailbone and there isn't much they can do. PT is most likely best option once diagnosed.

I'll bet you pushed your tailbone into the nerves. That causes a great deal of pain.

This happened to me in 7th grade. A chiropractor went in and popped it back where it was supposed to be. An MD told me I could take aspirin every day or have it removed.

I'm glad I chose the chiropractor!
