Good Morning,
My daughter is turning 13 in a few weeks and wants to have a sleepover. Last year we did a mall scavenger hunt and then a sleep over. This year I am lost for ideas. Any ideas would be helpful.
Thank you
J.

American Idol is popular and new season is now starting. maybe have a karaoke contest American idol style? or like a talent show? Chaperones can be judges and each girl has time to prepare her act/song. Give everyone a prize, one for best song, most original, funniest, sweeetest, best dance, each person can win for something. It would a fun and video tape it, they will love to watch themselves in a few years when they're older! have fun

Hi J.,
When my daughter turned 13, what we did was take her and some girlfriends, I think 7 friends, out for pizza and then to a movie. After that, most of the girls got picked up but 3 or 4 came back to our house to sleep over, and the next day I took them to the local water park (my kids' birthdays are at the end of June). You could do dinner and a movie out, and then back to the house for a sleepover. At 13, I don't think they need so many structured activities planned at a sleepover, have some movies rented and snacks on hand, cards and mad libs, and they'll entertain themselves.

Maybe a manicure party? They can polish each others nails. Or a "fashion show", they can try on different clothes? It depends on what they are into, what are some of the things your daughter enjoys, maybe even a bowling party?

How about keeping them busy by having them prepare the food they'll eat. A friend did this a few months ago and the girls (age 11-13) loved it. They could help prepare everything needed to make their own tacos (chop onions, cook meat & season, chop tomatoes, lettuce, olives, grate cheese, etc.) Later on you could have a "make your own sundae" bar set up with ice cream and lots of toppings. Use paper plates/bowls for everything and clean up will be a snap. Shouldn't cost too much either. Good luck!

If you have even money for it you can do a hotel/motel slumber party- hopefully at one that has a pool, hottub, maybe even a resteraunt inside- normally you wont have to pay for additional rooms ( 1 or 2) and then if teh beds and couches dont fit enough people you pull out sleeping bags- it is a litle "grown up" and nice to get treated nice with a night of fun- some hotels even have manicure places, movie theaters, etc to entertain- and you would be there so it would be the same as being at the home except more activities and "glam" :)

that mall hunt sounds great.. what fun.. i just had a party for my daughter.. and we did a taco party 1st, i set up all small bowls.. cut up lettuce, shredded cheese, salsa, meat, hard shells, soft shells, sour cream... it was great.. that was at 6.. after that I had four stations set up... one for nails... the next make-up with lots of q-tips and i gave them each a mascara to take home.... i called an avon rep. and asked if I ordered something could i get a pack of small lipsticks.. she gave me 15 small lipsticks in all different colors... i let the girls do each others makeup.. and had another table set up with brushes and all kinds of hair ties, barretts... and they had so much fun.. i just let them do what they wanted... no real supervision.. they talked, laughed and had a great time... after that it was just hanging out near the sleeping bags.. i had some 17 magazines laying around and some teen vogue.. they loved it.. looking thru the mags.. and checking out all the clothes.. before bed i made them clean the make-up off.. with wet wipes.. next morning i made cinnamon rolls and had bagels. .... it was a lot of fun for all... or one day I called the clinique counter at macy's or lord and taylors.. and asked if they would do the girls make-up.. not overdone.. they did it pretty simple.. they looked great.. we took pictures.. all that clinque asks is that you buy something.. and they don't mind if it's like 6 girls.. if more you'll have to ask.. it cost me about 20 .. i bought something small... and they gave the girls small vials of perfume to take home..

Congratulations! Definitely a makeup/manicure party! Or how about a skin care party? Do facials at home with steam! How about make your own pizzas and/or sundaes? Your local pizza place should sell you the dough pretty inexpensively. Best of luck!

Hi J.,

My daughter turned 12 last month and we did the usual sleepover. I rented a couple of movies for the girls to watch but pretty much left it up to them what to do that night. They took turns doing each others nails different designs. You could also do indoor mini golf this time of year. We have also tied dyed shirts with friends in the past. Have fun!

Don't know if your daughter is getting into beauty stuff but you could get the great book Earthly Bodies Heavenly Hair and do some of the natural homemade beauty treatments with her friends.

How about a spa night, facials for the girls? You can get a Mary Kay consultant to come do make-up for free or hire a manicurist to do nails for a fee (I know there are services who come to your home out there) seems like a perfect idea for that age girl. Or you can just bake cookies or brownies together, make hot cocoa and popcorn and watch a movie. Keep it simple. Order pizza.

Dear J.,
Have you thought of Valentine's Day? Perhaps you could link something up to that. If you are comfortable with a scavenger hunt, maybe you could do one with a Valentine's theme.

My niece had a great party when she turned 12 last year...they actually did a fashion show!! All the girls brought and outfit or two, they actually had someone come do the girls hair (if you know someone this wouldn't be so pricey) and helped with their makeup and they actually rented a small stage/runway (a bit over the top but fun!) and the girls walked down and showed off their outfits....they also made home made pizza's....good luck!

why not get some material and have the girls make their own tie blankes. pick out some wild colors or something the moms telln you would go in their room they are simple to make..let me know if you hav enever heard of them and i can give ya directions..or get cheap white tee shirts with or with out a pocket..you sew the sleeves closed the bottom closed and stuff with batting then sew the neck closed..then have the girls decorate the way they wish with makers or paints. you could have them all sign each others pillow and date it and then they take home from there...my daughter did it last yr and loved it...hope you find some nice ideas to do..good luck
