I am having some problems with my blood pressure (my norm is about 150/110). My doc knows about it and just keeps putting me on more and more medicine. Last time I was put on more meds he told me "we don't know what if any side effects this has on pregnant women or the baby." That's a little scary to me. Not to mention that my bp still hasn't gone down any. I've been on the new meds for about a week. I'm very uncomfortable taking them. I'm wondering if it's ok to ask to have my labor induced. It seems like since the high bp is caused by the pregnancy that if I were to have the baby, the problem would be over. I am currently 37 weeks pregnant, so the baby would be fine. How do I convey my wishes to my doctor? Or am I overreacting?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your support and advice. I spoke with the doctor about my concerns. We had decided to just continue as is for right now. I have refused to take any more medicine than the one I'm currently on (Procardia). He doesn't want to consider inducing labor until I'm 38 weeks (only 5 more days!!) He felt that the risk due to inducing and possible c-section would be greater on the baby and myself. He suggessted that I monitor my bp at home and if it consistenly rises to get to the hospital. Thans again for all of you help and ecouragement!!!

If I were in your position I wouldn't be taking any meds that the Dr says they don't know what it can do. I can't even believe a Dr. would even tell you to take meds that could possible harm your baby. I would ask another Dr. what they think. As for asking the Dr. to ind. you, just ask.. See what they say. Best of luck to you!

You need to discuss this with your doctor... or get a second opinion. If the meds are not lowering your BP, there is no point in taking them IMO, especially with the unknown side effects.

Induction can be stressful on your body which could raise your blood pressure further (I was induced with one birth and swore never again).

I would consider discussing this thoroughly with your care provider. So your BP was high before pg and it's getting higher or staying the same. I've read some information suggesting that you need to watch your norm, not the average norm to know if you are having BP problems during pg.

Feel free to talk with your Dr. about inducing labor. You are close enough that s/he should considered it. I am surprised that they did not suggest it to you. I had pretty regual bp throughout most of my pregnancy but towards the last 3-4 weeks or so it shot up. One of the options that was suggested to me after many visits of fetal monitoring was in fact induction. Luckily for me though the high bp was a sign that it was almost time for my son.

I would just be honest and ask the doctor. However, I will warn you, most doctors will not even induce until you are two weeks over due. If the doctor is confident that the baby's weight is up to par and ready for delivery that's one thing, but I was 5 days late, induced, and she was only 6 lb. 6 oz. Much smaller than expected! If the meds aren't working, I would contact the doctor and tell him they aren't working so you would rather not take them at all. Are there alternatives to helping reduce your bp? Bedrest? That is often suggested by doctors to help reduce stress and bp problems. Good luck with your delivery and try to relax! :)

P.S. Like Meagan wrote, I was induced and my daughter's heart rate began to drop each time I had a contraction. I also ended up having to have a c-section.

Call your doctor today and tell hiim/her you're uncomfortable taking the medecines and want to discuss inducing this week. I'm sure your doctor is very good, but they are always concerned about delivering early and some don't like to induce. Maybe all he's waiting for is for you to bring it up. You have to be an advocate for yourself and your baby. If your doctor won't induce, insist on a complete explanation of why and be sure you understand. Don't feel bad about pushing. Your doctor is YOUR EMPLOYEE; you're paying him to work for you. You can ask anything you want to ask. Good luck!

P.S. -- I was induced twice. Once at 38.5 weeks for convenience sake (not as flippant as that sounds -- just wanted you to know it was not for medical reasons.) The other time for medical reasons with twins at 35 weeks 4 days.

I would definitely ask the doctor about this option. It is your right to be very informed about your situation. I have 3 babies and from what I know they will probably suggest you wait it out unless it becomes really dangerous for you or the baby. But please ask questions that's how we make good decisions.

Hi, I had the same problem when I was pregnant. I just had my first baby 5 months ago and the only problem I had throughout my whole pregnancy was my blood pressure. I have never had high blood pressure until I got pregnant. I don't think you are overreacting at all. I was induced at 35 weeks b/c of my blood pressure. It was so high that it had cut off the air to my son and he had stopped growing. Once I had him I had to stay in the hospital for 5 days b/c of my b.p. but after I left I have yet to have any problems with it. I think you should talk to your doctor about your concerns. I would ask to do an ultrasound to measure the baby's organs and body parts to make sure they are still growing and are at the right measurments. If you're already 37 weeks, it couldn't harm the baby to go ahead and be delivered. Better to be safe than sorry. I hope I could help & I hope everything goes well! Congratultions on the little girl!!

okay.... 1st off, You are NOT over reacting. You shouldn't feel uncomfortable talking about anything with your ob/gyn when it comes to your wishes or concerns about your baby!I can't believe that your doc hasn't talked to you about induction. I also find it really hard to believe that your doc would give you meds to take if he/she didn't know what the effects on the baby might be. I would not feel comfortable taking the medications. I had problems with my BP when I was around 38 weeks as well. My doctor put me on complete bed rest. It helped most of the time. She did eventually decide to induce me because of the problems. I was induced on my due date. It was not a easy birth, but my daughter weighed over 7lbs. and was beautiful and healthy.
There are risks to induction. You should go and read up on induction and the risks and reasons before talking to your doctor. Also if you aren't comfortable talking to your doc, find someone else... Not many ob's are going to take you as a patient when you are this far along, but they may talk to you.
Good luck, stay in bed as much as possible and go talk to your doctor. I will be praying for the best!

It is hard to say this because of your health but I would stop taking the pills. I would not be happy with the Dr. statement on side effects.
I was with my sister during a very difficult ordeal with her baby. It wasn't for BP meds but we believe the problems that her first daughter experienced were caused by meds that she had taken. Her daughter has since passed away and I don't tell you this to scare you just to make sure you are aware of how serious side effects can be to your baby.
Either try to find a different Dr., different meds, or find a GOOD answer to the side effect question.

i had high BP with both my sons, and i had to be induced with my first son because it was 150/110. i was feeling terrible, and on top of that, i went past my due date... which is not fun. i never took any meds, because i didnt want to have side effects that would make me feel worse than i did already. i am totally suprised that your doc hasnt induced you yet. mine wanted to but i wanted to try to have cameron on my own. your problem would be over once the baby is born. mine was. i would definitely ask.

With my first son I was induced at 36 weeks due to high blood pressure. It was a very smart idea on my doctor's choice because high blood pressure can cause so many more things to happen - if you are that far along they can check the babies lungs and make sure he or she is ready to come out a little early. Good luck.

Well I just had a baby six months ago and I was induced. Im not sure what your doctor is telling you but my doctor told me that we shouldn't induce any earlier than 38 weeks so that the baby is fully developed and it is safe for them. My advice to you is that you really do not want to be induced unless you have to. You want your baby to spend as much time in the womb. Now if your blood pressure is causing harm to the baby that is a different story but I would get a second opinion on the medicine they have you on.

Okay, I had the same problem, but my doctor wouldn't put me on medicine due the the baby. I know that every doctor is different. The only thing my ob did for me is order bed rest and hospital stays alot. My son is now 1 yrs old. I would tell the doctor that you would like to be induced. He/she shouldn't have a problem with that. My ob told me to pick a day and she would induce me because of my blood pressure, but I went in there for my last check up a few days before being induced and my blood pressure was way too high that she send me to the hospital that night. I know if your blood pressure gets too high you can go into labor. I am sure he won't have a problem with that. I will tell you that it's not fun being induced. I was in labor for 2 days straight with nothing to eat. Then when I was able to start pushing I tried for 2 hours and he got stuck and we had to have an emergency c section. If they don't agree with you about being induced tell him you can't take it anymore and you would feel more comfortable being induced. Good luck.
