This last weekend my 8 month old daughter had a low grade fever all weekend. She felt hot to the touch but she never went above 101 degrees. Then on Tuesday she no longer had the fever but she broke out in a rash all over her face, neck, head, torso, diaper area. It is Thursday and she still has the rash. Her eyes where red and a little swollen around that area. She is not fussy, she is acting normal. She had a little congestion but that's it. I took her to the ER and then her pediatrician and they just said it's probably a virus of some kind but they were pretty vague and they said this is pretty normal. I havn't introduced new food and she has no allergies that I know of. I am a new mom so this is all a new experience for me. Have any of you moms had this happen?

What can I do next?

It is probably roseola. My children have had it. My younger sister used to get it a lot. My son just had it last week. It lasted for about a day and went away.

Go back to her doctor and push for him to do a blood test and check for viruses and other things that could cause the rash. My little girl had something like that and we didn't know to ask the doctor about a blood test or else we could have stopped her from getting sicker. I doubt that your child has anything that serious though but it's better to be safe than sorry.

With my oldest, he always broke out in a rash after a fever. It always took a week or two for it to go away. Nothing you can really do about it so don't worry!!

I have run into this before it should take about 1 week to go away maybe longer. The way you can seperate a fever rash from some kind of other rash is to take your finger and rub across it and if the redness goes away and comes right back it is nothing to be worried about but if when you rub your finger across it and it does not go away you might need to take her to her peditrician.

This has happened to my son, the rash eventually went away and he was fine. He also got a virus one time that after the fever broke, his hands and feet peeled. It was crazy.

My son actually did the same thing on his first birthday and it lasted nearly a week. I took him to the emergency room since it was a Sunday night and they too along with his pediatrician said it was viral. It is a vague diagnosis but it's one that just has to run its course. Importantly my son also has blisters all over his tongue too and screamed constantly because of not being able to eat or even take his paci. It was scary and heartbreaking. You feel helpless. I soaked him in a warm bath with baking soda, maybe a cup full in a big bath or a half a cup full in a baby bath tub. I used orajel for his mouth to help him get a bottle down. And gave him Motrin, not Tylenol since Motrin last longer to help with his fever and pains. Please email me if you have any other questions. Hope I helped calm you. ____@____.com

Hey J.,
It's called roseola. You can google it, but it's a virus that causes a fever, followed by a rash. It is harmless and will go away on its own. My son had it about a month ago, and we associated the fever with teething, then it went away, thought we were all clear, then he broke out in a terrible rash. We took him to the dr. and that was the diagnosis. After his appointment, we went to lunch and our waitress called it right away. Apparently it's pretty common and is nothing to worry about. The rash will be gone in a few days. Sorry your ER people weren't too specific. I was so relived when the dr. told us exactly what it was. Good luck!!

My daughter had a fever similar to the one you are describing and when it broke she had a rash all over her upper torso and part of her face. There was a virus going around her daycare and a lot of the kids became infected. It does clear up on its own and if it becomes uncomfortable they can give you medicine to help keep her comfortable but nothing to treat the virus. My daughter's took about 2 1/2 weeks to clear up. It sounds like the same thing, although I cannot remember the name I am thinking it was Thrush, but I may be wrong.

My son has done this several times. What usually happens is he gets a fever and when the fever goes away the rash appears. I have taken him to the dr and he says the same thing your dr told you. It's just a virus that has to run it's course. I know it sounds vague and if you are like me you like to know exactly what is going on. But my son's is usually gone in a couple of days. Hope that helps

If she had the fever for 3 days, then broke out in a rash all over after the fever broke, it is probably roseola (3 day measels). it is usually only contagious before and during the fever. my daughter had this when she 10 months old. it just has to run its course.
