Yes-It is the foremost of my new year resolutions-- as has been in the last 5 years.Just 9 days into 2008,I have already broken it by binging over the weekend.
I would be interested to know how many women have made a New Years Resolution to Lose Weight? Also, if you have made this resolution previous years. If so, do you continue to hit a wall? Your answers will be very helpful to me.
E. Anna
Thank you to all who have responded. I have friends who make this resolution every year, some every month and I will tell you the 2 women who have been successful were part of a larger community for support. Only one has maintained the loss.
"Resolve To Evolve" and live the life you have imagined.

Yes, and yes! :-)
I've been working out consistently since October and have lost almost 10lbs. I think this is the first holiday season that I've actually lost weight!
Anna, I cannot say this enough... DRINK LEMON WATER.. first thing, every morning. Just cut a lemon wedge, squeeze it in your water and drink up. The liver gets a good "kick-start" in digestion thus making your other digestive organs start to work. Before that cup of coffee, before your breakfast, drink a nice cool glass of lemon water. I keep a pitcher of it in my fridge. Also, when doing laundry, squat to get those clothes out of the dryer. I get a great workout just from folding the clothes directly out of the dryer. I'm a nutritionist and after 4 children and being 34, can still hold the PT excellence badge for the Army. Many people come into my husbands office who are overweight and I'll get them doing things like the afore mentioned as well as a good core fitness workout.
Also the human body absorbs way too much acid. Not enough alkalinic foods to balance out that acidity so eat a LOT if green foods. Sprouts, broccoli, raw baby spinach, ( tasted NOTHING like the froxen or canned spinach mom used to buy when we were young) This is a wonderful snack. STAY AWAY FROM PROCESSED FOODS.. even lean cuisines and other frozen meals. Make a good veggie wrap. They sell tortillas that are even ranch flavored, whole grains are a wonderful thing too. White bread is trash. Potato chips, even baked is trash. Food has to be "living" in order to allow the nutrients to hit your system. Fresh is totally the way to go.
Good luck and I hope I helped.

OK. I just scrolled down and read a few more responses.. Here are some things you all can do to help reach this goal as well as what I've read.. Put up a clothes line. In the warm months you will not BELIEVE how much you burn off just from carrying that laundry out and hanging it, taking it down, bringing it back in, etc.. also it saves on electricity, and sometimes gas. ( for those who have a gas dryer) If you need something, try to make it yourself. Go out and gather stuff from nature to decorate your home. It's a GREAT way to live, from what I understand " in style" now to decorate "green" and it will get you and your kids out and walking in different places etc.. to find that right piece to fit in that little display basket. Don't bend over to pick something up.. always squat. Every little bit helps. The more you move, the more you'll lose. Try to make your front yard the most beautiful on the block. Install a new herb garden, a new flower bed, that little pond you've always wanted.. etc... you'll feel it on your body as well as see the fruits of your hard work every time you drive up.
Going to the gym to me is,, well,, BORING.. straight up. I don't like classes to learn how to work out. But the tae bo tapes and after you know that routine a bit, turn the TV volume down and put on your favorite workout music. If you want to do this while baby naps, wear headphones.. Just remember to pop one of those off every now and then to keep half-ear out for the baby. Teach your children a few basic yoga poses.. It benefits you both. SO much we can do.. A regular routine, standing in a sweat box running on a treadmill, paying a lot of money for a "special" diet, counting points, etc.. never worked for me and my sister tried all this and stopped.. everyone does.. why?? It's all a gimmick.. Bottom line. Follow a FRESH diet. MOVE as much as possible. Even in you just squat to pick something up every couple hours,, your body will thank you for it.
Hi, E..
My resolution isn't to lose weight, but to continue to work out. I gained 50 pounds with my first daughter (almost all within the last 3 months of the pregnancy--bed rest plus depression/anxiety disorder put me over the edge). I then had to have an emergency C-section, and for that first year my back was worthless. I couldn't even fold laundry without having spasms, much less sweep or mop. I'm a writer, too (freelance), so I don't get much workout during my day, either.
So last year I decided to use our easy elliptical for 15-20 minutes a day. I haven't lost any weight, but I haven't gained any, either.
BUT I've upped it to 2 miles/40 minutes daily on the elliptical this year and I have NO back problems, no problem "running" on it for certain periods of time, and am eating WAY better than I did last year. I'm definitely healthier, even though I still have 80 pounds to lose in order to achieve my "ideal weight". I'll be increasing my workout more this year.
Basically, I want to have another child but I don't want to do it in this condition. I don't mind being plus-sized, and I'm not looking to lose all those 80 pounds, but losing that 50? That's what I'm after. Also, I want my arms back. ;-)
Yes losing weight has been one of my resolutions many different years and I always seem to hit that wall you were talking about. I didn't make that resolution this year, although I still need to lose weight, because I don't see the point in setting myself up for another broken resolution. I do need and want to lose weight and I do pretty good for the first five or so pounds but then I just gain it all back. If you have any suggestions or if you have any secrets or tricks that have worked for you please do let me know.
Thank you. E.
It seems being healthy is always what i aim for. I think that i am for the most part. but witha broken back from 3 yrs ago doc keep saying wieght loss will help the pain. i feel like i am a dead end. I joined the gym, have plans to start mon evening and plan to go to weight watchers on tuesday, but in the back of my ind i think i can't do it. leaving me feel powerless.
NO - I resolved to work on my belly - doing crunches more often! I already feel thinner!!!!! YAY!
My resolution to lose weight was in 2005. I lost 24 pounds and have managed to keep it off. I joined Weight Watchers. It changed the way I eat, how I eat and what I eat. It is a life style change.
I am an elementary school principal, so "dieting" was questionable at best. With Weight Watchers, I have been able to maintain what was lost through knowing what to snack on if I don't happen to get lunch!
I did not make it a resolution this year but I have in years past. For me the reason that I have not been successful is that I feel guilty taking time for myself. I have always had to work full time and my kids have been at a sitter while I work, so I feel so guilty to leave them when I'm home to work out. (Not only guilty, but I want to have the time with them too.) By the time I put them to bed I'm pooped and I still have cleaning to do and papers to grade for work. I know it is said that you have to make time, but I just can't figure out where. (I get up at 4:30 to get ready for work, so there's no way to get up any earlier...I'd never make it through the day.) I would love some advice if you have any to offer on the subject. :) Good luck with your research.

Yes, that would be me. This year I even got a head start and asked for fitness equipment for Christmas. In years past I have lost 50 lbs, 71 lbs, and even struggled with an eating disorder to gain it ALL back plus. This year I joined Weight Watchers online program. The first three months cost $65.00 up front. I could only hope that the commitment to my check book reflects in my commitment to lose.
Good Luck, E..

Almost every year since having my girls I make this resolution. I have a goal weight at hand...155/150..just depends. I have hit that goal weight before, but let myself go after March of this past year. My husband and I were trying to have a baby and I just put exercise to rest...and now I'm regreting it. 20lbs later!!! I am getting myself back on track. We have a treadmill, weight bench and dumb bells (3# and 5# for me)...oh, and an exercise ball (abs rock on those!). I am down 4lbs already and still trying hard! Gave up buying pop (only when we go out) and drink mostly water and milk now. I also will not give up my morning coffee..lol. But, other than that, I'm doing my best to keep this resolution a good one!
I would love to lose weight, but my major problem is will power.
When I go to bed at night I have all these great plans for losing the weight, but the next day I am back to my same ruteen. My doctor even put me on a pill to help curb my eating habits and it works the only problem is that when I see something I really really like I will eat it!
I would like to excercize but just don't have the modivation any suggestions . gaining weight and losing control of my life.
No. I've made so many resolutions, new year's and otherwise, to lose weight and neglected them that I've stopped making resolutions. That way I don't have anything to regret and fail at.
Amazingly, without the resolution I continue to eat Toblerone and Reese's....could chocolate be fattening? nah......at least that's what I'll continue to tell myself. LOL
Hi E.:
I did make a resolution to lose weight this year. I also made the resolution last year. I didn't go into it with the gusto that I would have liked but I did end 2007 40 lbs lighter than I started. Walls always come up but I've vowed to go around them. I don't care how big the obstacle seems to be. Most of the time the obstacle is just my excuses. But no more...This year I WILL lose atleast 80 lbs.
I have made that resolution and I have really tried to lose the weight. Right now I am in college and I have arthritis in my back which makes it very hard at times to do anything. I also have 3 kids and an husband and it feels like there is never enough time in the day to do what I need to do for me. Let alone try to do exercies to lose the weight. If you have suggestions, please please please let me know. S. Baker/Lima, Ohio
Yes! Yes! Yes! It is my NYR every year. I had a baby in '06 and had about 50 lbs. to lose after. I joined an awesome women's program in New Albany called the Ultimate U and lost all of my weight (35 lbs. through the program). I had lost about 15 lbs. of the weight naturally after giving birth. The structure of the program was comprehensive and it was easy to stay on track. However, I have gained about 10 lbs. since it ended and am feeling uncomfortable in my body and clothing!! So, yes....my NYR is to lose 15 lbs because I still had a little weight left to lose when the program ended in May.
Yes, I'm trying to lose weight. It's very hard this is my first time ever having to diet. However, after having two children your body changes (A-LOT)
I lost the weight after my first child without dieting. I've not been so lucky after my second child who is now 15 mo.
I'm thinking of doing Weight Watchers but haven't made it to a meeting yet. Some friends have been successful with it. I'm keeping a diary of what I eat and how I feel when I eat it. I tend to eat when I'm bored. I also went through postpartum depression and all I did was eat.
I'm also trying to exercise everyday:)
My New Years Resolution is less about the actual weight loss, and more about the health aspects. In the past I have made a straight weight loss resolution, and fail with lack of a plan. This year my first new years resolution is to work out 3 times a week. I use to be a runner, but since the birth of my son while being a single mom, I have lacked the ability to run. I didn't have money for a jogging stroller and didn't like any stroller I recieved so I just stopped. My son use to go to a center where I went to college, and therefore the only break I had from him was when I was in class or he was at my mom's for me to work. Now he is in a regular preschool 3 days a week, and I'm working full time as a nurse at night, I feel I can focus myself into getting 3 30 minute workouts in a week. By beginning to work out I hope to ultimately loss 10 lbs. This will get me to the weight I was when I left the hospital after having my son. I am also limiting my pop drinking to work and eating out (which I don't do often), and increasing my water intake. With a plan I hope to succeed.
Hi E.! Yes, I do make that resolution every year and most years I don't stick w/it. But last year, at the end of October, before the new year, I decided I was a weight I couldn't take! I'd never been that heavy in my entire life! So I joined WW's. I'd done ww's before and it worked, then I did it other times and it didn't. But I went during the holidays and started to lose. I lost 41 pounds in 2007 and have 25-30 more to go. My resolution is to reach my goal this year. Exercise has never been a problem of mine it's the eating. It seemed after the age of 35 I started to slowly gain. Refused to see it till it got too late. Now I'm on my way back to my old self and I'm so happy about it!

I have made a resolution to lose weight...AGAIN! I have struggled with weight from the moment I was born! I was always active as a child, but I never really did anything about trying to shed access weight until I transitioned from 8th grade to High School. My problem is that I am an emotional eater, and I love "junk". I managed to get down to a healthy weight and maintained it throughout college. When I started into the working world however, I quickly started to gain, and gained A LOT! I ended up having gastric bypass surgery in 2002, and quickly got back down to a healthy weight. I 2006, I had my first child, gained @ 50, and cannot lose it. Now, as my pattern of up and down with weight continues, I am continuing to gain. It is truly the most disheartning thing. I wrote a couple of months ago to see if anyone knew of any barriatric support groups in the area, but only got 1 response. I know that if I could just get motivated to exercise, it would help greatly, it just takes so much energy even thinking about it :( I used to belong to Curves, which I loved, but do to my current financial situation, I just can't afford it. It was great, tho, it gave me a great workout in just 30 minutes. I always felt good after I left there, and hope that I can return soon. Well, thanks for letting me vent!!
Hi E.! To give you a little idea of my stature - I am 4 foot 10 and before I had my daughter I weighed 110 lbs. When I gave birth I was pushing 180 lbs! Needless to say, that was NOT all baby - I went from a size 3 pants to a size 14!
At the end of September 2007 our work offered us a Weight Watchers program, so I gladly signed up. Since the end of September, I have lost over 20 pounds and have brought myself down from a size 14 to a size 7.
I have tried many diets (low carb & the like), and have never had the success that I've had with Weight Watchers. They teach you to change your eating habits for life - and in my opinion it's a really easy plan to follow! You don't have to buy Weight Watchers food to lose the weight, either (and you can still have whatever you want, but in moderation). And I think the membership fee is only $11 or $12 a week.
No matter what plan you decide to follow, I wish you the best of luck in losing the weight - you can do it! :O)
