Hi I need some information / direction.

I have a 3 years old, soon to be 4 and I know that this year he will be able to attend preschool. What I want to know is if Public school is also free for preschool. How do I find which school my son can attend.

Thank you

What can I do next?

I'm an HISD teacher. Free HISD pre-k is only available for children who meet certain criteria such as: homeless (which includes children in foster care), ESL, etc. There are tuition-based pre-k programs (I believe Garden Oaks has one...last time I checked it was $440/mo.).

Some charter schools offer free PK3/PK4. My son attended Houston Heights Learning Academy (in the Heights) when he was 3. It was completely free (and we didn't have to meet any 'special' criteria). I believe the Varnett School has PK3.

In what area do you live?

While there are a few pre-k 3 programs in public schools locally, you can see if your child qualifies by calling 211 or ###-###-#### and asking about the admission requirements, the locations, and getting the contact information for your area schools.

It depends what school district you are in. We are in Katy ISD, and public PreK is only free for certain families...English as a 2nd language, economically disadvantaged, and children with some sort of disability. So, for the vast majority of children where I live, public preschool is not available. I believe PreK is free to all living in the Spring Branch school district. I'm not sure about Houston ISD. So, you will have to contact your district, or go online and check their website, to find out what is available. You should also be able to find out on the district website what Elementary school your child will attend. Good luck!
