It's normal for their cycles to be abnormal for the first year. Be aware that she may have heavier periods when she has longer times between them. Aleve can help with that.
Look for some books that will provide you both with some information. (Check Borders, because they are going out of business)
Also, girls usually follow their mother for menses and pregnancies, so what were yours like early on?
When she complains about the mild cramps & headaches do you (or she) notice a dark, maybe brownish discharge in her underwear? If so, that is her menses. Her hormones are like a loose power line looking for it's connection. As her hormones mature and become more regular so should her cycles. If, after a few years they don't or she has debilitating menses, then have her evaluated. One of the things that I learned from using Bio-Identical hormone replacement, it that it can also be used to for menstruating females with dysfunctional menses.
