Is Weight Gain One of the Pleasant Changes We Go Through with Peri-menopause?

I'm 43 and don't know what to expect when menopause comes. I've heard of hot flashes but do you typically gain weight before or during menopause?

What can I do next?

It can be weight gain but what I've noticed (I'm 47) is more of an odd "shifting around" of the existing weight....nice, huh? It's like the waistline gets thicker and less defined (not that it was ever extremely defined-lol) google "peri-menopause" for a nice long list of what to expect....fun times.

Oh yeah you can before during perimenopause. I'm 46 and going through "the change". lol
Fluctuations with your hormones can do just about anything to you.
Lay off the processed carbs helps a bunch. Processed sugar, white breads and rice, potatoes and corn.
I'm using a natural progesterone cream and it's saved my life. Ha.
Really I'm doing so much better than before when this first started. Only way to tell that something going on is that my cycles are SO wrong.
Best advice I can get you is that you are doing already. RESEARCH now before symptoms start.
Best Regards,
C.

For many women, before AND during. It's harder to keep your weight down because…

…our metabolism tends to slow down, so what we eat "sticks" better…
…energy levels gradually drop, resulting in less total activity during the day…
… the loss of muscle that most of us experience as we age has a cumulative effect on our ability to burn calories…
…we can become a bit more fragile and start experiencing injuries from excercise we were always able to do before…
…hormonal changes tend to cause the redistribution of weight on most women's bodies, resulting in a less-defined waistline…
…digestive changes may make us less able to metabolize all the nutrients we eat, which can result in cravings…

sigh…

Your metabolism can slow, which means you can't eat quite as much. Other than that, you won't just automatically gain weight. Just eat a little less and/or exercise more.

I cut out almost all processed foods, eat 90% organically and take whole psyllium powder almost daily.

It's helped a lot, although as I write this I have one wicked headache going on (thank you mother nature). I had hot flashes Sunday/Sunday night to beat the band.....I finally gave up and opened a window even though it was about 15 degrees outside.

I'm almost 47 so I'd say the best you can do is watch what you put in your body and get outside and walk (at least).

I have not had hot flashes.

I have not gained weight. I walk for one hour and 15 min. every afternoon, and I feel great. My doctor says that exercise is the KEY! Good luck!

Yes, that is one of the tings that happen when you near the big "M". I would love to tell you how I lost 25 lbs. without even trying to and not changing my eating habits. Little did I know that I was in the throws of the big "M" even my Ob/GYN didn't know it. I had none of the symptoms due to my discovery. I am sending you my contact info in a PM.

No.

I am on HRT due to complete hysterectomy 9 yrs ago and I was told about the weight gain that just happens. I said NOT TO ME.... I continue to take care of my body, eat what I want in moderation and be smart. Granted, I've never had a weight issue thanks to good genes and good habits.

So, no you do not gain weight unless you allow yourself to do so.
