ISO Pediatrician Referrals -- Bfing-friendly, Vaccine-friendly, Etc.

Hi! I'm new to Portland and am looking for pediatrician referrals for my 16-month-old daughter. We live in NE, but it is more important to find the right pediatrician than a nearby location. I am looking for a doctor that is basically AP-friendly: extended breastfeeding (and tandem), alternative vaccine schedules, cosleeping, etc. I realize that an ND would probably be a perfect fit, except for the fact that our insurance will not cover NDs, and my hubby prefers an MD. Can anyone recommend a pediatrician or family doctor/practice that is AP/natural-friendly? Thanks so much!

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for all of the recommendations! I have heard a lot about Monique, but decided to try out Dr. Joel first, since he was in my neighborhood, and I am so thrilled! I am really looking forward to a long partnership with Dr. Joel in maintaining the health of my children. Thanks again!

Hi M.,

I live in Tualatin, but many of my customers and AP friends have highly recommended Dr. Monique Pritchard over at Sellwood Medical Clinic. If you need more referrals, send me a quick note. I have a spreadsheet with a bunch of doctor's that are BF friendly, vaccine-friendly, co-sleeping friendly, etc, etc.

Sincerely,
A.

I have to chime in with the recommendation for Dr. Pritchard at the Sellwood Medical Clinic. I have been searching for a doctor like her since my son was born 3 years ago! We had our first appointment with her about a month ago and she is exactly what I want in a doctor. Smart, kind, practical and very open to AP ideas. She offered that they can do the measles, mumps, rubella vaccines seperately without me even asking. (I asked my previous doctor if they could do the MMR this way, and she checked into it but because of they way they purchase them, they could not do it.) BTW, I noticed she was also listed in Portland Monthly's 2008 "Top Docs" issue for Pedatrics

We see a family nurse practioner at the Rosewood Family Health Center at 92nd and Powell. I live in NE too and its fairly easy to get there, I just jump on the 205 to Powell. Our ped's name is Melissa Lynett. She is great. She's young and open-minded. We don't vaccinate and I bfed my boys for almost 3 years each. I've gotten some wierd/ uneducated comments from some peds that we've seen in the past about extended bf but not from Melissa. She's also open to that fact that we use homeopathy and alternative care (chiropractor).
Good luck finding someone for your family!

We love, love, love Dr. Monique Pritchard over at Sellwood Medical Clinic. She is an MD and takes all kinds of insurance. I am an AP-mom and Dr. P supports AP practices. She did a delayed vaccination schedule with us, but supports families with whatever they are comfortable with.

Best of luck to you and your family. Welcome to Oregon and congrats and best wishes with #2 on the way!

I just found a pediatrician for my 2 month old. He works in conjunction with a naturopath and is hoping to form a coop with a bunch of practitioners in his clinic so that his patients can receive alternative services for a fraction of the price and without insurance. I love his style and sounds like exactly what you are looking for. AND he is in NE. It is a regular $15 copay through my insurance, but the naturopath is separate.

Here is the website: www.drjoelsclinic.com ....His name is Dr. Joel Amundson and he works at the Beaumont Health Clinic on Fremont.

Good Luck!

We love our ped, Dr. Monique Pritchard at Sellwood Medical Clinic. She is very AP-oriented, leaves shots up to us, and is just wonderful with our wee kiddo. Plus, she often has more "natural" suggestions for what ails him. I like that she assumes the best about her families, and expects that we would know what's up with our little boy (in other words, she isn't always busy 'telling us about' our kid, like we don't know what we're doing.). Overall, I highly recommend her -- it took us a while to find her. She also has a new doc starting at her clinic soon, so if Dr. Pritchard is busy, consider trying out a new person. I have a feeling the docs are a good match in what's important in their patient care.

Best wishes on your hunt.

Hi, you are listed as originating from Salt Lake City. If this is correct, do you know of any vaccine-friendly pediatricians in Salt Lake City? We just moved here. Many thanks for any help!

I absolutely recommend OHSU for pediatric care. as an academic center, they are up on the latest empirical research, and have been great with both of our daughters. working with residents is fabulous, they are well trained and very interpersonal. as far as vaccine-friendly, not sure exactly what you mean, however, if you mean are they the most informed, they absolutely are. as a physician, what that means to me is that the latest research and the AAP recommendations are held to standard, and children are vaccinated properly. if they varied from this, they wouldn't be the best.

Yes, yes, yes! I discovered Southwest Family Physicians (in Tigard, OR) when I was expecting with our second baby and I've been so pleased with them for all of the criteria you listed. Cynthia Gulick is the one who started the practice. All the doctors/midwives/physician's assistants in their practice are very AP friendly. Dr. Gulick herself breastfed all 4 of her children until aprox. the age of 3 (from what I recall her telling me).
