Itchy Eyes

My 6 mo old girl rubs her eyes constantly. It's more common when she's tired but she also rubs her eyes after a nap or long sleep and she will itch and scratch her head also. If I don't cut her nails very short, she will tear the skin. Any advice as to why this is happening and anything to deter it?

Do you think she may have allergies? Or, perhaps she has dry eyes; something like artificial tears could help, but ask your pediatrician first. Could she have blocked or irritated tear ducts?

Also, maybe she's still tired, and the itching and rubbing are signals of this? All babies have different "tired signs"; rubbing the eyes is probably one of the most universal, after yawning.

Have you considered putting her in mittens when awake? Or possibly using long-sleeve kimono tops that are a size or two larger so the sleeves will be long enough to cover up her hands?

Good luck S.!

It sounds like allergies. Have you talked to the doctor? Do you notice any rashes on her like eczema?

Sounds to me like some type of allergy (with the eye rubbing). How long has it been happening? Do you have pets? My 7 month old does the head scratching thing. I cut his nails every 4 days, getting as short as possible without cutting his skin. He does it more when he is falling asleep/waking up, or agitated at something. It has gotten a little better over the past month or so. Also, he has little patches of eczema on his head, which I put his medicine on when he needs it and the weeks in between just baby bees mosterizer or aveeno baby to make sure that his skin is moisturized and therefore not as itchy! Good luck, I know it sucks when they have cuts all over their poor little heads.

The first thing that comes to mind is maybe an allergy to something?
