So my eyes have been super itchy with allergies lately. When they get like this I try really hard not to rub them but sometimes it just happens. Once I start rubbing it feels so good to scratch that I keep doing it. Then they start itching even more. I have allergy eye drops but they don't do anything for the skin around my eyes that itch. I don't think your supposed to use hydrocortisone around your eyes, so what can I use to help this? I am miserable.

What can I do next?

Don't know which eye drop medication you are using but my son who has terrible allergies used to use the over the counter stuff too and it didn't work. The doctor prescribed patonol eye drops and they did wonders. The drops are very expensive though. I think I paid something like $120 for a tiny bottle.

Take 1/4 dose of Benadryl. You DO NOT NEED a full dose. A super minimal dose will reduce the stress the skin in that area is feeling but will not effect the rest of your system. I buy Children's Benadryl liquid at Walmart. Their brand will do just as good. I would take 1/2 teaspoon and no more. If this works then you know that's the maximum dose you can get by with.|

Benaryl is a strong medication for extreme reactions to an allergen so it's not to be taken lightly, it is a strong medication.

If you take a full dose you will dry out, wheeze due to no moisture being in your throat and lungs, and won't have any mucus.

I also suggest you clean your face totally of all makeup, take a long hot steamy shower and wash your face again, use a clean towel when you get out to dry your face on, even one that has just been sitting there may have the same allergens on it that are in the air of your home. Then perhaps see how today goes and if not wearing any makeup or lotion or any hair products helps your skin not itch.

You can develop an allergy at any time. Even if you use the product every day. I have developed an allergy to something in conditioners. I feel like I am pouring acid on my scalp when I put it on.

Take your regular allergy meds, plus Tylenol.

I found out Tylenol helps with itchies when I had an awful sunburn. I realized that it really didn't matter what I put ON it...I had to treat it from the inside. Worked like a charm. Then, when I got allergies (WITH HIVES), and the itchies were awful, I took Tylenol with my Benadryl. It sure did help!

I hope it helps you too.

My daughter and I use Alaway (Ketotifen 0.025 equivalent to ketotifen fumarate 0.035%) from Bausch & Lomb, but CVS has a generic of the same ingredient that is cheaper. When allergies are bad, we also take Allegra (again actually the CVS equivalent). I would not put hydrocortisone around my eyes, but either just Vaseline (they sell little tubes of vaseline based cream you can actually put in your eyes for dry eyes that always end up around my eyes, so if you want a sterile cream that would work, it is also by Bausch & Lomb) or just close your eyes and put regular vaseline around your eyes (I would use a tube of vaseline so you do not keep touching the product with fingers like in a jar). Drugstores sell large tubes of vaseline and recently they started selling these 3-per-pack little tubes. The other things that soothes itching is an cold pack - get one of those flexible gel filled packs that are made for putting on your eyes, it really helps especially at night when you are going to be closing you eyes anyway. If you are not getting relief I would see an opthalmologist, you might have more than just an allergy. If they are scratchy and red then you may have "pink eye" = conjunctivitis.

I use naphcon drops in my eyes. Or the Refresh drops in the individual vials. Some of the other eyedrops have preservatives that can cause allergies.

It the itching is on the skin around your eyes,, sometimes a cold compress will help. Dry is better. You can try wrapping a sock around one of those Ace reusable cold packs that you find at the drug store near the bandages.

The problem with scratching is that your hands may have the allergen on them. Make sure you wash them often with hypoallergenic soap.

A year or two ago I had the same problem you are having and it turned out I'd developed an allergy to newsprint. I'd read the paper, the fumes would make my eyes itch, so I'd rub them which made them flare up worse because the newsprint was on my hands. When my doctor saw me, he guessed it was either newsprint, latex perhaps from kitchen gloves or some soap or detergent. Once all the newsprint was gone from my house, the rash went away.

I hope you can find the source of your allergies and eliminate the problem completely!

You can supplement to reduce or eliminate your allergy symptoms - it's more preventing the problem than dealing with the itch after it occurs. I used to be like you every spring and every fall, but I have not had any symptoms in 5 years. I had the itchy watery eyes and also the excessive sneezing from pollen, animals, grasses, etc. I had to leave the area when someone mowed their lawn in the neighborhood. My record is 33 sneezes in a row - my family counted. I was exhausted. You have no idea how long that takes!

Now I mow, weed, etc. I rarely sneeze, but even if I do on occasion, I don't get congested or swollen. You can do what I do - it won't help in a day or two but it will work over time.

My eye doctor told me not to use some of the drops as they were bothering me and he said they dilate your eyes. He told me to use Zaditor. It's over the counter and in seconds the itching even around the eyes stops. I used to use one that was so great and helped the outside and inside but it had a antibiotic in it and they won't fill those anymore because of that. Try the Zaditor. One of our granddaughters has severe allergies and it helped her eyes even. At least try it.
