JFF Has It Finally "Clicked"?

So, I am a huge Dave Ramsey fan! I have gone to one of his live events with my husband(loved it!) and listen to his show on the radio all the time. We are working on being debt free again(we were once, then had to move and sell our house for less then we paid for it- didn't' know about short sells then) so we have about 5,000 left on that loan and about 500 from medical bills from our last baby(that will be paid off this coming month! hooray!). But it finally hit me one day that I don't have to have a mortgage payment my whole life! I can be COMPLETELY DEBT FREE!!! including the house! Can you imagine that? Not having $1000(for us) of your paycheck go to the bank EVERY month?!?
This really excites me, but my husband hasn't quite gotten there yet. My goal is in 5 years to have the home paid off and I really think we can do it! I just got a part time job to help out with expenses and I would think that we will be making more in 5 years than we are now.
Am I just completely crazy about this? Because I have told some other people of my goal and they just look at me like I have escaped from somewhere and say, "yeah.... that sounds good" then change the subject.
So, besides asking if you think I am crazy for this idea- is there anything in your life that has suddenly "clicked" and you finally get it?
Thanks!
~C.

That's cause they're "normal" and now you're not.

Get ALL up in that mortgage's FACE!

We're debt free including the house. You can be too. Good luck!

Weeeeee'rrree debt frrreeeeee!

Yep, we are, and we did it using much of Dave's philosophy. I gotta tell you, it feels awesome. You are NOT crazy! You CAN do it!

This was my big "clicked" area. My husband got me on board and we paid off my student loans, cars and a few credit cards. Once you get it in your system, it becomes just a way of life. And it's a good life!

Good luck with your goal!

I think it's possible if you are committed to it.

We are a cash only family and the only debt we have is the house...paying what we pay now, it will be paid off in 7 years....I'm not in an all-fired rush to pay it off...I know some people think I'm crazy...but oh well....it's NOT their life...it's mine...

As long as your goal allows you to live - and you aren't spending every last penny on the mortgage - then that's great...if you go "too far" with the pay off - meaning that you don't leave yourself any "fun" money - then you might have a splurge...like a diet - when you don't give yourself a "junk day" or even a junk meal...does that make sense? make sure that while you are working on your goals you aren't soooo focused on it that you forget to have fun....

GOOD LUCK!!!

I don't think you're crazy! But people might look at you like you are because they can't believe your mortgage is almost paid off. I don't know how old you are, but I don't know anyone my age who is even close to paying off their mortgage (I'm 38). But I'm with you. We are currently in the process of refinancing to a 15 year, at 3.125%!!! Yahoo!!!! Can't wait to be rid of THAT payment!

It is great to not be a slave to the borrower, as Dave would say. A lot of people look at you that way because they don't understand how people can actually be committed like that, they think you have to be "rich" to do this. My husband and I have saved for many years, and do not have debt. If we want something we do put it on the card, and pay it off every month. But we can do this because we haven't been stupid with our money. I think that is great that you are doing this, congratulations on your hard work!!

C.,
You can do it! remember... Normal is broke! We did it. Following Dave's plan, we paid off the house about 3 years ago. It is a great feeling. With no payments comes peace... just like Dave says!
Best wishes to you.

I don't think you are crazy at all..I think you are very smart! My husband got married in February, up until now, we have been paying two mortgages as we both owned our own houses prior to getting married. I am very happy to say that my house is FINALLY selling. I have had to take a loan out from my parents to help with the 15k I need to come to the table with (yes, I said 15k...that was not a typo) LOL. Anyway, we are already trying to map our our financial goals and where we want/need to be. To finally have some financial stress of not paying for two homes is a relief, to say the least. Dave Ramsey will be doing part of a series at my church and I am so excited about it. I think it is called "weird about money" or something. I plan on going to this service with my husband to see if it is beneficial for us (as I am sure it will be). I have always wanted to goto Dave's classes. Anyway, just stay positive and start putting your goals into play and see how quickly your husband hops on the debt free train. Once you show him what can be done...he would be the crazy one for standing on the side lines not jumping in. Best of luck to you... I love your idea and hope that my husband and I can meet our debt free goals in the next few years. No house payment would be amazing!

As someone who doesn't have a mortgage and lives debt free, I cannot tell you what a blessing it is. My husband has been able to make work decisions based on what he wants rather than what he HAS to do, and it is very freeing. Would do it the same way if we had to do it over again.

don't worry about what others say or think. You just keep on striving to be the gazelle and let the goats keep running into the field waiting to get roped! :-)

Well of course you're crazy, because normal is to be in debt up to your eyeballs- or beyond. As Dave says, you know you're on the right track when friends think you're crazy- so you're doing great! You drank the kool-aid, just like we did a few yrs ago, and it feels wonderful! Just keep working on your husband in gentle and loving ways- it goes so much faster and smoother when you're BOTH all-in.

I think it's awesome! My husband and I got on the same pages with the finances about 6 months ago and it's awesome! We've calculated that we'd be debt free in 7 years---which will be 3 months before my 40th birthday! I'm so excited as we've paid off both cars now and one student loan! It's so freeing to not have those payments deducted from the checking account! You can do it too!!!! No mortgage, or "death pledge," for us!!!!

i dont think you are crazy I think you are goal orientated and jazzed up about something super exciting!!! Good for you for working so hard to get your family out of debt!!!!

nothing has really "clicked" for me in awhile...I think my toddler was a few months old before I was like, DING, i'm a mom...sounds silly because i obviously knew way before, but it was one of those things where you are sitting there feeding them and all of a sudden you are like, whoa, i'm a mom....lol

You're crazy for not trying to be normal, in the eyes of the world, yes:). But there are more of us who are crazy like that too!!!

That's awesome! Congratulations!!! We will be debt free, besides the house, by February and should have the house paid off in another 8-10 years. We just bought it 2.5 years ago on a 30yr note (before we knew about Dave), so I think this is pretty good!
