JFF - Who Drives the Car When You're Both in It?

I don't know what made me think of this but I'm just wondering. You and DH or SO are going somewhere in a car. Who drives? Does it depend upon where you're going, distance, circumstances, etc.? Just curious.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Interesting mix of answers. DH and I actually own the same car, just different colors so it doesn't matter which car we use. If we're together, I drive 99% of the time. He's more comfortable being the passenger (mostly because he has neck issues). I don't mind him driving (he's a good driver and not) but I know it's physically tiring for him. He doesn't criticize my driving (thank you DH) and I try to do the same when he drives. We had to compromise about which route to take as we usually disagreed. We finally decided that the driver decides the route and will ask for opinions only when wanted. We've been spared many a disagreement that way.

99% of the time I drive. I am a terrible passenger (control issues), and I get motion sick. I'd much rather be the driver. Hubby likes to multi-task... do crossword puzzles, take care of the music, etc.

ETA: When his 95-yr old grandparents see us get in the car, they are always shocked that I'm the one driving! Funny.

99% of the time it's hubby. because i LIKE him to drive me lol. LOVE it actually.

occasionally i will, if say, i have just gotten off work and pick him up, or some other reason - he's tired, had a few drinks, whatever.

but mostly it's him.

Me. DH learned how to drive a car late in life and gets dizzy when nervouse. My parents were different though. Dad always drove. It was just considered part of chivalry, which I think is very rare or dead by now.

Considering I am married to a back seat driver always right man. He drives because I refused to listen to him tell me to go faster, slow down, watch out, stop, go, turn here, wrong way, put your lights on, shut your lights off, then yell at other drivers. Using his imaginary brakes is the best! So he drives!

I drive. It's the control freak in me.

And the fact that my husband (the third worst driver in the world) learned how to drive from his parents (#1 and #2 worst drivers in the world). Simple things like, you know you're making a right turn in 2 blocks, so why wouldn't you just BE in the correct lane instead of having to veer over at the last minute? Or understanding that stop signs are the law, not a suggestion you can choose to ignore, EVEN if there are no other cars around. Stuff like that. His driving drives ME up the wall, so when we're together, I drive.

Him, every single time. He's a horrible backseat driver, and we agreed (VERY early in our marriage..) that he would just be the driver when we were together. haha. It wasn't worth the fights!

Me - I am the only one with a valid drivers license and the insurance only covers me. I drive all. the. time.
I wish we could pay off my husbands $23,000 judgement so we could get his license re-instated, but we can't afford to.
Can I just say, it is SO ANNOYING when we are driving along and he is pointing things out to me or telling me to look at something!
I CAN'T BECAUSE I'M DRIVING!

Depends on the trip and the car. DH usually drives if we're in the van and it's not a long trip. Long trips I drive some, too. If it's my car, I usually drive, but last night I was tired and I asked him to drive. If it's his car, he drives. I am not a good stick shift driver.

Well, my husband is tall and I am short- For us, he can't ride in the passenger seat because of our little ones in carseats behind the passenger seat. So he drives my car. Although sometimes I drive his car but usually he drives because of the carseats.

If we are going somewhere around town my husband always drives. Unless for some really odd reason he just doesn't feel like it and hands me the keys. When we go on road trips we trade off.

My husband did just buy a Tundra which at first I was too afraid to drive because its massive but now that we have had it a while if we are taking the truck instead of my car I want to drive, so I do :)

If we are going long distance, it's always him.

If we are running and errand or going out to dinner, I will sometimes drive. But I have a long commute everyday so I prefer to be the passenger.

He also tends to make me a little nuts with little things when I drive. "Go into that other lane, no, not this parking space, pull up, move back." So I have to remind him that I drive more every day than he does - shut up and let go of the control. But once I tell him to stop it, he does. He's just used to ordering around people at work all day!

Used to always be my husband but now it's me probably 75% of the time. Especially if it's at night because my eyesight is better than his.

Well, if we take MY car then I drive and if we take his then he does. We typically do not take his, I do not like his car - it's a sporty thing that is low to the ground (6'2 and I've had back surgary) and a stick shift (I don't do stick) so I am not very comfy in his car. Mostly we take my sedan and I drive, I am a bit of a control freak that way. I only sit in the passengar seat if I have been drinking or am that tired. Heck, when I go out with my mom or mil I drive their cars too!

My hubby didn't know how to drive when I met him (he lived in London adn Dublin, and had no money or need for a car). After teaching him to drive, I was happy to let him drive me around!

Sometimes I drive when we are both togehter, but usually I still like him to drive me around.

me - I HATE being a passenger when my husband is driving. He drives too slow, or too fast, or doesn't signal, or doesn't anticipate when we need to turn and, well, well, I am just a MUCH better driver (except for that 1 incident last winter when I hit his parked car in our driveway).

He only drives if I have had a c-section and have been restricted :-)

I nearly always let my husband drive. I already drive 60 miles round trip every weekday for work and I get so sick of it and have nearly zero patience for other drivers on the road. Even if we take my car, I hand him the keys. I like being driven around honestly, especially on long road trips, I prefer to read or sleep in the car, or just relax. I drive on occasion in town or help out on long trips, but I really prefer to not drive. He likes to most of the time unless he's really tired.

For us it depends on the car. My car is small, gas economical and has an automatic transmission. If we take my car, I drive. Hubby's car is a mini SUV, uses more gas and has a manual transmission. I don't know how to drive a stick, so, if we take his car he drives.

Am I the only grown woman on the planet who doesn't know how to drive a stick?
