Hi,
I know this may sound crazy but I was hired for a Caregiver position and worked two weekends. From 8:00 am on Sat. morning until 8 am Monday morning. That was Thanksgiving weekend and the weekend after. I found out after that I only get paid for 16 out of every 24 hours of work. Also since I said I would not work all weekend every weekend they have only called me to work for one day the first part of January which was on a Monday from 8:00 am until 8:00 am Tuesday. Now I am going Sat. to take a CPR and First Aid course at the office. But here is my question. I want to know if it's normal to work 24 hours and get paid for 16. They are also wanting me to take a CNA course which will cost as much as I made in the two weekends I worked. So my other question is this, would you take the CNA course in hopes to get more hours or would you just tell them your not taking it? This is a new company that just started up last February and they say they are trying to get more clients and more work for us. I just don't know what to think anymore. One of the ladies that was getting to work two days a week was cut back to one day a week right after Christmas. Another told me she is only working one day a month. I am looking for other work elsewhere. Thank you for all your help...

I think you are being exploited. If you work for 24 hours, you should be paid for them. Now, that said, it is not unusual to be paid for part of it at a different rate (on-call/stand-by) for example at night when everyone is asleep. But if you are required to be at your workplace for 24 hours you should ba paid for the entire time.
As for the CNA class, it will definitely help your career outlook if you plan on staying in the medical field. It is often a first step towards career advancement, too (for example if you are considering becoming a licensed nurse). If you take the class at an accredited school, you may qualify for financial aid.
Good luck!

If you were on the job for 24 hours, you should be paid for the 24 hours. As for the additional classes, you should be able to write them off on your 2010 taxes as a school/work expense.

Are you an employee of this company or are you a subcontractor? This can determine how you get paid. Yes, it's normal to work 24 hours and get paid for 16. It works 2 ways, usually at 2 different rates of pay or at a combined rate. Do you have an employment contact? What was established when you were hired?

I would definatly understand them wanting you to take a CNA course (varries from state to state, but is usually a program that lasts a year, requires both schooling and on site training). Do you want to be a CNA? Are you interested in a nursing career? If yes, then becoming a CNA would advance your career.

The reason for the decrease in hours may be the current economical situation, or it could be a sign that this company is not doing well.

Continue working for this company, but keep looking for work elsewhere.

Good luck

HI R..
I am currently expanding a business. If you are interested let me know. Stop working for someone else. I hate hearing employers taking advantage like this. Let me know if you want more info.

I process payroll for REM Hennepin, Inc. an adult foster care provider. We typically pay our employees for all of the hours they work, asleep or awake (sleep is paid at minimum wage, $7.25/hour). However, we do provide services called "respite care" that pay 16 hours for a 24 hours shift at a blended rate, combining sleep and awake hours. So you are not being exploited, but the managers probably didn't explain the different rates or the respite hours, so you should get more clarification. If you would like more hours and be paid a reasonable rate, my company is always looking for new employees. The hours and locations vary, but check us out at http://www.remminnesota.com/welcome.aspx We have offices and group homes across the state. If you are interested in Hennepin county specifically, you can call our regional office at ###-###-#### and ask to speak with someone in personnel.
