I have a 2 year old boy who I cannot keep dry though the night. he wakes up once and I change him. with or without the change he usually ends up wet in the morning. my other son never had to be changed and never wet himself. has anyone used a certain type of diaper which can hold the sleep time functions? I use a size larger then what he would usually need. any suggestions or thoughts? thanks, atm

What can I do next?

First you say you use a size larger than he would normally need, could it be too big and that is why it is leaking? If that is not the case, we went through this as well and I would put a Gerber plastic cover OVER the diaper that way, even if the diaper leaked, nothing including my child would get wet. These can be found at a baby store or even Target and are cheap.
Good luck!

Try limiting the fluids at night. When we started potty training my son, the director at his preschool said to cut off fluids two hours before bedtime & to not use a pull-up at night. I think it's a bit harsh for a two year old, so I push more fluids around dinner & limit the fluids one-two hours before bed. He still wears a pull-up, but most of the time it is dry when he wakes up :)

My son is 2 1/2 and we use the Pull-Ups Night Time and they do great. he is getting better as he gets older but some nights if he drinks water before bedtime he will wet at night, but the night time pull-ups hold a lot if need be. Good luck

I have the same problem with my 3.5 year old. He is totally potty trained but is a heavy sleeper and doesn't wake up to go to the bathroom. I have him in Good Nights size small and those seem to hold it all in. Regular diapers don't work. He is a big kid though. I am not sure what else to tell you. I would be interested to know if anyone has older kids like mine who wet themselves at night.

I was so glad to see your actual question - I thought it was going to be keeping them dry at night as part of potty-training, and I thought I was going to have to tell everyone ONE MORE TIME that my oldest and youngest were not potty-trained until they were very nearly three years old! It's been a long time since I dealt with this issue, so my advice may be antiquated, but I'll tell you what I used to do. For one thing, I used cloth diapers. At one point, though, when I was having this issue, I would use a disposable with a cloth as a liner. Twenty (well, close to twenty) years ago, they sold disposable diaper liners, also - I used these at one point, too. Here's another idea - my mom was ill a couple years ago, and when she came home from the hospital was using Depends (but not anymore, yeah!) and was having trouble waking up at night to go to the bathroom. I used "Poise" pads inside the Depends. I wonder about using something like that - or my girls use night-time pads during their periods. Either one of these things inside his diaper may absorb enough extra to let him go through the night without making a mess or needing to wake you to be changed . . .

Good luck!

The Huggies Overnights work pretty good. A lot has to do with how much milk he's using to fall asleep, and if he's getting up in the middle of the night for a bottle. Try to cut out the middle of the night feeding, if he still has one.

My 3 year old always leaked thru his diapers. We use "overnites" which help, but the life saver is a product I found at Babies r us. its called diaper doublers. It is just an absorbent insert that you slip in the daiper and they are not too expensive. we almost never wake up soaked anymore.

Hi A.,
"Huggies Overnights" are the only diapers I found to keep the bed/clothes dry overnight. They work great! I think it is pretty common to still urinate overnight until age 4 or more UNLESS you restrict water in the evening which I have chosen NOT to do. I do not worry about the wetting in the night at this point. My son just turned 4 and now wakes up dry 50% of the time and wet 50% of the time. It will decrease over time until they are dry all the time. Hope this helps!

We had the same problem too.

We use Huggies Overnite diapers. They also have diaper inserts, but I have never tried them.

Also, the larger diaper may be too big and cause leaking.

We bought a diaper insert at Babies R Us called a diaper doubler. They go in the diaper to double the amount it holds at night. They worked wonderfully while we needed them. They are really inexpensive too. Justa thought, it kept us from having to change linenes every morning or in the middle of the night.

Kristina G,
In response to your response, yes I do have a 7 1/2 year old who consistently wets at night. He was born premature and had apnea to a point we had to keep monitors on him, but the bottom line is he a happy, healthy normal 7 year old and he still wets because he is a very deep sleeper. I know part of the problem is having him drink too late, but my peditrician just said he will grow out of it when he's ready. I tried letting him wet the bed a couple times without pullups (per a pschologist, but that was a nightmare and he sleeps so deeply he does not wake up when he pees often. So now I'm patiently awaiting him not sleeping soooooooo deeply and considering investing in Huggies pull-ups. :) Best wishes and know you're not alone. C. G

I have a 2 year old with the same problem. I found some diapers called "Overnights" I don't see a brand name (Huggies, pampers etc) on them, but I found them at the grocery store (Vons or Stater Bros) and they are in a dark blue/purple package. They seem like they are more for training since they are the pull up type but they come in larger sizes (I have been using the 30-60lbs). My son is 38lbs and they have worked great! Hope this helps . . .

This is a tuff 1. 1 of my boys had a wetting problem as well. Just make sure you don't give him anything to drink at least an hour before he goes to bed and before he goes make sure he uses the bathroom. Does he use the toilet? If he's not potty trained yet, it's a little more difficult, but can be done. Have no fear, it will pass. Be patient and consistant.

Huggies Overnights are great. I had to start using them with my son when he was just 8 months old. Friends with older boys recommended them. If he drinks a bottle before bed, you may want to try to cut back the ounces too.

Try using incontinence pads. Just stick them into the diapers you already have. We use these for our daughter at night and she stays dry all night.
