Keeping Mittens/gloves on My Toddler.

I put my toddlers mittens on AFTER she gets outside and/or touches the snow - once she realizes how cold it is.

This may be a bit unorthodox but we had twin 18 month olds last winter and a 2 and a half year old so we'd spend the entire time outside putting mittens back on and listening to the crying due to their hands getting cold so my husband came up with this one...duct tape. Seriously, At first I thought he was nuts but then he proceeded to take all the kids out for an hour and I didn't hear a peep from outside, I was sold! Just wrap duct tape around the mittens a couple of times (boots as well if they tend to fall off) and just rip it off when its time to come outside. I kept a roll of duct tape at both my front and back doors. As we had so many little ones we didn't venture out to parks and such too often, just in our yard so were not subject to the speculation of others and our neighbors got a kick out of it as they can plainly see what a fiasco taking all of them out is. There's nothing unsafe about the practice that I was able to come up with, doesn't look pretty but neither does a kid bawling b.c he lost his mittens and his hands are freezing. I didn't really bother looking into anything else b.c it worked so well so haven't tried anything altho I have those mitts that have a long liner that go the elbow for my 7 yr old and I really like those.

Before this I had mittens that were designed to go with my son's snowsuit that were just sacks for his hands (no thumbs) and they snapped onto his snowsuit (world's best toddler snowsuit that a friend used to make but stopped making this year). They NEVER came off and they were so comfy he never wanted them off. You could easily sew something similar and stitch little snap tabs onto the sleeves of his jacket. Email if you want more specifics.

Try putting adult socks over his hands. That is what my mom did to me when I burned my hands when I was three to keep the bandages on and it worked really well from what she said.

We purchased L Bow mittens this year and they work amazing. the mittens go on and then there is a liner that goes over the coat all the way up to the elbow. Too hard for a kid to get that much mitten off!

I ordered a pair from One Step Ahead; but I do know that Fleet Farm sells them - and they are cheaper. I bought the next larger size from there being that we'll need them next year and if he grows much we may need them this year too. At Fleet Farm they are 12.99 - but when I bought a pair 4 days ago they were on sale for 9.99. A steal compared to ordering them out of a catalog.

I worked at a homedaycare a few years ago and when the kids refused to wear mittens or were stubborn we said Ok don't. About 2min. later they realized they had made a bad mistake and were begging for their mittens which I kept in my pocket or nearby. It usually only took the one time to let them make the decision and realize on their own how wonderful mittens are. Let it be their choice. When they start whining about being cold ask alot of questions ... "Wow do you think your hands hurt because your not wearing mittens?"

I put my 2 year old's mittens on before his coat so that the edge of the mittens are stuffed inside that coat. The cuff of his sleeves are tight enough that he can't get his mittens off.

As far as the clips/keepers go I know that Target sells the little clips that attach to the jacket and attach to the mitten for just a couple of bucks. What a sanity saver! They are in the clothing section for babies/toddlers, on the bottom of a stand that has hats and mittens on it. We just picked ours up the other day, and they work great!

Definately try the L-Bow mittens (and gloves). I would order then directly from their web-site because they are a little cheaper than from One Step Ahead and other web-sites. They are based out of Waconia, MN, so you will get them really quickly.

My son doesnt get to go outside if he chooses to either not wear them or he takes them off while outside, he goes in immediately if will not put them back on with one warning. Its to much of a risk not to wear the mittens so he must wear them. I find that the ones with the thumb are the best because he can still grab things.
As for clips, I haven't found anything, I was thinking of sewing my own into the coat and making a snap for them (dont know how to, but I am willing to learn). Make sure to always wear yours and your hat too, if he sees you wearing them, he'll want to do what you do.
